2015 Vintners Dinner Silent Auction
Silent Auction 1 - Double Magnum Château Pape Clement 1986 estimated value: $850 500 “Still young and vibrant, with a deep ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of black currants intermixed with earth and some vanilla, this medium-bodied wine is very graceful, stylish, and classic, with relatively high tannin, a coolerclimate flavor profile, and long, moderately tannic finish. Still youthful and vigorous, this wine should evolve effortlessly for at least another 10-15 years.” (91 points) -Robert Parker Donated by Friends of Heart’s Delight 1 - Magnum Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte 2005 estimated value: $300 501 “I know it sounds like a broken record, but this may be the best Smith-HautLafitte ever made… One can’t say enough about the accomplishments the Cathiards have achieved at this property since 1990. Prior to their purchase of the property, appallingly diluted, vegetal, fruitless, charmless wines were produced, but they have turned Smith-Haut-Lafitte into a showcase Pessac-Leognan. The inky/blue/purple-tinged 2005’s extraordinary nose reeks of charcoal, incense, scorched earth, abundant blackberry, blueberry, and cherry fruit, toast, and spice. Good acidity, huge but sweet tannin, and fabulous precision as well as definition characterize this full-bodied, superconcentrated effort. It should prove to be among the longest-lived wines yet made by the Cathiards.” (95 points) -Robert Parker Donated by Susan and Manfred Arnold 96 2 - Magnums of Aubert Wines Reuling Vineyard Pinot Noir estimated value: $600 502 1 - Magnum Aubert Pinot Noir Reuling Vineyard 2004 1 - Magnum Aubert Pinot Noir Reuling Vineyard 2005 Awarded 96 points, Robert Parker notes that the 2004 Reuling Vineyard Pinot Noir “…reveals the floral, blueberry, and raspberry-scented perfume of a sublime Richebourg or Grands Echezeaux. It possesses sweet plum and flower characteristics, fabulous body, a terrific texture, and a long, pure finish. Wow... this stunning Pinot Noir could easily have been made at Burgundy’s most famous domaine!” Given 95 points by Parker, “The 2005 Pinot Noir Reuling Vineyard reminds me of a top DRC Richebourg. Of course, this is made from the famed Calera clone of Pinot Noir, which was suitcased in from one of the most renowned vineyards in Burgundy. The wine exhibits that beautiful sweet black currant, flowery nose, with sweet black raspberry and very ripe cherry notes intermixed with spring flowers and some spice from the wood. A wine of considerable opulence, complexity, and tremendously savory, expansive texture, this wine should drink beautifully for at least a decade.” Donated by Jeffrey Schragg & Mary Jo George 1 - 3 Liter Château Miraval Cotes de Provence Rosé 2013 estimated value: $500 503 This is a powerhouse team bringing you this lovely rosé -Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, together with the Perrins, one of France’s leading wine producing families. We have our friend, Danny Haas of Vineyards Brands to thank for the original design on this one-of-a-kind bottle. “Clean, refreshing and classy… enjoy this beauty over the coming summer.” (90 points) -The Wine Advocate Donated by The Perrin Family 97 5 - bottles Pax Syrah Cuvée Keltie 2007 estimated value: $300 504 “The 2007 Pax Cellars Syrah Cuvée Keltie (100% Syrah, 100% whole clusters, 150 cases produced) was aged 26 months in neutral French oak. It is meant to be a long-lived wine, and I suspect it will evolve for 15-20+ years. A dense purple color is followed by aromas of smoky bacon fat, bouquet garni, blackberries, and cassis, gripping tannin, and lots of rustic meat and earth undertones. This big, robust, almost savage wine could easily be confused with a top Cornas from France’s northern Rhone. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and enjoy it over the following two decades.” (94 points) -Robert Parker Donated by Friends of Heart’s Delight 98 Rhys Vineyards 2012 Lot estimated value: $800 505 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 - Magnum Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard 2012 bottle Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard 2012 Magnum Rhys Pinot Noir San Mateo County 2012 bottle Rhys Pinot Noir San Mateo County 2012 Magnum Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard 2012 bottle Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard 2012 Magnum Rhys Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard 2012 bottle Rhys Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard 2012 Awarded 93 points, John Gilman notes that “The 2012 Family Farm Vineyard bottling of pinot from Rhys is another outstanding example of the vintage, delivering an excellent and exotically spiced bouquet of dark berries, black currants, woodsmoke, fresh thyme, mustard seed, dried eucalyptus, beef stock, dark soil tones and a touch of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and still very primary, with moderate tannins, lovely focus and grip, tangy acids and a long, classy and light on its feet finish. Beautiful juice. 2018-2040.” Stephen Tanzer Awarded the 2012 San Mateo County 91 points describing it as “Bright ruby. Pungent dark berries and cherry on the nose, with smoky mineral and rose nuances adding complexity. On the palate, juicy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors are complicated by suggestions of licorice and candied rose. Spreads out nicely on the finish, which is framed by supple, well-knit tannins. This sexy pinot is delicious right now.” “The 2012 Alpine Vineyard chardonnay from Kevin Harvey and his very talented team at Rhys Vineyards is another absolutely brilliant bottle of chardonnay…offering a stellar bouquet of pear, white peach, iodine, a touch of acacia blossom, a bit of crème patissière, complex soil tones and a nice base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and snappy, with a superb core of fruit, laser-like focus, great mineral drive and a very long, very young and very classy finish. This is simply a stunning bottle in the making, with grand cru authority, but it is still a puppy and needs plenty of bottle age to unwind from behind its racy and soil-driven structure.” (96+ points) -John Gilman John Gilman gave the 2012 Bearwallow 92+ pointes and notes that it “…is an excellent wine year in and year out, with the black fruity personality of Mendocino pinot very much in evidence in the 2012 version. The excellent bouquet jumps from the glass in a mix of dark berries, espresso, dried eucalyptus, chicory, dark soil tones, botanicals and a touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, deep and primary, with a good core, moderate tannins and a very long, classy and soulful finish. …there is great personality here and this is a wine that is going to age beautifully.” Donated by Maureen Nelson 99 Robert Trent Jones Golf Package estimated value: $1,500 506 Golf for two including a 90-minute private golf lesson and full round with caddies Dinner for two couples in the RTJ Dining Room Stay for two couples, each with their own RTJ Clubhouse Suite You and a friend will join two RTJ members for a fantastic day of golf at RTJ in Gainesville, Virginia. Donated by Sotheby’s Wine 103 3 - Magnums of Beaux Frères Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir 2009 515 estimated value: $525 “The aromas are earthy – with underbrush and herbs playing off the dark fruit. Medium to full bodied, highlighting this vintages hallmarks – low acidity and sweet tannin; it is silky and spicy with an earthiness comparable to a premier cru from the Nuits-St.-Georges. Normally our wines are Oregon versions of burgundies from the northern Côtes de Nuits, but this offering has a distinct terroirs earthiness that sets it apart from other wines.” -Vineyard tasting notes Donated by Jeffrey Schragg & Mary Jo George 2 - bottles of 1977 Vintage Port estimated value: $315 516 1 - bottle Dow’s Silver Jubilee Vintage Port 1977 1 - bottle Taylor’s Vintage Port 1977 1977 was hailed as one of the vintages of the century - a classic. The Wine Spectator awarded Dow’s Silver Jubliee 92 points noting “Aromas of coffee, prune and milk chocolate. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a licorice, berry, custard and cream character. Firm and racy. Long and delicious. Firm and beautiful. Just ready now.” Taylor’s Vintage Port was awarded 96 points by The Wine Advocate for the 1977 vintage noting “Good ruby color still. The nose is fresh, with lots of crushed berry and plum, with a hint of piecrust. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and a caressing texture. This delivers loads of complex fruit and spiciness. Medium-sweet. A beauty. Will improve for decades, but why wait?” Donated by Susan and Manfred Arnold 104 1 - bottle Château d’Yquem 1998 517 estimated value: $350 “The 1998 Château Yquem was released several months ago. This estate does not allow tasting from cask (where the wine spends 42 months), and it is not released until five years after the vintage. The 1998 Yquem is a great success. It is well-delineated, with wonderfully sweet aromas of creme brulee, pineapples, apricots, and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it is not as sweet as the biggest/richest Yquem vintages, but it is gorgeously pure, precise, and strikingly complex. Already approachable, it should evolve for 30-50 years ... without a doubt.” (95 points) -Robert Parker Donated by Jacob Flores 1 - bottle Château Cheval Blanc 1998 estimated value: $750 518 “I seriously underestimated this wine, as I have often tended to do with Cheval Blanc. A potentially immortal example that has gained significant weight since it has been bottled, this blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot has a saturated purple color and a glorious nose of menthol, plums, mulberries, new saddle leather, cocoa, and vanilla. Remarkably fuller-bodied than I ever remembered it young, with an amazingly seamless texture and tremendous concentration and extract, this full-bodied yet gorgeously pure and elegant wine is impeccably balanced and certainly one of the all-time great Cheval Blancs. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2030.” (96+ points) -Robert Parker Donated by Roger Schagrin ‘Jefferson Memorial in Summer’s Light’ Photograph estimated value: $2,000 519 Fine Art Photograph 30”x40” Limited Edition Print - art is not framed.
