Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
St. Mary Parish, Waltham
February 1, 2015
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
Even in Madrid I heard about the blizzard in Waltham!
I pray that you are all safe and able to travel on the roads.
Sometimes a “snow day” off from our regular routines
reminds us to slow down; to be quiet; to listen; to savor each
day as a gift from the Lord.
- Father Michael

ST. VINCENT de PAUL
In the Gospel today we read that because Jesus spoke with
authority his reputation spread throughout the surrounding
region of Galilee. As his disciples, we can also speak with
authority when we put our faith into actions by helping the
poor and suffering.
Over the past three months, through your gifts, the Society
of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring the light of Jesus
into the dark places of the poor, expending over $43,000 in
assistance to 367 families by providing food, gifts, gift
cards, new beds, and help with utility and rent bills. If you
have not responded to our annual appeal, please consider
making a meaningful donation this week. Envelopes are at
the Church doors. Thank you!
Christ, healer of hearts, teach us compassion for others.
Christ, maker of peace, help us bring peace to all people.
Christ, the light of life, show us the path of life. Amen.

“The love that brings new life into the world”
– Rabbi Sacks on the institution of marriage
continued from last week
The fifth development shaped the entire structure of Jewish experience. In ancient Israel an originally secular
form of agreement, called a covenant, was taken and transformed into a new way of thinking about the
relationship between God and humanity, in the case of Noah, and between God and a people in the case of
Abraham and later the Israelites at Mount Sinai. A covenant is like a marriage. It is a mutual pledge of
loyalty and trust between two or more people, each respecting the dignity and integrity of the other, to work
together to achieve together what neither can achieve alone. And there is one thing even God cannot achieve
alone, which is to live within the human heart. That needs us.
So the Hebrew word emunah, wrongly translated as faith, really means faithfulness, fidelity, loyalty,
steadfastness, not walking away even when the going gets tough, trusting the other and honouring the other’s
trust in us. What covenant did, and we see this in almost all the prophets, was to understand the relationship
between us and God in terms of the relationship between bride and groom, wife and husband. Love thus
became not only the basis of morality but also of theology. In Judaism faith is a marriage. Rarely was this
more beautifully stated than by Hosea when he said in the name of God:
I will betroth you to me forever;
I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, love and compassion.
I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will know the Lord.
Jewish men say those words every weekday morning as we wind the strap of our tefillin around our finger
like a wedding ring. Each morning we renew our marriage with God.
This led to a sixth and quite subtle idea that truth, beauty, goodness, and life itself, do not exist in any one
person or entity but in the “between,” what Martin Buber called Das Zwischenmenschliche, the
interpersonal, the counterpoint of speaking and listening, giving and receiving. Throughout the Hebrew Bible
and the rabbinic literature, the vehicle of truth is conversation. In revelation God speaks and asks us to listen.
In prayer we speak and ask God to listen. There is never only one voice. In the Bible the prophets argue with
God. In the Talmud rabbis argue with one another. In fact I sometimes think the reason God chose the Jewish
people was because He loves a good argument. Judaism is a conversation scored for many voices, never
more passionately than in the Song of Songs, a duet between a woman and a man, the beloved and her lover,
that Rabbi Akiva called the holy of holies of religious literature.
The prophet Malachi calls the male priest the guardian of the law of truth. The book of Proverbs says of the
woman of worth that “the law of lovingkindness is on her tongue.” It is that conversation between male and
female voices, between truth and love, justice and mercy, law and forgiveness, that frames the spiritual life.
In biblical times each Jew had to give a half shekel to the Temple to remind us that we are only half. There
are some cultures that teach that we are nothing. There are others that teach that we are everything. The
Jewish view is that we are half and we need to open ourselves to another if we are to become whole.

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK
We encourage everyone to continue reading the Acts of the
Apostles this week …
ACTS OF THE APOSTLES – CHAPTER 19 PART 4
The Riot of the Silversmiths. About that time a serious
disturbance broke out concerning the Way. There was a
silversmith named Demetrius who made miniature silver
shrines of Artemis and provided no little work for the
craftsmen. He called a meeting of these and other workers in
related crafts and said, “Men, you know well that our
prosperity derives from this work. As you can now see and
hear, not only in Ephesus but throughout most of the
province of Asia this Paul has persuaded and misled a great
number of people by saying that gods made by hands are not
gods at all. The danger grows, not only that our business will
be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess
Artemis will be of no account, and that she whom the whole
province of Asia and all the world worship will be stripped
of her magnificence.”

with an orientation and introduction by Fr. Michael Gaitley,
MIC (on DVD) followed by small group sharing. During the

of Jesus: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat Based on the Spiritual
Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola by Fr. Gaitley and

Q & A – LITURGY & SACRAMENTS
We continue with our “Question & Answer” series about
Liturgy and the Sacraments. The text is taken from the
Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
• For what reason are the sacraments necessary for
salvation?
For believers in Christ the sacraments, even if they are not
all given to each of the faithful, are necessary for salvation
because they confer sacramental grace, forgiveness of sins,
adoption as children of God, conformation to Christ the Lord
and membership in the Church. The Holy Spirit heals and
transforms those who receive the sacraments.
MASS IN LATIN CANCELLED ON FEBRUARY 14
The Mass in Latin (Extraordinary Form) at Saint Charles
Borromeo will be cancelled on February 14 at 6:00 p.m.
This mass will resume the following Saturday, February 21.
TREASURES OF THE CHURCH - FEBRUARY 27
St. Mary Parish presents a teaching and exposition of Sacred
Relics on Friday February 27 at 7:00 p.m. Father Carlos
Martins of the Companions of the Cross will be here with his
very special ministry to teach about these holy objects. He
will bring with him over 150 relics, some as old as 2000
years. Among the treasures will be relics of St. Maria
Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the “Little Flower"), St.
Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas
Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska. In addition, there will
also be present a portion of the veil of Our Lady, as well as
one of the largest remaining pieces of the True Cross in the
world. Those in attendance will be able to examine and
venerate each relic. In the Church’s history many miracles
and healings have been worked in the presence of relics, and
many have been healed through this ministry. Please do not
miss this opportunity. You are encouraged to bring your
articles of devotion (such as rosaries, holy cards, etc.) and
pictures of ill friends/family members which you will be
able to touch to the reliquaries as a means of intercession.
For more information visit www.treasuresofthechurch.com.
40 DAYS FOR LIFE: FEBRUARY 18 – MARCH 29
You are invited to join other Christians for 40 days of prayer
and fasting for an end to abortion. You are also invited to
stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil in the public
right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood at 1055
Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, beginning February 18 at
3:00 p.m. In addition, during these 40 days, candlelight
vigils will take place on Friday nights at 7:00 p.m. (English),
and on Saturday nights at 6:00 p.m. (Spanish). A concluding
prayer service will take place on Sunday, March 29 at 3:00
p.m. Help spread the word about this important community
outreach. If you’d like more information or would like to
volunteer to help, please contact Rita Russo at 781-7624391.
