Everyone involved had a great time!!
They are poets... and they know it!
As many of you may know, in March this
year we were pleased to announce that
Burnage Media Arts College had won the
Wordsmith Poetry Awards 2011.
The four pupils who took part in the awards were,
Zaigham Ali Shan, Farhan Ahmed, Abdiqain Ali and
Asim Saeed. The dedicated four, spent weeks in
rehearsals, and had to build up a huge amount of
confidence in order to perform their work in front
of a large audience.
A massive well done again to the pupils involved, and
to those who have supported them along the way!
The competition sees scripts
submitted by young playwrights
performed on stage, with a
winner selected by the audience.
Three professional writers visited
our school and staged four script
writing workshops.
This opportunity was due to
Burnage’s partnership with the
Theatre, which has been formed
as part of the School’s
Enrichment Programme. This
aims to educate pupils on a wide
variety of cultural arts.
The workshop was led by
Burnage teachers, Jude Ellson
and Mark Roberts, and the boys
were given the themes of ‘lies
and rumours’ on which to base
their ten minute plays.
A script penned by Vincent
French, Delwar Kabir,Jaoa Sousa,
Rizwan Farooq and Mazharul
Islam was voted by the audience
as the overall winner. Vincent
French said, “It was exciting
watching the scenarios I had
created be acted out in a real
theatre by professional
performers.”
“When the audience was voting, I
was really nervous. All of the
plays were very good so to be the
overall winner is fantastic. It has
inspired me to write more short
plays in my spare time,” he added.
