SMALLWOOD STORE SETTLEMENT
Finally, after many years of frustration and expense, the
Smallwood Store & Museum and Florida Georgia Grove,
LLP, reached a settlement agreement on March 17.
According to the Collier County Attorney’s office notice
to the County Commissioners, “the four year long
Smallwood litigation has been resolved in favor of the County and the Smallwood
family. In an agreed-upon Final Judgment … the Developer has agreed that Mamie
Street is a publicly dedicated roadway, with the County and the Smallwood family
accepting this newly paved road ‘as is.’"
As a publicly dedicated roadway, neither the Smallwood Store nor Florida Georgia
Grove will have to maintain the road; it will be county’s responsibility. Also, the
public will be able to continue to use the road, as it has for nearly a hundred years.
Lynn McMillin says she is very appreciative for all the support the community has
given her family and the museum over the past four years. Under the Final Judgment
“…all claims which could have been raised by the parties in this lawsuit, are hereby
dismissed with prejudice, with each party to bear its or their own respective attorneys’
fees and costs.” So, the Smallwood Store is responsible for the debt it incurred in
fighting for the road to remain public and accessible. The Everglades Society for
Historic Preservation will continue to assist the historic store in its fundraising efforts.
FAMILY QUILTING TRADITION
by Dayna Fendrick
(first in a two-part series about the historic quilt by Dayna)
Growing up as a kid in Oklahoma, I got to spend most
summers with my grandparents, in a small farming town in the
western part of the state, much like Everglades City in that there were about 500
residents. Like the town of Everglade, it was the county seat with the County
Courthouse in the center of town ringed by stores & merchants. Once we got the
gardening & chores done, every day I would walk “uptown” to fetch the mail from the
Post Office and stop in at the Drug Store for a soda. My Grandmother was a prolific
quilter and took part in the “quilting circle,” going to different ladies’ homes to quilt
the project in the frame at the time. They all quilted by hand. During the long winter
evenings in rural Oklahoma, there was not much to do so Grandma had the quilting
frame set up in the living room most of the time. I got to watch and learn how to sew,
crochet and embroider from her. My other Grandmother, on Dad’s side, also did a lot
of needlework and was very accomplished at crochet, knitting and tatting.
Dad also got into quilting, once he was retired and was looking for something to
do. Or rather, Mom was looking for something for him to do to keep him out of her
hair! Dad had always been able to sketch, so he took to freehand quilting pretty
quickly. They now have a cottage industry in their basement, where Mom does sewing
& piecing and Dad does the quilting (Milton & Fae Wells pictured above). He takes in
to be continued.…
quilting work from several clients throughout the area.

Birding Festival
Birding festivals take place all over
Florida from October through March.
These
festivals
usually
include
presentations by bird experts, bird walks,
visits to local birding hotspots, bird photo
and art contests, exhibits and vendors.
While The Everglades Birding Festival is
held yearly, the areas visited are on the
eastern side of the Everglades. Everglades
City already has many amenities,
including kayak, boat and swamp buggy
tours that would make the town an ideal
location for a birding festival. A
committee will form to discuss planning a
small 2-day event for Fall 2015. Interested
parties will meet at Sweet Mayberry Café,
Wednesday, April 15, at 8 am.
FWC Meeting on Bears
The FWC will discuss new rules for
limited Bear Hunting Season on
Wednesday, April 15, in Tallahassee.
The rules would establish a limited
hunting season for black bears. Interested
individuals may speak at workshops or
meetings. For more information, visit

TAYLOR’S CORNER
Breaking news…….. There are only 37
more days left until school lets out on June 3
at 12 o’clock. It has been such a wonderful
year full of excitement. Last March was
Everglades City School’s first annual Aquafest! We had a great turn out and thank you
to all the sponsors who supported our school. Another big thanks
to everyone who showed up and the staff and some students that
helped.
Today, April 10, there will be a girls’ softball game at 4 o’clock
at home so some out and cheer them on. Also Thursday, April 16,
the Softball district tournaments start! Good luck lady Gators!
I’m practicing my underhand pitch for next year. On April 24
kindergarten through 5th grade will be taking a field trip to the
circus in Lee County! Last Friday, our third quarter ice dumping
took place in the courtyard. We dumped cold ice water on Mrs.
Ryan, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Whitcomb, Mr. Zuk, Ms. Secory, and Ms
Lee! Thank you to those teachers for being good sports and
participating! Also don’t forget FSA testing continues Monday
through Friday so be ready, do your best, make sure to get lots of
rest and have a healthy breakfast. I’ll see you around the corner!
Taylor Dahlke is in the 5th grade at Everglades City School.

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and
Community,
I would like to begin by thanking Mr.
Ragusa, Ms. Walker, Mr. Chappell, Dr. Joe
West, Vicky Wells, and Mayor Hamilton
for everything they did to make our very first Aquafest a
success. We had more than 50 people attend and our sponsors
were fantastic. It was truly a community effort with several of
the local restaurants contributing in a variety of ways. The
Aquafest will enable us to send our students on educational
fieldtrips that are related to this classroom and allow us to
purchase items to expand and improve on our lab. Planning for
next year’s Aquafest is already underway!
We are all well aware that April is a busy testing month for
our staff and students. However, we are always doing more
than testing. On April 14 we have the privilege of hosting a
School Board meeting in our cafeteria at 5:00 p.m. Then on the
16th we get to host the girls’ softball district championship
game. We wish our girls the very best as they move on in the
state tournaments. On the 17th Dr. Carper and Mr. Patt will be
taking a group of our elementary students to sing the national
anthem at a Fort Myers Miracle baseball game. The weekend
of April 24 is a busy one for us. On the 24th we have all K – 5
students going to the Lee County Civic Center to enjoy the
circus. Then on the evening of the 24th our seniors get to
celebrate their last year with Grad Bash at Busch Gardens in
Tampa. We will follow up these two events with our
Junior/Senior Prom on April 25.
In closing, I would like to once again thank all of our
community members for tremendous support throughout this
school year. It does take a Village to Educate a Child!
Gratefully yours, Bob Spano, Principal

Florida Tales
Potato Sandwich
by Chester Keene
I was asking the other day if anyone had
eaten a potato sandwich. The response
was a real surprise to me. When we were
growing up, times were not of the best.
Money was spent wisely and you always
went to bed with something in your
stomach. For breakfast if we had any rice
left over from supper Mom would save it
in the ice box for in the morning to be
served with sugar and milk. For school
lunch you brown bagged it and brought
the bag home for another day. By the
end of the school week, it was soaked
with grease stains and use. A sign of
some good things, you took what your
Mother made for you. Leftovers were
not uncommon; my favorite was a fried
potato sandwich, sometimes we had
some boiled potatoes left over or Mom
planned it that way. She would slice and
fry the potato and place it on bread with
mayo, and you had some good trading
material when lunch time rolled around.
You also had a nickel for milk that day.
Sometimes the other kids would ask
what you had to trade for their sandwich;
I always liked to swap for a peanut and
jelly sandwich. Sometimes you would
just share your lunch with someone less
fortunate than you; that was always a
good feeling and was the way we were
raised. We didn't have much but we were
raised country and love of family.

officer and Florida native. He retains the

Our Own Special Angel
Ever since Helen Bryan moved to Chokoloskee, she has been
involved in the community. She worked with the Chokoloskee
Church of God and its youth group. From ReachOut’s first meeting
Helen was involved with its many projects, including assisting Fran
Tifft with setting up the Thrift Shop. She helped with summer camp programs, shopping
trips for school clothes and Christmas presents for the kids. Helen is also the
photojournalist for The Mullet Rapper. One of her main ministries has been concerned with
the elderly. She organized the Diamonds of the Everglades Tea along with friend Margaret
Mannon in 2002, and Helen was recently honored at this year’s event. Shown above with
her are Hope Bowdey, age 92, (one of the oldest Diamonds attending) and her ORA friend
Nancy Wahl, both of whom have consistently been present at all teas since its beginning.
ReachOut Everglades sponsored the 13th Annual Diamonds of the Everglades Tea. Hostess
Anne Mitchell and Cheryl Underwood did a fantastic job along with volunteers.

Cinnamon Bark
Cuban Treefrog
(Canella winterana)
Scott Salley of Naples donated 18 trees to Everglades City,
Plantation Island and Chokoloskee in order to replenish these
Florida natives. Scott says this about the Cinnamon Bark:
“It is salt and drought resistant, but having grown in plastic
pots, they do like to have some water from time to time. Mature
height is approximately 30 feet, but it is slow to grow. It is a
native tree found in the Florida Keys but was almost made extinct
by plant collectors during the 1960s and 1970s. It can also be
found in the Bahamas and other Caribbean locations. It has a red
berry in November and December and propagation is by seed. It is
a wonderful tree for birds and requires little to no care once
established.” Thank you, Scott, for your generous donation to
beautify our Everglades area.
Canella, the diminutive of the Latin canna, a cane or reed,
was first applied to the bark of the Old World tree cassia,
Cinnamomum aromaticum, from the form of a roll or quill which
it assumed in drying. Winterana is an artifact from a period when
this plant was confused with Winter's bark which was named for
William Winter.
Panther Deaths
The remains of a 1-yr-old radio-collared male
Florida panther (FP237) were collected on
March 30 in Audubon’s Corkscrew Sanctuary. The cause of death
was intraspecific aggression. On April 3 the remains of a 3-4 year
old uncollared male Florida panther (UCFP239) were collected on
I-75 (Alligator Alley) 1.1 miles east of the tollbooth. The cause of
death was vehicle collision. The carcasses of both were sent to the
FWC Gainesville lab for necropsy. This is the 9th Florida Panther
road mortality and 14th Florida panther mortality overall for 2015.
Please be watchful and adhere to speed limits in wildlife areas
in southwest Florida. Visit www.floridapanthernet.org for info.
Burmese Pythons Study
Nearly 80% of radio-tracked marsh rabbits that died in Everglades
National Park were eaten by Burmese pythons, according to the
University of Florida and U.S. Geological Survey researchers. A
year later, there was no sign of a rabbit population in the study
area. To conduct the most recent study, researchers found areas
outside of the park that supported large and healthy populations of
marsh rabbits. They moved 31 marsh rabbits into select areas in
two experimental populations. They also put 15 rabbits in the
Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge and another 49 in
Fakahatchee Strand State Park, where they knew there would be
few, if any, pythons ─ and used those as control sites. All of the
rabbits were equipped with radio-collars so that they could be
regularly located. The researchers found that 77% of those that
died in the Everglades were eaten by Burmese pythons, and that
there was no sign of a rabbit population in the areas where they
released them in the park one year later. On the other hand,
rabbits remained common at the control site after the experiment.
The study was published online on March 18 in the journal
Proceedings of the Royal Academy B. For info, visit

The invasion of the Cuban treefrog is a case study in what
happens when an interloper that is a prolific breeder enters a new
environment
through
human
commercial activity. First identified
in the Florida Keys in the 1920s, this
frog is now found throughout
Florida and is rapidly moving into
Georgia and the Carolinas, as well
as westward toward the Texas coast.
The Cuban treefrog spreads not
only via ornamental plants, but also by motorized vehicles,
trailered boats, and many other unusual methods. This spread is
devastating to the indigenous frogs because the Cuban treefrog
grows to twice the size of both the green and squirrel treefrogs
and is capable of eating them. Furthermore, the Cuban treefrog
tadpole is a superior competitor to native tadpoles, causing even
more pressure on the indigenous species. It also appears to be
negatively impacting certain smaller fish in the locales it has
moved into. The situation has become so dire that Dr. Steve
Johnson, assistant professor of urban wildlife ecology at the
University of Florida, wrote an article in which he instructs
homeowners on how to euthanize and dispose of all the Cuban
treefrogs they might encounter around their homes. The
recommended method is to catch the frogs using a plastic bag and
freeze them.
The Cuban treefrog readily gets into homes and
condominiums, swims in toilets, can be found under sinks, has
been known to short out electrical boxes, and generally wreaks
havoc on the environment. Studies are now under way to explore
the use of biological or chemical deterrents to halt or at least slow
the continued spread of this invasive species.
The Cuban treefrog eats a wide variety of insects, but has also
been known to consume Indo-Pacific geckos, green and brown
anoles, and bird eggs, as well as some smaller hatchlings. It has
become the prey of choice for yellow rat, coral, and corn snakes
and is heavily preyed upon by rodents.
You should always take care in handling the Cuban treefrog as
its skin secretes a sticky substance that is extremely irritating to
the mucous membranes of humans, such as the eyes, ears, and
nose. People with allergies are especially vulnerable, and recovery
from contact with a Cuban treefrog may take several hours.
Although it has not been documented to be responsible in any dog
or cat deaths, pets should be kept away from this potentially
harmful frog. Given its ability to adapt and thrive in urban
environments, the Cuban treefrog battle will probably end with
the frog winning.

LOCAL HISTORY
Richard/Robert Edward (R.E.)
Hamilton by George Hamilton
Continued from the March 27th issue . . .
... Then there were some mounds that
were also meant to be avoided; mounds
that were built by the “Ancient Ones,” a
tribe that dates back over 2,000 yrs. In the
Islands, one such mound is known as
Gopher Key: a large complex of mounds,
parts as high as 35+ feet, with hand-dug
rings of canals and small burial mounds in
between the canals, all of which is a manmade shell island in the shape of a gopher
tortoise with its feet being 4 intersecting
creeks in the middle of a salt marsh.
Eventually, Chevalier found out about
Gopher Key, a large mound where the
Indians held special ceremonies. R.E.
didn’t really want him to see it. It, too, had
a lot of bad spirits, powerfully bad Spirits
and a lot of weird things happened to
ALOT of family members at Gopher Key.
In the late 1880s R.E. sold his rights to
Chatham Bend to Chevalier and moved his
family to Possum Key, a few miles inland
of the bend and, coincidentally, real close
to one of the entrances to Gopher Key.
They didn’t stay there very long either.
The skeeters were God awful and
surrounded by mangroves; there was no
breeze. Chevalier had found out about its
proximity to Gopher Key, so he happily
bought it from R.E.
With the family in tow, R.E. then
moved to an island outside the mouth of
Chatham River. It, too, was used by the
Indians. Since it was an outside island, the
Indians built a ring, approximately 50
yards around, by piling clam and oyster
shells. They left a gap of about 6 ft. for a
woven gate, turning the shallow pond into
a fish trap. Mullet, as well as other fish,
swim in a school
travelling the shore
of the islands with
the tide. The Indians
would weave a wing
out from the gap, usually made from palm
and palmetto fronds and stems. When the
fish swam into the wing they would just
turn and follow it thru the gap and into the
pond. The Indians also used the island as a
‘culling station’ for cleaning and sorting
the clam shells and conch shells that
they’d use to build mounds and lay them
in rows around certain islands down at the
low-tide line.....
to be continued…

OBITUARY
Marjorie E. Ivey
Marjorie Elizabeth (Ivey) Davis died on Feb. 24, 2015,
after a three-year battle with lung disease. She was 81 years
old. Marjorie was born and raised in the Ivey House. She
was a daughter of Agnes and Earl Ivey. Her sister, Dorothy
Ann Miller, lives in Plantation Island with her husband,
Captain Bill Miller.
Marjorie graduated from what was then known as
Everglades High School. She briefly attended the
University of Florida where she met her future husband,
Norm Davis, a broadcaster. They had two children, Patti
and Art. Their marriage ended in divorce after 47 years. Her children came to Everglades
City at least twice a year for their entire lives. They loved it -- and still do.
For nearly four decades, Marjorie lived in Miami, where she collected many friends
and loved playing and watching tennis. She was a fantastic cook and a loving mom. She
loved bringing her kids back to Everglades.
Her daughter, Patti Davis Mahoney, and son-in-law, Dan Mahoney, live in the
Washington D.C. area. She has one grandson, Danny Davis Mahoney. Her son, Art
Davis, and his wife Melissa, live in Phoenix AZ.
Marjorie was buried on March 7, 2015, near her mother and her two nieces, at Naples
Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Everglades Society
for Historic Preservation at P.O. Box 46, Everglades City, FL 34139.

TAXING THINGS
by Mike, The Tax Guy
Are You Self Employed? Check
Out These IRS Tax Tips
Many people who carry on a trade or
business
are
self-employed.
Landscapers, fishing guides, and contractors are examples of selfemployment. A few basic things about
how your income affects your federal tax
return:
• You must file a Schedule C, Profit or
Loss from Business, or Schedule C-EZ,
Net Profit from Business, with your
Form 1040.
• Deductions.
You can deduct
expenses you paid to run your business
that are both ordinary and necessary. An
ordinary expense is one that is common
and accepted in your industry. A
necessary expense is one that is helpful
and proper for your trade or business.
• In most cases, you can deduct
expenses in the same year you paid for
them, or incurred them. However, you
must ‘capitalize’ some costs. This means
you can deduct part of the cost over a
number of years.
• SE Income. You may have to pay
self-employment tax as well as income
tax if you made a profit. Selfemployment tax includes Social Security
and Medicare taxes. Use Schedule SE,
Self-Employment Tax, to figure the tax.
• Estimated Tax.
People typically
make these payments on income that is
not subject to withholding. You usually
pay this tax in four installments for each
year. If you do not pay enough tax
throughout the year, you may owe a
penalty.
What’s Happening in the Everglades City Area
From Savannah’s Eyes
Every spring at Florida Southwestern State College the chemistry class of
Dr. McGarity hosts a festival called “Green Fest” where the students
create projects on sustainability, and this year my chemistry class is
partaking in it! Our professor gave us all examples and ideas for the fest
that sounded interesting to do, though I had my mind set on making
homemade all-natural hair treatments. For the past few weeks my hair
has been dull and frizzy, and I’ve been meaning to put a heavy
conditioner on it. Well, what better way than to make your own; see how it works on you
and then tell people about it! This was the perfect project for me to display! So I went
online and got three recipes, one for frizzy hair, one for sun-damaged hair (which a lot of
people in Florida might want to look into), and the last one was for itchy scalp. My mom
and I went to the store and bought the ingredients we needed for all three (which you might
actually find a few if not all of them in your very own kitchen), and then we bought 30
bottles to put the treatments into and a poster board to display my information at Green
Fest. My professor thought my project was a great idea and said she couldn’t wait to see it
at the fest! Green Fest is in only a few days, and I can’t wait to give away my samples and
teach people how to make their own all-natural hair treatments! But, while I still have the
recipes fresh in my mind, let me give you one of the recipes.
For Sun-Damaged hair:
• ½ Cup of honey
• 1 or 2 TBS avocado
