Concept for Call for 2 trainers for Training of Trainers for Erasmus+: Youth in Action project
Intro
In September the Training of Trainers (ToT) for Erasmus+: Youth in Action projects (ToT)
coordinated by SALTO Training and Cooperation RC for participating NAs will starts it’s 15th
edition. At the moment the team for the course is formed by Hazel Low (since edition 7),
Peter Hofmann (since edition 3) and Paul Kloosterman (since edition 2). Hazel Low decided
not to be part of the team any longer in the edition coming up. Peter Hofmann announced
that he will leave the team after the 15th edition. This means that as well in September 2015
as in June 2016 (from edition 16 on the course will start in June to fit it better in one TCA
budget period) a replacement in the team is needed. Paul Kloosterman will stay in the team.
The two new team-members will be recruited in one application procedure taking place
between the March and the 15th of June 2015.
Profile of the new trainers
The ETS Competence Model for trainers working at international level will be used as a
starting point for describing the profile. However being part of the Tot trainers’ team
requires some specific further competences:
- Candidates should be able to reflect on the specific role of trainers in the Erasmus+:
Youth in Action Programme and to transfer those reflections into ideas how to
facilitate the learning of trainers,

Candidates should be able to act as a facilitator in a long-term learning process with
different roles: being a support person for training practice project teams, being
active in the online-learning environment,

Candidates should be able to act as a mentor for 8 participants, mentoring is an
important part of the one-year learning process in ToT.
One challenge in this course is that often participants have high expectations towards the
experiences and expertise of the trainers in the ToT-team. Although these expectations
might be unrealistic it needs some self-awareness and self-confidence to deal with these
expectations and the challenges they bring.
Experience with the different activities in the Youth in Action/Erasmus+: Youth in Action
Programme and knowledge about developments in European Youth/Education policy is
crucial.
For the position that starts within edition 15 a female trainer is needed. The candidates for
this position should be available for the dates that are already set for the three seminars and
for the first prep-meeting.
Application procedure
The call will be closed on 3rd May 2015. The selection will be done by appointed members of
the Helsinki Umbrella Group (www.salto-youth.net/HUG) in cooperation with Rita Bergstein
and Udo Teichmann from SALTO T&C RC. To support the selection committee, a proposal
for a priority list of suitable applicants will be provided by Rita Bergstein and Paul
Kloosterman.
The final decision will be made by 15th June 2015.
The ones selected will be informed that the position is provisionally for one year. After the
first year an evaluation will take place to decide if the cooperation should be continued.
The intention is to take advantage of the recent developments of the Competence Model for
trainers working at international level in the framework of the European Training Strategy
(www.salto-youth.net/trainercompetences) and to integrate, part of, the competences as a
reflection tool in the application procedure.
Applicants will be explicitly invited to carry out a self-reflection as part of the application on
three of the six competences: ‘Understand and facilitate individual and group learning
processes’, ‘Learning to Learn’ and ‘Designing Educational Programmes’. The ability to
reflect on own competences is an important attitude for a trainer in ToT where participants
are invited constantly to do so. Applicants will be asked to give for this part a reference
person. The reference persons will only be contacted in the second round of the application
procedure (after the pre-selection). They will be asked to write their experiences with the
applicant when it comes to the 3 competences.
The self-assessment part in the application process will act as a pilot for other applicationprocedures for calls for trainers within the Erasmus+: Youth in Action Programme. This will
be communicated to applicants and reference-persons and they will be asked to participate
in an evaluation a few months after the procedure.
