“The Importance of Outreach”

Breakout session #1 - Dickey Hall (Choose one of the following)
Jessica Hiler - “Organizing a Successful Service Project” An overview of
planning and implementing a community outreach successfully while involving all
membership classes (active, retired, ESP and student). We will focus specifically on the Read
Across America outreach event that is sponsored yearly by the Fayette County Education
Association. This event will serve as a model for planning your own community outreach.
Kandie McDaniel - “The Impact of Outreach” Villianization of our profession is
at its pinnacle, public opinion of education and educators is not what it once was. The best
way to combat this is to be proactive, find ways for your local association to reach out into the
community and for the community to become involved in your classroom. It can be a win-win
for everyone!

Susannah Kilbourne - “Community Literacy” This presentation and workshop
will focus on the creation and implementation of standards-based community literacy projects
across the curriculum. With an emphasis on the public work of rhetoric, our discussion will
explore the application of rhetorical skills in public service, civic participation, and community
engagement.
Lakilia Bedeau -“Understanding Diversity & Community Partnerships”
This workshop will explore the dimensions of diversity, reflect how diversity affects students,
etc. and show how a group affiliation affects self-perception and perception of others.
Participants will also learn the importance of developing community partnerships and ways to
expand their community involvement.
