Newsletter May 17, 2015 Church Family News Change of Address James and Elfrieda Nikkel #409 - 2626 Countess Street, Abbotsford, BC V2T 5P3 Condolences As a church family we express our sympathy to the following: Elenore Simpson whose husband, Earl, passed away on April 17th. At Earl's request there was no memorial service held. Pray for the Lord to comfort Eleanore as she mourns her loss. Eleanore attends the liturgical service. Student Summer Ministry Burseries They are available for students who will be volunteering at any summer camp or Bakerview’s day camp. Application forms are available in the Youth Centre, the literature stand by the mailboxes in the foyer, or at the church office. Please submit applications to the church office by June 30th. Women’s Ministry Frank Suderman whose wife, Annie, passed away May 1. A memorial service was held at Bakerview on May 7th. Annie was a sister to Abe Friesen and Nettie Wall who also attend the traditional service. Pray that the Lord would give Frank and the extended family peace. Milkshakes and Macchiatos will continue again this summer! It’s a time of gathering together with our favourite beverage and stay connected through the summer. We hope to arrange our times together visiting some of your gardens or patios! Engaging the Bible, 2015 Sunday Morning Parking Lot Security Are you reading? Are you reflecting on scripture daily? Are we all living it out? It’s our ongoing challenge. As well as reading, studying, memorizing and hearing it preached … now you can watch it! Tune in to watch the Bible as portrayed in A.D. The Bible continues, Sundays at 9:00 pm on NBC. Also you can watch episodes on computer, http:// www.nbc.com/ad-the-bible-continue or on You Version Bible App. Twelve episodes based on the New Testament. More volunteers are urgently needed to fill vacant spots to keep our vehicles on the church parking lot secure on Sundays. Brandon Collison is the supervisor. Music on a Wednesday The last concert of the season is May 20th featuring Paul Williamson, piano. Light refreshments are served at 11:30 am ($3.00) and the concert begins at 12:15 pm. Bakerview Church Family Camp June 5-7 at Stillwood Camp and Conference Centre. Register today. Final registration deadline is May 25th. A registration form for Sunday only is available after the services on May 24th or at the church office. New Member Class A new member class will be held on Wednesday, May 27th at 7:00 pm for individuals who are transferring from a Mennonite Brethren Church or have been baptized as adults on the confession of their faith. If you would like to participate, please register with the church office and obtain a membership packet. Those individuals who have completed the baptism classes will also share their testimonies. Bakerview Church AGM The Annual General Meeting is Wednesday, June 10th in the Multipurpose Centre. The dinner is at 6:00 pm and the meeting starts at 7:00 pm. Dinner tickets ($5.00) and the AGM Reports will be available next Sunday, May 24. We ended the fiscal year with a deficit of approx. $48,000. Board of Finance & Management along with Church Council are asking what additional gift you could give at the AGM to eliminate this deficit. Children’s Ministry What’s happening . . . She will assist Pastor Stephanie with Children’s Summer Programs and Carla Thiessen with special youth events. This position is being partially funded through the ministry portion of estate funds. God, Sex & Church Canadian Mennonite Brethren have embarked as a denominational community on a conversation about what their Christian commitments entail in terms of the expression of their human sexuality. To prepare for October’s study conference in Winnipeg the Canadian Board of Faith and Life (BFL) has prepared a study guide for use by all Canadian Mennonite Brethren churches and leaders. This study guide, based on Scripture and the Mennonite Brethren Confession of Faith, provides direction, guidance, and excellent discussion questions and is available at http://studyconference.mennonitebrethren.ca. The BFL wants as many Mennonite Brethren as possible to have the opportunity to pray and think well about human sexuality. Delegates, please register at the Bakerview Church office before May 31st. Pines Bible Camp Work Weekend: June 26-29 - contact Darrell Rempel (604-854-6154) if interested. Operation Baby Bottle Support the ministry of “Your Pregnancy Options.” Bottles are still available at the church office. Fill them with cash or cheques and return them on Father’s Day. Free will offering will be taken. Gospel Music Festival is Saturday, June 13th, 6:30 pm at Christian Life Assembly (21277 - 56 Avenue, Langley). Missions Fest Vancouver invites you to join the church of Metro Vancouver at Calvary Worship Centre (11125 124 Street, Surrey) on Sunday, May 24th at 6:00 pm on the Global Day of Prayer to pray for our cities, nation and world. Tabor Village is celebrating its 55th Anniversary Saturday, June 20th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm with a Spring Fair for children and families. General admission is $5.00 at the gate. Bakerview Music Academy year-end program is Thursday, May 28th, 7:00 pm at Bakerview Church. All the children will be performing on their instrument and singing in the choir. Contemplative Evening of Sung Prayers, inspired by the music and prayers of Taizé. This event takes place Saturday, May 30th from 8:00 - 9:00 pm at Westminster Abbey, Mission. Will and Estate Planning Seminar is Saturday, June 6th from 10:00 - 11:30 am at MEI Secondary School. Composer Larry Nickel will be directing the Jubilate Vocal Ensemble, Betty Suderman, piano, with soloists and orchestra. This event is June 6th, 8:00 pm at Shaunessy Heights United Church, Vancouver. LCC International University Summer Language Institute LCC International University is seeking English language teachers with a heart for teenagers to engage in our Summer Language Institute, a three week program for European youth, primarily ages 14-24. Nearly 260 students come from different countries to live together and to study English. Most students are intermediate to advanced learners. Besides teaching, teachers participate in conversation groups and homework sessions. The program dates for teachers (including orientation) are July 6 – August 2, 2015.
