Sacrament of Baptism for Infants: Baptisms are scheduled
after meeting with a priest. Parents or guardians and sponsors
are required to attend a baptism class prior to the baptism.
Baptisms are at 11:00 a.m. in English on the 3rd Saturday of
the month and in Spanish on the 2nd Saturday.
Sacrament of Matrimony: Weddings are scheduled by
meeting with a priest at least six months prior to the wedding.
Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick: Call the Parish Office. A
minister is also available for pastoral visits and to bring Holy
Communion to our parish sick and homebound.
Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): Adults seeking to
complete initiation or inquiring about becoming a Catholic may
call the Parish Office for more information.

From the Pastor’s Desk...
On this First Sunday of Lent, we recall the
twofold nature of this season.
For
Catechumens, designated this week as The
Elect, Lent is a time of final preparation for the
Sacrament of Baptism. For those of us already baptized, it is
a time of repentance and renewal through the practices of
prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. For all of us, baptized and
unbaptized alike, Lent is about our baptismal covenant with
God–––the promises that we have made and will make,
rejecting Satan and professing our belief in God.
Year B’s Old Testament readings chart God’s unfolding
invitation to ever-deepening covenant love. Offered through
Noah, this first covenant embraces God’s whole creation, the
fragile earth and all living creatures, in all our rich diversity.
Strikingly, this covenant prescribes no sacred rites, no
revealed scriptures.
Instead, its sacramental sign is
immediately accessible, easily read even by those with little or
no religious inclination: I set my bow in the clouds. God’s
rainbow pledges that the cosmic order’s recurrent rhythms,
seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day
and night will continue in perpetuity, despite our sins, for all
creatures’ well-being.
Year B’s second reading ties Old Testament and Gospel:
Noah’s family, saved through water, prefigured baptism, which
saves you now. After Jesus’ Baptism and missioning as God’s
Beloved Son, the Spirit compelled Jesus into the desert, there
to be tempted by Satan...among wild beasts.
Each Lent, therefore, begins with the Gospel of Jesus’
temptation, the perfect episode with which to begin our Lenten
journey toward Baptism or Baptism Renewal. For, as Baptism
did not lead Jesus to peaceful contemplation but to spiritual
testing and self-sacrificing ministry, so we should not be
surprised to find ourselves among wild beasts in a world often
indifferent, sometimes hostile.
But even here ministering
angels are visible to faith-filled eyes, and Lent’s reconciliation
kindles within and among us blessed reminders of creation’s
peaceable kingdom past and its fulfillment yet to come.

Scholarship from Catholic Daughters
The Court St. Pius X #1866 of the Catholic Daughters of
the Americas is pleased to announce their annual $500
scholarship competition for students in 8th grade in public or
private schools. This year’s essays, titled “Just Be a Blessing”,
should discuss the virtues and qualities needed during high
school to be a blessing to others. Application forms must be
submitted with essays. To receive an application or request

Applications and essays must be postmarked by April 15,
2015 and sent to CDA Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box

will be submitted to the National Catholic Daughters of the

Catherine Neumayr, the principal of Holy Rosary Academy
(HRA), will be speaking at the end of this weekend’s Sunday

Lenten Scripture Study
Join us on Mondays at 7:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Center for
our Lenten Scripture Study of the book of Exodus. During this
10 week study, we will see how Exodus tells the salvation
story of God’s chosen people, from bondage and death to
freedom and life, a story which is ancient and yet always new.

Stations of the Cross and Soup Suppers
On Fridays during Lent, the Stations of the Cross are said at
11:15 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Prior to the evening Stations, soup

Pope Saint John Paul II Party

anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Anchorage

Centennial Celebration in February
In February we commemorate the papal visit of 1981 –
when Pope St. John Paul II walked and prayed amongst us. At
7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 26, the 34th anniversary of
his visit, we will celebrate and remember this special visit. We
will have the opportunity to listen to the homily he gave, view
photos, reminisce with those who participated, and nibble on
Polish delicacies. Please visit the Holy Family Center and
Parish Hall to see photo displays of the Pope’s visit.
In addition to celebrating this canonized saint, we also
celebrate those saints in the making – our spouses. How often
does a spouse go off to work whether they feel like it or not?
How many meals are prepared, loads of laundry done, trash
baskets emptied, diapers changed, crying babies and sick
children cared for? How many broken nights of sleep? How
many hours in prayer for our lost sheep? It is in serving those
whom we love, who have been entrusted to our care, day in
and day out, when no one is looking, or seems to appreciate
the daily grind – that is when saints are made.

Respect for Life
A bill to legalize doctor-prescribed suicide in Alaska has been
introduced in the State Legislature. House Bill 99, sponsored by
three Anchorage Democrats would permit doctors to prescribe
lethal drugs to patients for the purpose of suicide. Opponents of
the practice believe that patients – including those with terminal
illness – need proper care, not destruction. Archbishop Roger
Schwietz, who leads 30,000 Catholics across Southcentral
Alaska, strongly opposes the bill, saying it is not about granting
people a so-called “right to die,” but pushing “doctors to
prescribe lethal drugs to kill people.” The Fifth Commandment
forbids direct and intentional killing as gravely sinful.
