Previous Month - Longwood Public Library
Longwood Public Library March/April 2015 Newsletter 2014 Annual Report to the Community It’s been a great year for the Longwood Public Library, as we watch our library transform and grow into a high performance building and a true community center. Staff have been busy offering programs and services from our temporary location in the King Kullen shopping center, as well as program sites around the district. But we are all looking forward to spring, followed by our late summer move back to our “home”. We will hold our Annual Budget Vote & Trustee Election on Tuesday, April 14, 8:00 am – 9:00 pm. The budget information meeting is Wednesday, March 18 at 7:00 pm, and the proposed budget will be available at the library by March 1. The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce there will be no override of the state tax cap this year. If you have any questions about the budget or the library, please contact the library director, Suzanne Johnson, 924-6400 x275 or by email suzanne@longwoodlibrary.org. 2014 The Year in Review • • • • • • Expansion and renovation of the library proceeded full steam ahead! Successfully sold our bonds at a very competitive rate under 3%, which will save substantial interest over the life of the bond. Continued to serve the public from our temporary location Offered programs for all ages in numerous locations around the district Expanded outreach to additional sites: Leisure Knoll & Meadowbrook Pointe Links Added new museum passes, including the Fire Island Lighthouse & Safari Adventure • • • • • There are 48,375 cardholders and 305,910 annual visitors to the library More than 637,000 items were checked out Patrons downloaded more than 40,000 free ebooks, a 17% increase over 2013 Librarians conducted over 300 one-on-one technology help sessions Free museum passes were borrowed 1061 times, saving taxpayers $35,000 A Few Statistics from 2014 We Need Your Support Your support in 2015-2016 will help us expand our current level of services and programs when we return to our renovated facility. Watch for a special budget mailing in late March. Library Update! Inside the building, much progress has been made. Tan-colored spray foam insulation can be seen here along the walls and on the ceiling of the new auditorium. Also visible in the photo are a stack of “borrowed light” frames – interior windows that will allow daylight to pass through the building. Two important features of the transformed library will be natural light and improved energy efficiency! March is Women’s History Month - Legendary Women of Long Island Monday, March 16 at 7:00 pm Registration begins March 1 In honor of Women’s History Month, noted Long Island Gold Coast expert and bestselling author Monica Randall will examine the lives of an elite group of glamorous women who lived during the glory days of Long Island’s fabled Gold Coast. Alva Vanderbilt, Zelda Fitzgerald, Barbara Hutton and Gertrude Whitney were some of the first American superstars as their lives, loves, and scandals played out on the pages of newspapers all over the country. Ms. Randall will discuss these women’s lives and many others. (LWA121) Location: LHS Room 1502 Children’s Programs Unless otherwise noted, all programs for children from birth through Pre-K are intended for parents and children together. Programs for children in grades K-6 are intended for children on their own. Read Aloud 15 Minutes Research shows that reading aloud with children is the single most important thing to prepare a child for reading and learning. The Read Aloud 15 Minutes national campaign promotes parents reading aloud to their children at least 15 minutes every day starting at birth. Parents are children’s first and most important teachers. Begin your child’s learning journey today! Stop by the Children’s Department to find out more. Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! Monday, March 2 at 10:30 am OR 2:00 pm Children (2 years–Pre K) Registration is ongoing One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish! Come and celebrate the wild and wacky world of all things Seuss! Stories, crafts and a fun time await. (LWJ510) Location: YPC PlayTown Tuesday, March 3 at 10:30 am OR 2:00 pm Children (2 years–Pre K) Registration is ongoing Come visit Longwood’s newest “community,” PlayTown! Children will use their imaginations as they visit and play in PlayTown’s supermarket, animal hospital, library and other community centers. By participating in dramatic play with costumes and acting out behaviors of community helpers, children develop important social/emotional skills. It helps them understand the world around them and their place in it. Fun and learning for your little one. (LWJ300) Paws for Reading Wednesdays, March 4, 18 April 1, 15 and May 6, 27 from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm Drop in only (no registration) Man’s best friend can do a lot more than fetch and roll over. Research now suggests that dogs can actually help children learn to read. Come meet Karen Maier and one of her certified therapy dogs for a 15-minute reading session. For young children one of the big challenges in learning to read is the embarrassment of making mistakes. Reading to dogs provides a simple solution: a non-judgmental, comforting furry friend who “listens” and takes the pressure off of the child as he learns to read. This program will be a “drop-in” for any child who is a reader through grade 6. Karen will be here beginning at 4:30 pm with the last session beginning no later than 5:45 pm. (LWJ905) Location: LPL Miss Tiffany’s Tappin’ Toes Thursdays, March 5, 12 and 19 at 11:00 am Children (3 years-Pre K) Registration is ongoing Does your child love to dance around and perform? April is Long Island Reads Month! 2015 LONG ISLAND READS SELECTION! The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman Thursday, April 16 at 3:15 pm Mesmerizing and illuminating, The Museum of Extraordinary Things is the story of an electric and impassioned love between two vastly different souls in New York during the volatile first decades of the 20th century. Coralie Sardie is the daughter of the sinister impresario behind the Museum of Extraordinary Things, a Coney Island boardwalk freak show that thrills the masses. An exceptional swimmer, Coralie appears as the Mermaid in her father’s “museum,” alongside performers like the Wolfman, the Butterfly Girl, and a one-hundred-year-old turtle. One night Coralie stumbles upon Eddie Cohen, a striking young man taking pictures of moonlit trees in the woods off the Hudson River. With its colorful crowds of bootleggers, heiresses, thugs and idealists, New York itself becomes a riveting character as Hoffman weaves her trademark magic, romance and masterful storytelling to unite Coralie and Eddie in a moving story of young love in tumultuous times.
