Training
Our teacher training courses provide the knowledge
and skills needed to meet the professional
requirements of many differing fields of education.
MidKent College’s courses are ideal for those working with children, young people
and adults, as well as those teaching in the further education and training sectors.
Courses are suitable for experienced professionals who are already working within
the various education sectors, as well as those who are just embarking upon their
career. All of these courses are delivered from our Medway Campus or Maidstone
Campus in Kent and offered in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church
University.

The details…
This course provides a bridge for
people working with children and
young people to enter into the
teaching profession while remaining
in employment.
Alternatively participants may
choose to study concurrently for
the BA (Hons) and work towards
QTS. These routes take a further
two years after completing the
foundation degree.
Experience in the workplace is
crucial to the completion of the
course. Successful students are
able to progress to completing a
Bachelor’s Honours degree and
access the possibility of concurrently
gaining newly qualified teacher
status through a number of routes
including the Registered Teachers
Programme.

>The programme is made up of
12 modules (six in each academic
year).
>It provides academic, professional
and personal development
through attendance at taught
sessions and tutorials, and
through structured reflection,
observation and enquiry based
on the participant’s place of
work.
>Each of the modules within the
programme will have a specific
focus, but will be equivalent in
terms of the number of credits
and extent of assessable work
(240 credits completed over two
academic years).
Future prospects…
Upon successful completion of
the course participants may wish
to continue onto a third year with
Canterbury Christ Church University
to complete a BA (Hons) degree.
Following successful completion
of the programme, participants
would be eligible to work towards
qualified teacher status (QTS) on the
Graduate Teacher Programme or
gain a Post Graduate Certificate in
Education (PGCE).
Entry requirements…
You will need:
>GCSE English grade C or CSE
grade 1 (or equivalent)
>To be working in a school or
relevant educational setting for
10 hours per week or more.

This course will cover the
Introduction to Learning and
Teaching, the initial part of the DET
(Diploma in Education and Training)
qualification.
Future prospects…
After completing this initial
qualification, you have the option
to progress onto the Diploma in
Education & Training (DET).
You must have access to teaching
hours to progress.
Other important info…
>On successful completion of the
Diploma/PGCE you can apply for
Qualified Teacher, Learning and
Skills (QTLS) status through the
Institute for Learning (IfL).
>You do not need teaching hours
to do this award.

>You will need a good
understanding of written/verbal
English.

known as the Diploma in Teaching
in the Lifelong Learning Sector
(DTLLS) and includes the content
of the previous Award in Preparing
to Teach in the Lifelong Learning
Sector (PTLLS) and Certificate in

Future prospects…
Once you have completed this
course, you will have the option
to progress onto the Diploma in
Education - Training (DET) if you can
access 50 hours of teaching per year
(2 year course).

>Applicants who already hold
a first degree will have the
opportunity to study at level 6
in the second year to obtain a
Professional Graduate Certificate
in Education and Training.
>On successful completion of the
Diploma/PGCE you can apply for
Qualified Teacher, Learning and
Skills (QTLS) status through the
Institute for Learning (IfL).
>There is also an option to study
a specialist pathway in maths,
English, English for Speaker
of Other Languages (ESOL) or
Teaching Disabled Learners. For
this pathway, modules one and
five would be in a bespoke group
and taught externally.

The full diploma comprises of six
modules – three at level 4 and
three at level 5 (or level 6 for those
choosing the PGCE route).

You will need:
>A level 3 qualification in your
area of specialism
>30 hours of solo teaching
practice
>Good understanding of written/
verbal English.

COURSE LENGTH: 1 YEAR
The details…
The PGCE Post-Compulsory
will qualify you to teach in the
lifelong learning sector. This sector
offers you a breadth of possible
employment routes including
further education colleges,
adult and community learning,
work-based learning and prison
education. Validated by Canterbury
Christ Church University, the course
is delivered at MidKent College and
incorporate a teaching placement at
the College.

>Curriculum design for inclusive
practice
> Enhanced studies
During your teaching placement
within the College you will be
supported by a curriculum mentor

Future prospects…
Once you have graduated from the
PGCE course you will be qualified to
teach in further education colleges,
sixth form colleges, adult and
community learning, work-based
learning and prison education.
You’ll also be given advice and
support on searching and applying
for jobs.

>This course is ideal for those
seeking to work in the postcompulsory sector and those
who obtain the PGCE will not
be eligible for Qualified Teaching
Status. The programme is
endorsed by Lifelong Learning
UK and those obtaining the
PGCE will eligible to apply for
Qualified Teacher Learning and
Skills (QTLS) status.
>Offers of a place will only
be made after an interview.

Entry requirements…
>You should have a good honours
degree and demonstrate
competence regarding
communication, literacy and
numeracy.
>In your personal statement you

experience to demonstrate
involvement with young people
