BASEBALL OUTING IN JUNE We are planning another Sky Sox game on June 28th at 5 pm. There will be Baseball, Burgers, Hot Dogs and Fireworks! More information to come in the June newsletter. Kerry Hefta, Sports Director PRESIDENT’S COLUMN For those of you who attend the monthly business meetings, thank you. They can be long and the business part often gets in the way of our real purpose - to have coffee and cake and visit with old friends. But the meetings lately have had good discussions on issues, had interesting programs, and included dancing. If you can come out on the second Wednesday at 7:00 pm, we would appreciate your participation. I am reading one the books from our lodge library for my third literature medal Portrait of a Nation - Norway. Simple title - big, long book. 592 12x18 pages. The bulk of the book is thirteen chapters on different subjects from politics and business to cuisine to sports, environmental conservation, education, history, religion and art each by a different writer. Additionally, there is an anthology of Norwegian poetry, pictures from a dozen recognized photographers, and fifteen literary portraits of prominent personalities in Norway’s history. This is a great book for learning about Norway. As Sonja says: There it is. Go read. Frokost was, once again, the premier event of the year. 238 happy people got to sample forty different dishes. Some twenty-five members worked for two days preparing and dishing up the meal not including time spent making lefsa and other dishes beforehand. The whole operation is a wonder to watch and Sissel Disbrow deserves much recognition and appreciation for her planning, advance buying and effective leadership. As important, Sissel has everything (and I mean everything) written down and photographed and saved in a vinyl binder. This is very thoughtful and not very common among our sister lodges. For all that you do for Fjellheim, Sissel, we are very grateful. Mange Tusen Takk. Mike Johaneson www.sonsofnorwaycs.com -2- facebook.com/sonsofnorwaycs GAME AND CARD SOCIAL May game and card social will be Tuesday the 7th at 12:30 PM at the Lodge. VIKING SISTERS BAKING POWDER BISCUITS 17 MAI PARTY AT VIKING HALL The following recipe is for the biscuits served at the March Biscuits and Gravy breakfast. It was delicious, many came back for seconds and thirds. SUNDAY, May 19th, 1:00 to 3:30pm at Fjellheim Lodge 2 cup sifted flour 4 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup shortening (butter is best) 1 egg and enough milk to make one cup (mix together) Sift dry ingredients into mixing bowl. Add shortening and work quickly into pebbly crumbs. Add milk/egg mixture, mix gently and turn out onto a floured board. Pat or roll to 1 inch thick, cut into rounds or squares. Bake at 450 degrees for 15-17 minutes. We will meet May 2 at 1 PM at the Lodge. We will be making Christmas decorations for the Boutique in November. All women are welcome. Ah, Syttende Mai, the seventeenth of May, is Norway’s national day! In 1814, elected representatives met in Eidsvoll and adopted a constitution establishing a government for an independent Norway. Come join us at the Lodge as we commemorate this day with food, games for the kids, songs, and a parade. Decorations will be provided for bikes, trikes, scooters and wagons. A special guest will be there, too. Hurra, Hurra, Hurra! Participation in this festival honors the heritage and culture of Lincoln County Colorado settlers and their descendants, and the Norwegian folk-art display by Fjelldalen Lodge is in honor of the many Norwegian immigrants that settled in the area in the 1800’s. In past years, several members of other Colorado Lodges have joined with Fjelldalen with their handiwork etc. We are aware that many of you have now been taking part in the Sons of Norway Cultural Skills program and have earned your Cultural Skills pins and medals. We would love to have you join us to display and tell about what you have accomplished. Bring your bunad and be part of the bunad show. Please call me! She married Richard Tygerson at McClellan Air Force Base in 1955. She worked as a telephone operator at Southwestern Bell in Sacramento before retiring. She loved ceramics, crafts, and playing bridge. She is survived by husband Richard, a sister Joyce Chamberlain, a daughter Joanne Easterling, 3 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. She was active in the lodge in social affairs and in women’s groups. Her husband Rich is remembered as the harmonica virtuoso who played with the Fjellheim Fem in their salad days. Cards may be sent to Richard in care of Joanne Easterling, 19670 East County Road, Olustee, Ok 73560. Our condolences to the family. THE SUNNY CORNER Happy May Day to everyone! Kathleen Harstad reports that former member, Doris Tygerson, passed away March 7, 2013 in Altus, OK. She also says that Richard has taken it very hard and has been in the hospital, but is now in an assisted living facility. If members wish to send a card, please send it to his daughter, Joann Easterling, 19670 East County Road 171, Olustee, OK 73560. She will take any mail to him. Our condolences and prayers go out to the family. I have not heard of any members who are under the weather. But if you know of anyone who is not well, please call me. As we move from snow in March and April to hopefully rain in May, an ode to spring: "Spring makes its own statement, so loud and clear that the gardener seems to be only one of the instruments, not the composer." ~Geoffrey B. Charlesworth Karen Ravnaas, Sunshine Director, 390-0621 FROKOST WRAP UP Mange tusen takk to all of the Frokost volunteers. We held another successful Frokost, thanks to all of you. Our attendance was 237 and our profit was OVER $3000.00! Without the help of all of you, our Frokost would not be held. Many of you donated food and decorations, but most of all you gave of your time. Food was prepared at home and at the Lodge, many of you came to the Lodge two days prior to the event to offer assistance in the preparation and set-up of the Frokost. It is with great appreciation that I personally thank each and every one of you for your outstanding performance. SLOTNIK www.nytimes.com Published: March 27, 2013 Hjalmar Andersen, a Norwegian speed skater who broke world records in the early 1950s and won three gold medals at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, died on Wednesday in Oslo. He was 90. Agence France-Presse — Getty Images He had been hospitalized after falling at his home in Tønsberg on Monday, Jamie Miller, a spokeswoman for United States Speedskating, said. Items included in complete outfit: Bonnet, Blouse (size 10-12), Belt, Purse, Dress (10 -12), Apron, Sølje and Jewelry (two earrings, one broken but can be fixed, neck pin). The Bunad will be on display at May and June meetings. Minimum bid is $1,500. If we do not get any bids by the July 1 deadline, we will open the bidding to other S/N Lodges. Fjellheim Executive Board THE DREKAR CORNER On a cold and snowy April night; six hearty fellow lodge members met to start planning our Drekar Float. Drekar is a short way to say a “dragon headed Viking longship”. At our first meeting, it was an open agenda with discussions about the type of wood to be used, the size and shape of the ship, some basic fundamentals of constructing a ship, the designs on the shields, costumes, and so on. We looked at several pictures of a number of ships that other Lodges have constructed for floats. These other Lodges will be contacted for any ideas and plans which we would be able to use. Before any construction can actually begin, the logistics of ownership, and insurance coverage must be completed for the trailer. We will then transport the trailer to our location to begin construction. Once decisions have been made to the type and amount of wood and materials that will be needed, we will list items in future newsletters. We also discussed the possibility of future fundraisers to help cover the costs. This will be an adventure for our lodge, which everyone, young and old, will be able to get involved with. And while this is all happening, each of us might discover some additional heritage of our Norwegian culture; past and present. I know that I did the other night. www.sonsofnorwaycs.com -6- Andersen specialized in the 5,000- and 10,000meter races but also competed in the 1,500. His Olympic career began inauspiciously in the 1948 Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland. He competed only in the 10,000-meter race and did not finish. But he bounced back with a string of victories. He won the World All-Around Speed-Skating Championships from 1950 through 1952 and set multiple world records. He was the first skater to complete a 10,000-meter race in under 17 minutes and improved to 16 minutes 32.6 seconds days before the start of the 1952 Olympic Games. At those Olympics, 24,000 fans cheered him on as he won the 5,000-meter race in 8:10.6, 11 seconds ahead of the Netherlands’ Kees Broekman and an Olympic record. Besides the 5,000, he won gold in the 1,500- and 10,000meter races. Andersen retired after the Olympics but returned to skating in 1954, winning the Norwegian championships for the fourth time and the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races at the European Championships. He came in sixth in the 10,000-meter race at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, and then retired from racing for good. Three Norwegian cities have statues of Andersen, and he was honored on a postage stamp in 1990. Hjalmar Johan Andersen was born on March 12, 1923, in Rødøy, Norway. His survivors include three children and a grandson, Fredrik van der Horst, a speedskater who represented Norway at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. Note from the Editor – Our very own Agnes Barilovich is the sister of Hjalmar Andersen. Our Condolences go out to Agnes and her family. facebook.com/sonsofnorwaycs ZONE 8 REPORT Spring has sprung and all is good in our Zone. The main character, Dinah Pelerin, finds herself plucked from her warm home in Hawaii, to accompany a U.S. Senator during an agricultural seed exchange. The exchange takes place at the Doomsday Seed Vault in Longyearbyen, Norway. If you are at all interested in food safety you would probably enjoy this book as it gives great insight into the seed vault and the corporate and political interests involved – even if it’s fiction it gives you a lot to think about. Jeanne Matthews did a great job describing what life is like in Longyearbyen…the arctic cold, the prolonged darkness, the town, and the hotel where most of the book takes place. In the midst of this seed exchange there is murder, a political power couple in crisis, and just enough romance for Dinah Pelerin to keep the reader interested.
