January 23, 2015 What’s Right with Our School... ★S/O to Gwen Weber for becoming a fantastic reader and for working SOOOOO hard in ELA. ★Winter II student athletes who are doing a great job balancing academics with athletics. ★S/O to Levi Nichols for being conscientious of his surroundings and straightening out chairs in the media center. ★The 26 students who make up our Advanced English 8th grade class. They did such a good job on their historical narratives. ★Michael Meadows for demonstrating great voice and word choice in his historical writing piece. ★Natalie Kutzli for being a great example to her peers by showing up early in the morning and doing whatever it takes. She is a dedicated student. ★The writing ability of Drew Atkins, who made the reader feel like he/she was in the plane throughout his historical narrative. ★A high-five to Zach Moore, Logan Rogers, and Samantha Jeluso for writing captivating Historical Fiction narratives. We have potential future authors in our midst here at RMS. ★S/O to Chad Kunnen for demonstrating that “effort is everything” and performing very well on a tough math test. ★Students like Jesse Koedoot and Joshua Plattenberg always bring positive energy to the hallway and the classroom. They are appreciated by their classmates and their teachers. ★S/O to the eighth grade students who battled through exams this week! ★Blake Greening for helping Mrs. Smith prepare to teach the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens during his lunch! ★S/O to Jericha Scharphorn for helping a classmate reorganize a binder in preparation for Spanish 1B. We love her generous spirit! ★Brayden Rotzell for always giving his full effort; he is an awesome student! ★Peyton Perrin, Tate Jennings, Andrew Showers, Brayden Rotzell, and Emma Costen for helping their classmates with Works Cited pages in ELA class! ★J o r d a n L o s c h a n d L i z K e e n e r f o r demonstrating to their peers that working hard pays off. ★Isaac Pitsch for lending a helping hand to a classmate by carrying her orchestra instrument. ★Student leaders like Aaron Lubbers for being a polite gentleman with good manners. Riley Street Reminder A WEEKLY NEWS NOTE FROM RILEY STREET MIDDLE SCHOOL Riley Street Middle School 2745 Riley Street, Hudsonvi!e, MI 49426 Phone: 616-896-1920 Planning for Enrollment Growth As some of you may be aware, in November Hudsonville Public Schools (the District) purchased Heritage Christian School’s current building. To consider future possible uses of this building, the District is conducting a series of focus groups with randomly selected parents and staff as well as meeting with both student and community groups. Additionally, the District will hold two Town Hall meetings open to the entire community. These Town Hall meetings will take place on February 4 and February 5 at 7:00 PM in our High School Auditorium. We are hopeful that many parents and community members will be able to hear the possibilities and participate in providing valued feedback. If possible, please join us for this important discussion. Riley Street Middle School Musical ~ The cast and crew lists have been posted for the Spring Musical: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr.! Thank you to everyone who auditioned and applied! Performances will be in April. If you would like more information, please contact Mrs. Maurice at smauric@hpseagles.net. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr. Fundraising Opportunities ~ In order to run a successful musical program, we must partake in some necessary fundraising activities. Individuals who donate $50 or more will receive 2 preferred seats to one of the performances on either April 24 or 25. Donations can be made in the office anytime between now and April 17. Divers Needed ~ The boys middle school swimming and diving team is looking for a few more 7th or 8th grade boys to dive. For more information contact coach Zuidema at rzuidema@hpseagles.net Clear Glass Jars with Lids ~ We are looking for small clear, glass jars, with lids (baby food jars, pickle jars . . . ), for an upcoming craft project. Please label them CRAFTS and drop them off in the office. 6th Grade Intramural Sports ~ Sixth grade students are encouraged to stay after school until 4:00pm on the following dates: • • • Thursday, February 5 - 6th grade boys - wiffle ball Tuesday, February 17 - 6th grade girls - volleyball Tuesday, February 24 - 6th grade boys & girls open gym Sixth grade students, who want to participate, should report directly to the gym at the conclusion of their 6th hour class on these days. It is recommended that students bring gym clothes to change into on these days. Students will need to arrange for a ride to pick them up at 4:00pm. Contact Mr. Ross for more details. Attention Ski and Snowboard Club Members ~ Our FINAL Ski and Snowboard Club outing is scheduled for: •Monday, 2/9 - Bus leaves High School at 4pm, returns at 10pm Make sure you sign the Bus Sign-Up sheet in the office at lunch the day of the trip. Riley Band Notes ~ Just some friendly reminders to band students and parents! • The pre-festival concert for the seventh and eighth grade bands will be held on Thursday, February 12. Complete concert information will be coming home next week. • The sub sale has finished as orders were due by January 22. If you sold subs please make sure you pick them up next Wednesday, January 28, between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. at the High School band room. Sign up forms will be available next week. The festival will take place at North Pointe Christian School on Saturday, April 18. Participation is optional. • Jazz band is beginning! Any 7th or 8th grade student that would like to play should get an interest form from Mr. Good, fill it out, and turn it in no later than Wednesday, January 28. Once initial interest is gauged, more complete plans for rehearsals and performances will be made. As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail! Mr. Good Hudsonville Community Members, In 2011, you overwhelmingly approved a school bond to build a new compe>>on pool and renovate our current pool/fitness facili>es. Renova>on of our main high school campus will result in the following list of enhancements to the current pool and adjacent fitness areas: new family changing areas, new locker rooms, a new cardio fitness room, and an updated weight room. Construc>on and demoli>on of our current pool/fitness facili>es will begin Friday, April 3, 2015. The >meline for comple>on of our new compe>>ve swimming facility and renova>ons of our old compe>>ve space will be in the fall of 2015. Demoli>on and construc>on will result in the temporary closure of the locker rooms with limited access to the pool. Community morning and weekend events will be canceled. Our A.M. lap, Saturday open swim, and morning community basketball will be canceled un>l the comple>on of the locker room area. As a result of the spring and summer construc>on, we will postpone our swimming lesson programming for the summer of 2015. Limited summer compe>>ve programming will s>ll remain while the pool area is being renovated. Hudsonville Community Educa>on will offer two sec>ons of lessons in the winter and early spring to offset a reduc>on in other program offerings. FREE FOOD DISTRIBUTION ~ Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM. Hudsonville Congregational. United Church of Christ and Sunrise Ministries are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to provide free food to those in need. The distribution will take place at Hudsonville Congregational United Church of Christ, 4950 32nd Ave., Hudsonville. There will be a large assortment of food, consisting of fresh seasonal produce and other quality grocery. Mobile Food Truck and FREE Pancake Breakfast ~ Will be available at Holy Cross Lutheran Church located at 1481 Baldwin in Jenison on January 24, 2015 10:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. A box or laundry basket would be helpful for taking your food home. This food truck is open to anyone in the community who would be blessed by this food. Wyldlife Club ~ Riley Street Wyldlife is a ministry focusing specifically on the students that go to Riley Street Middle School. We will be having our next Wyldlife Club on Thursday, January 29 from 7-8pm at Searchlight Ministries located at 4020 22nd, in Jamestown. At Wyldlife Club you will meet new friends, play games, and get a chance to hear a message from one of the leaders. No money is needed, just come ready for an awesome night hanging out with friends.
