ASEAN’s Largest Renewable Energy, Environmental Technology and Energy Efficiency Exhibition www.renewableenergy-asia.com www.entechpollutec-asia.com www.energyefficiency-asia.com ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY - smart power for a cleaner tomorrow The market for environmental equipment in 2014 is now over 500 million USD with expansion being generated by population growth and industrialization. The major players are 40% government and 60% private. The environmental equipment market covers 3 major sectors: water and waste-water treatment equipment, solid-waste treatment equipment and air pollution control. Water treatment is about 50% of the market with solid waste treatment and air pollution control at 30% and 20%. Currently the industry relies on the expertise of foreign products and services. Local products meet general standards, but specialized environmental products must be imported. Accelerated privatization projects will present many long-term commercial opportunities for the sector. RENEWABLE ENERGY - the intelligent answer to growing power needs Renewable energy generation accounts for just 15% of Thailand’s total energy production (the rest comes from natural gas and coal). This has left Thailand vulnerable to energy pricing from international suppliers. The green energy economy model is based on renewable energy as a supplemental source of power while sustaining the environment. Thailand has high potential with renewable and alternative energy sources including wind, solar and hydro-electric power plus biofuel. Technologies for these sources are already well-established. In Thailand, the government is the sole buyer of electricity. Under its Alternative Energy Development Plan, renewable energy will constitute 20% of total energy needs by 2022. The government wants to make Thailand ASEAN ‘s hub for biofuel and renewable energy technology. Thailand was one of the first countries in Asia to encourage alternative energy investment. In 2008, the government introduced its Alternative Energy Development Plan (AEDP) the goal of which was for renewable resources to provide 25% of the country’s total energy needs by 2022. THE BOOMING MARKET IN THAILAND AND ASIA Thailand’s support policies for renewable energy have allowed small projects to flourish, attracting more investment and leading to faster growth in the sector. Thai energy focuses on identifying factors that can create new policies and highlight lessons for future development. Fossil fuel power plants are still the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. As a result rising concerns about pollution and limited energy reserves have increased the emphasis on renewable energy development. Southeast Asia, due to its abundant natural resources and favorable topography, has immense potential in terms of energy production from renewables. Currently RE technology includes geothermal, biomass and hydropower. Solar photo-voltaics and wind energy are classified under emerging technologies. Southeast Asia is now experiencing healthy economic growth and the increasing rate of urbanization portends higher energy consumption. Due to the inability of conventional coal powered plants to meet demand, renewable contracts are becoming more important. Regulations have been brought into effect on a country-wide basis to increase renewables with one of the key legislations being the Renewable Energy Act of 2008, which was recently passed in The Philippines. THAILAND - AN ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER • Wind energy market is expected to increase owing to new installations & locations with favorable wind potential. • Thailand has the largest installed capacity in Southeast Asia for solar PV. The country has set up a ‘Solar Energy Park’ to solar energy targeted to achieving 85 MW by 2011. • Thailand is the largest biomass market in the region with an installed capacity of 1761.29 MW in 2007. • The Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency is promoting small hydropower projects. WHY THAILAND IS ONE OF YOUR BEST ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTMENTS • The Kingdom was among the first countries in Asia to introduce incentive policies for the generation of electricity from renewable energy sources. This has led to rapid growth - particularly in solar. • Programs for small power producers created predictable conditions for renewable energy investors to sell electricity to the grid. •The Adder - a feed-in-premium - guarantees higher rates for renewable energy, making investments profitable. Thailand also regularly updates technical regulations, provides financing, and invests in research and training. • Civil society involvement has strengthened and improved renewable energy policies in Thailand. • The Thai government is now adapting its policies to take account of recent technological progress. It is considering a sophisticated feed-in tariff to better control costs, while continuing to offer a positive environment for renewable energy investments. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVESTMENT Thailand has instituted a 20-Year Energy Efficiency Development Plan (2011-2030) the target of which is to reduce energy usage by 25 per cent by 2030. Compared with 2005, this will be the equivalent of a 20% reduction in energy consumption. The areas with priority for energy conservation are the transportation and industrial sectors. The government also aims to reduce energy elasticity (the percentage in energy consumption needed to achieve a 1 per cent drop in national GDP) from an average of 0.98 over the past 20 years to 0.7 for the next 20 years. Today energy is central to everybody's quality of life and a crucial factor for economic growth and employment. Energy demand in Thailand has been increasing continuously and depends heavily on imports due to limited domestic sources. Energy efficiency (EE) plays an important role in strengthening energy security, decreasing household expenses and lowering production costs. It also helps reduce the trade deficit and increases competitiveness. The EE program will aid in mitigating pollution and greenhouse gases (GHG) which cause global warming and climate change. promote Why RE, EP and EE Asia is No.1 • ASEAN’s largest Renewable Energy, Environmental Technology and Energy Efficiency Exhibition • An international show featuring top companies from 30 countries • 6 National Pavilions from Germany, Singapore, Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea • Over 100 Seminars and Presentations from leading companies, academics and researchers NEW! Thailand’s 20-year Energy Efficiency Development Plan: EEDP (2011-2030) The goal of the EEDP is to reduce energy intensity - EI - 25% by 2030. Compared to 2010, this will be equivalent to a reduction of final energy consumption of 23.5% or 38,200 thousand tons of crude oil equivalents (ktoe).
