FREE, Fun Enrichment Camp
July 7 - July 23, 2015 • Bedford Area High School
Have you ever wanted to be the star of your own fantasy video? Learn to
create fabulous images in PhotoShop? Dig for Native American
artifacts? Build and program Lego Robots? Explore computer
aided design? Make costumes, backdrops, shoot and edit video?
Learn to stretch your own canvas and paint in a variety of styles?
If you’re in 5th-11th grade, you can have fun with friends, learn new skills and explore areas that may be new to you during a three-week, nine-session Summer Camp sponsored by the Bedford County 21st Century Community Learning Centers Consortium. Camp will run July 7-23, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesdays,
8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Bedford. Students from throughout Bedford
County are invited to attend - busing will be provided to and from your
Middle/High Schools. The Camps are completely FREE - including
instruction, supplies, a field trip and Camp t-shirt.
To sign-up, complete and return the pre-registration form on the back listing your
first, second and third choices. You’ll receive a followup confirmation with information to complete
your registration. Workshop space is limited and programs will be filled on a first-come basis, Program Descriptions
“Summer Shorts” drama & film camp! #1 - Oscars Academy - Students who enroll in the “Oscars Academy” workshop
will learn the art of acting, screenplay writing, plot development, character development and staging. Working in small groups they will create their own film. This workshop will result in students
directing and acting in their own movies! Workshop led by Dawn Ziviello.
#2 - Prop Masters - At the same time, students enrolled in the "Prop Masters”
workshop will work with stories being developed in the “Oscars Academy” workshop to create unique
costumes, special FX make up and props to develop camera ready visual elements for film. Students in both
workshops will combine to go “on location” to shoot and edit their films. Workshop led by Michael Corle.
#3 - Robotics & Engineering Participants will explore three areas of robotics and engineering, including: Using Lego Minstorm NXT Robots and VEX Robots, students build and program the robots to complete specific tasks and challenges. Students will learn to use AutoCAD to draw 2 dimensional views and will use those blueprints to construct and test a Box Girder as well as Balsa Wood Tower. They will also learn about the forces that act on them while they are under stress. The students will then test the box girders to see who can build the most efficient structure. Workshop led by Doug Alexander and
Doug Pauley.
# 4 - Art That Wouldn't Be Taught In School Led by a
working artist, this art camp will include many projects that at
times may be a bit unusual. Some paintings will be made in an outof-the-ordinary way, such as incorporating science by making paint
explode, using a pendulum, and melting crayons. Participants will
learn how to stretch their own canvas, how different materials react
with and create different effects in watercolor, as well as learning
tips and tricks in drawing. Workshop led by Janelle Cogan.
# 5 - Ceramics This enrichment class is designed for students who have
an interest in working with clay. Students will explore ways to construct
pottery using hand building and potter’s wheel techniques. Students will
also be able to bisque fire and glaze fire the pottery they create. Well
thought out forms, designs and functional uses along with good
craftsmanship will be emphasized. Workshop led by Todd Hoover.
# 6 - Computer Aided Graphic Design This course is designed to
provide students with basic knowledge and understanding of concepts
dealing with graphic design. The workshop will cover fundamentals of graphic design layout, the design
process, design elements and image manipulation. Students will complete projects dealing with
Photoshop, digital multimedia production and digital photography. Workshop led by Cody Buterbaugh.
# 7 - Archaeology at Fort Bedford Led by a working archaeologist,
activities in this hands-on Archaeology workshop will focus on Bedford’s
past and geography from the prehistoric, to the colonial establishment
of the Fort Bedford, to the development of Bedford Borough and
County in the 19th century. Using the 3,000 ancient stone tools,
ceramics and other artifacts housed at the museum, students will do
hands on activities in addition to learning how archaeological sites are
formed. Workshops will culminate in the development of exhibit
designs. This Camp will be held on the grounds of the Fort Bedford
Museum in downtown Bedford. Workshop led by Suzanne Trussell.
