Rev. Robert A. O’Leary passed away on January 18, 2015. He was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest on May 30, 1953 at St. Patrick’s Pro Cathedral. He attended Seton Hall University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Theology and then attended Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington. He was assigned to the Newark Diocese then after retiring he was performing services with St. Luke’s R.C. Church and St Justin’s R.C. Church. He will be missed by a lot of people. Keep in your prayers Rev. Robert A. O’Leary along with his family. Brother Mike Russo has resigned from the elected position of Treasurer. We will need someone to fill this position the remainder of his term by election. The Nominating Committee met and came up with the name of Jim Castrovilly for the position. There will be an election on this at the next meeting, so plan to attend. The Super 50/50 Raffle will be drawn on February 1st. I would like to thank PGK Dick Rieger and all the brothers that volunteered at the churches selling the tickets at every mass. Good luck to all that purchased tickets. On January 18th the Knights Softball Team ran a party for NFC / AFC Championship Games. There was great food and drinks for all the fellow brothers and guests that came to watch the games. I would like to thank all the Brothers from the Softball Team for running another great event. I would like to thank Brother Nick Crosta for volunteering by putting out something to eat every Sunday for the NFL Games. We had some nice crowds and I hope Nick will continue to do this next year. If there are any brothers that want to step up and help just contact me. The Lent Dinners are starting on February 20th at the Council which is run by the Ladies Auxiliary. Show your support by attending. They do an outstanding job every Friday of Lent. GRAND KNIGHT’’S FEBRUARY 2015 MESSAGE CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 Knights of Columbus Newsletter 2 Dear Brothers and Ladies, By the time you are reading this Super Bowl XLIX will be history. Hopefully there are a lot of winners among you reading this today. For the two weeks previous to the big day, I have to admit, I was (and still) not a big fan. It doesn’t have to do with how well the footballs were inflated or not. It’s just the amount of money, time and energy expended for this one game. Think of how much discussion centered around “Deflate-gate.” I guess my concern is just about what is important to us. Maybe with the loss of my brother and my mother in the past three months, I have become more aware of just how short this life is and how are we living it. A few nights ago, I was talking with a group of young people. I asked them about our Holy Father, Pope Francis and if they had heard anything about the Mass he offered in the Philippines a few days previous. They were surprised to hear that over 6 million people attended the Mass – the most people ever gathered in the history of the world for a single event. Yes, it was the Pope that came to the Philippines, but there had been typhoons and horrible weather conditions—and still they came. They came in faith to see our Church’s leader on earth. But it is the faith that draws us near. The Eucharist that gives us strength and the Gospel that gives us hope. I encourage us all this year to ask ourselves what is really important in our lives. As Knights, how are we living our faith? Are we attending Mass and frequenting the Sacrament of Reconciliation and receiving the Holy Eucharist? Brothers and sisters, let’s keep our eyes on the Lord in all we say and do. God bless you all, Father Scott Shaffer Parish Mission at St. Joseph’s – February 22-24 “The Meal, The Man and The Mission” Ladies Auxiliary Annual Scholarship The Ladies Auxiliary is accepting applications for their annual $500 scholarship to a daughter or granddaughter of a member of Council #4969 or its Ladies Auxiliary. Well, you can count on having a great time by joining us at the Council on Saturday night, February 21, starting at 6:30 p.m. for a “Blast from the Past”. This is an event to benefit the God’s Special People program, so you would also be doing a lot of good for the groups that we donate to every year. The event features the D-Cees who are led by Brother Knight Dan Conti. His group performs hits from the 50’s, 60’s, and you name it. A catered Italian dinner is included in the donation cost of $15.00 per person. Tickets are available at the Council bar, or by calling me directly (732-341-7076). Knight of the Month: Brother Dick Rieger, PGK I have selected Brother Dick Rieger, PGK. He stepped up and took the lead on the Christmas Food Basket Program. This in itself is no small task. It takes months to coordinate all the different details from time-tables to getting volunteers to make this program run smooth. He also runs the council “The Super 50/50” which is drawn every year at the half time of the Super bowl. Great job and well deserved. Family of the Month: Nicole and Brother Ken Marrone, PGK I have selected Nicole and Ken, they stepped up and volunteered to run the Council’s Children Christmas Party which they did an outstanding job. This is a big undertaking from coordinating the special guest of honor and making sure that all the children receive a gift. Another job well done. Vivat Jesus Grand Knight Mark A. Taylor FROM THE SPIRITUAL ADVISER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Peace and Love be with you all. It is now two days after THE MARCH FOR LIFE in Washington DC. We had 52 brave souls on the bus and as we neared Baltimore, the sun broke out and we had a day in Washington that was in the mid forties, one of the mildest in a number of years. We prayed, we marched, we visited The House and enjoyed a meeting with Reps. Chris Smith, Scott Garrett and newly elected, Tom McArthur, all very much Pro Life. We had students from St. Joseph Grade School (a first), Student Athletes (Cathletes) from Donovan Catholic, a group from our St. Joseph Youth Group, and families with their children, and some of us that are not as young. We had folks signed up from the Parishes of St. Joseph, St. Justin, St. Luke, St. Max and St. Barnabas. Thank you all.We had a talk from Dan Duddy, Head Football Coach from Donovan Catholic about Catholic Athletes for Jesus Christ. This is a organization started by Ray Mc Kenna (no relation), who has worked with Major League Baseball to have a Catholic Chaplain in every stadium in MLB so that the players may have the benefit of Mass and The Eucharist. This has been accomplished, and now The NFL has gotten on board 75%, but soon will be 100%. Now this program has spread to 92 Chapters in our high schools across the nation, including the Trenton Diocese of which is Dan is Chairman of the high school Chapters, speaking in many places throughout the country. Way to go Dan, God bless your efforts. We gave a commercial for the KofC and the generosity in supplying the bus, and we offered prayers for our Council & members…hope you felt them. Thank you, thank you, thank you to our Council, the best in New Jersey. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7 Knights of Columbus Newsletter 6 'Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. As you will remember, the same Dan Duddy lost his son Francis in a car accident last year with his best friend, Conner Hanafin, who was driving and also seriously hurt. As a Deacon for almost 25 years, I have never seen a wake as large as than the one in St. Joseph Church for Francis. From day one, in even their grief, the Duddy family forgave, asked for prayers for, and supported the Hanafin family and Connor. On the day after the March, Connor was being sentenced to serve time in his part of this tragedy. The Duddys were there and Dan and Dan Junior stood before the court and asked for forgiveness and clemency for Connor, vowing to stand behind him. A little later, I received a text message from Dan asking for prayers for Connor.I cannot think of a greater lesson we can learn about compassion and forgiveness, in spite of personal loss. I ask once again for our prayers to be with the Duddy family, remembering Francis, and for Connor and the Hanifin family. May God’s Mercy , Strength and Compassion be with you. Brothers and Sisters, pray for one another, yourselves and for me as I pray for you. Amen! John Budenas Chairman John Budenas submitted an article to the Columbia magazine and received this reply. We may not have made the magazine, but apparently it will be on the website ——————————————————————————————————————————————— Dear John: Thanks for your submission. We will include your report AND/OR photo in the next online posting of Knights in Action at www.kofc.org/knightsinaction on Feb. 1, 2015. Your report will appear online only and will be viewable on the website for approximately one month, after which time it will be archived. Due to the volume of reports that we receive and the limited number of pages available in the magazine, the Columbia editorial staff has chosen to make certain reports available exclusively on the Internet. The Knights of Columbus website has become an invaluable tool for councils throughout the world, as well as Christians who may not belong to the Order. In recent months, Supreme Council staff members have also made great strides to expand the Order’s outreach through social media outlets like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Your submission helps the Order in its continuing task of building a strong Internet presence. We look forward to receiving additional reports of your council’s charitable activities in the future, which we will consider for inclusion in both the print and electronic editions of “Knights in Action.” Thanks again.
