MASS INTENTIONS ST. CATHARINE CHURCH Faith to Move Mountains A Campaign for the Diocese of Trenton MONDAY, January 19 8:00 AM Marie Wingard 12:00 PM (Chapel) William M. King, Jr. TUESDAY, January 20 8:00 AM Marie Wingard 12:00 PM (Chapel) Marie Mignelli Throughout 134 years as the growing Church of the Diocese of Trenton we have worked hard to fulfill our mission to make disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Numbering 800,000 strong in 2014, we Catholics have come this far by faith. The challenges before us appear formidable, indeed mountain-like, but the faithful of our Diocese have always responded to the challenge of the Gospel through their generosity in many ways. They have always believed that faith is greater than the mountain. WEDNESDAY, January 21 8:00 AM (Chapel) Fran McCarthy Marie Wingard Jack Naughton Joseph Heinzmann Anthony N. Margadonna John Ryan 12:00 PM (Chapel) Peggy Murphy THURSDAY, January 22 8:00 AM Marie Wingard 12:00 PM (Chapel) Eileen Venables Fiscally we have been prudent with wise management of our resources. Proactively, as we seek to nurture new seeds of faith in our church through vital and dynamic programs and services, we must secure additional resources that will work for us in supporting our efforts. FRIDAY, January 23 6:45 AM David Oster, Sr. 8:00 AM Rachel Fields Anna Tinh Thi Nguyen Marie Wingard Richard Hatem Joseph Bich Van Nguyen Caddy Daniels 12:00 PM (Chapel) Gayle Britt Secure endowments have long been mainstays of wealth for universities and hospitals, generating perpetual restricted income, funding specific programs and services. Like the tiniest mustard seed, which grows into the largest of plants, diocesan restricted endowments will nurture a multitude of lives through specific ministries that foster strong faith by strengthening our parishes and schools,; forming and supporting our seminarians and clergy, growing our lay formational and educational programs and broadening our social services. Although the goal is ambitious, we remain confident that it can be achieved. Jesus said “if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to the mountain, ‘move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.” Please pray for the deceased: Theresa Matuch Gorecki, James Levers, Sr., Joan Repetti, Petrina Perretti, Frank B. At that time, in clinical settings the condition was known as MBD (Minimal Brain Dysfunction). Before a child was prescribed medication, it was only after an extensive evaluation that included standardized testing and observation of the child in the formal school setting and in the less structured home setting. In the cases where medication was clearly indicated, frequently, it was a very hard sell to convince parents that their child should take Ritalin. When I retired from School Psychology, 25 years later, the shift in attitudes on ADHD and medication was by far one of the most profound changes in school psychology practice. It was not unusual for parents to arrive at school with a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD from their family doctor after a brief and perfunctory interview. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed now that 15% of high school students have been diagnosed with the disorder, although it is estimated that approximately 5% truly have the disorder, and the number of children taking medication for it had soared from 600,000 in 1990 to over 3.5 million. Not surprisingly, now newer medications such as Strattera, Adderall and Concerta were flooding the market. A new and upsetting aspect that we were seeing was the emergence of parents who saw the medication as giving their child an advantage over their peers when it came to standardized testing and SAT scores, that gave them a small boost in competitiveness in Math and Reading comprehension, to obtain entrance to desired colleges. And with the diagnosis, frequently came requests, and often, demands for modifications in test taking that provided another advantage. The role of the psychologist now changed from convincing parents about the efficacy of appropriately prescribed medication, to battling with parents to prevent their children being put on a path that could, and often did, lead to addiction during the teen years and young adulthood, and in some cases to psychosis, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations and anxiety. 2 513 St. Catharine – St. Margaret Parish Family And behind the change was the incontrovertible fact that the drug companies were paying doctors to deliver positive messages about the efficacy of their drugs and to advocate on behalf of ADHD stimulants. Between 2007 and 2012 alone, the number of prescriptions for ADHD drugs for adults between 2039 nearly tripled. Almost forgotten is the truth that even in the case of children who are correctly diagnosed, there are alternative ways of dealing with the condition, such as behavioral counseling, social skills training, and nowadays what psychologists call “mindfulness”, and that many of us in a Catholic environment would label “prayerfulness and meditation”. Interestingly, I have seen over the years that some children who have ADHD seem to thrive successfully in the more structured and “mindful” environment of a Catholic School. Here at St. Catharine School, the students are reminded, and given time, to pray frequently during the day, and to be quiet and reflective and prayerful throughout the day. Not surprisingly, in this structured setting, where expectations are clear and explicit, and where prayer and reflection are fostered, ADD and ADHD students as well as students in general, thrive and are more successful academically and socially. Their role is to help these organizations/ministries and everyone else in the parish, to keep in mind, and to work towards implementing the vision and goal of the parish and of the church. Its role is to guide the parish community in coming to understand and live out its pastoral mission. The council will begin by “visioning” – reflecting and clarifying what is our mission here at St Catharine’s. It is not a coordinating committee. St Catharine School will be represented by an 8th Grade and a Kindergarten student at all the weekend Masses on the weekend of Jan 24-25 at St. Catharine and St. Margaret Churches. Catholic Schools Week is celebrated nationally and is a joint project of the National Catholic Educational Association and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Come celebrate with us! It is not concerned with day to day administrative operations that are the responsibility of the pastor, the parochial vicar, the deacons, the school principal, the RCIA Director, the lay ministers and parish staff. It is distinct from the financial committee. The members of the pastoral council were called forth from the parish at large. The ministry of the pastoral council is to be attentive to the total mission of the parish. 1. “The first thing that the council must do is to pray that with the grace of God they may discern the voice of the Holy Spirit and try to be one with Christ to acknowledge his presence in their midst 2. The second need of a parish is conversion to a sense of community 3. The third need of a parish is for growth, maturity, the need to change, to accept the importance of change. 4. The fourth need is for planning, i.e., statements of its mission, vision, goal setting, objectives” (Cited in The Code of Canon Law: Text and Commentary from F. RODIMER, “Are Parish Councils on the Right Track?”) 4 513 St. Catharine – St. Margaret Parish Family Liturgical Ministry Schedule for St. Margaret Church Saturday, January 24th & Sunday, January 25th Celebrant SAT. 4:30PM Fr. These groups are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men through prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences. The group meetings are not meant to convince anyone that the priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in discovering if the priesthood is your true vocation and build your relationship with Christ along the way. If you are a faithful, single, Roman Catholic man, between the ages of 18 and 40, and are asking yourself whether God is calling you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to attend this month's discernment meeting on January 25th, from 4pm to 6pm at Saint Joseph Parish, 685 Hooper Avenue in Toms River, New Jersey. Join Rev. Scott Schaffer, as he shares his experiences of the priesthood, followed by prayer and concluding with a great meal and conversation. Some Catholic Humor “I have some good news and some bad news” said the pastor of the parish. The good news is that we have enough money to cover the monthly bills. The bad news is; it’s still in your pockets.” The priest announced that next week he was going to preach on the 17 th Chapter of St Mark. It was a special message and he wanted everyone to read the chapter before next Sunday. The following Sunday, he asked how many in the congregation had read the Chapter. Everyone raised their hands. “Just as I thought” said the priest “My message today is about honesty. There are only 16 chapters in St Mark’s Gospel What the world really needs is more love and less paperwork!.” Pearl Bailey SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION St. Catharine Chapel Saturday 3:30 – 4:30 PM St. Margaret Church Saturday 3:00 - 4:00 PM PARISH PROGRAMS RECTORY 732-449-5765 Receptionist Ext 100 Administration Ext 106 Adult Education Ext 102 Baptisms Ext 102 Bookkeeping Ext 107 Buildings & Grounds Ext 104 Bulletin Ext 110 Envelopes, Registration Ext 109 Funerals Ext 102/101 Music Office Ext 103 Operator Ext 0 Pastoral Care Ext 124 Publicity Ext 169 Receptionist Ext 100 Scheduling Ext 173 Weddings Ext 166 Youth Ministry Ext 125 Tax Letters Ext 178 Remember St. Catharine’s in Your Will Have the following statement included in your will: “I leave to the St Catharine School/Parish , Spring Lake, NJ, the sum of $___________or_______ percent of the residue of my estate, whichever is greater, for its religious, educational and charitable works”.
