We’re going to Poulsbo!
Hurra syttende mai!
Norway Day 2012 is now just a pleasant memory. It really does take a
team to make such an event successful and between Hovedstad Lodge
and Prillar Guri Lodge we accomplished a very successful day.
Although attendance was down a little, thanks to Mother Nature giving
us such a beautiful day, we can give ourselves a big pat on the back. I
heard many favorable comments as I walked around the room. It
seems everyone really enjoyed themselves. So now, plans are
underway for Norway Day 2013.
May 19 is the day for our bus trip to Poulsbo. We will leave Olympia at
10 am and will leave Poulsbo at 4 pm. We will attend the Viking Fest,
watch the parade and enjoy a nice lunch (on our own) at the Sons of
Norway lodge or other nice restaurant in town. Shopping is optional,
but there are a number of nice little shops to visit. Seating will be
limited so get your reservations in early for a fun day. The price will be
$20 for Sons members and $25 for guests. Additional information is
located elsewhere in this newsletter.
Plans are percolating for our summer picnic. Details will be forthcoming as they become available. We always seem to have a good
time when we get together for our summer event.
Then, in September, we will begin our fall season with a nice potluck
and a good program. You will receive more information at a later date.
In the meantime I hope you all have special Syttende Mai and
wonderful summer.

Minutes of Regular Meeting – April 23, 2012
The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm by President Joanne Gray. Joanne led
the lodge in the Pledge of Allegiance, the Star Spangled Banner, the Norwegian
Anthem. Joanne then led the lodge in the table prayer I Jesu Navn and paused the
meeting for pølse med lompe (hot dogs in lefse) leftovers from Norway Day.
Joanne welcomed Randi Moe who shared Troll Stories.
Secretary - Silent roll call was taken. Alf Herigstad, Chris Brownell, and Rhys Hanson
were not present. There was a motion to approve the minutes from the last mtg
and they were approved as published. We welcomed a guest Saralyn Carruth.
Vice President – Five new members signed up at Norway Day. They were: Keith
Bare, Eric Vatshell, Steven Livingston, Robert Thoreson, and Robert Larsen. Three
folks also expressing interest in joining were Theresa Gregg, Brandy Jones, and
Carol Eccol.
Treasurer – Report given. We have awarded two scholarships.
Sunshine – Ellen did not have a sunshine report this month.
Social Director - For the May meeting we are going to the Poulsbo parade on Saturday, May 19th. We will leave at 10am from Shopko, arriving in Poulsbo at 11:30am.
We will have lunch on our own. It is Viking Fest weekend. Poulsbo Sons of Norway
is serving lunch from 11-3. The parade is at 2pm. We will leave Poulsbo at 4pm,
arriving home at 5:30pm. We have a bus to take us there. It can fit 22 people. A
sign-up sheet was sent around the meeting. It will cost $20 for members and $25
for non-members.
Our next regular meeting is the potluck in September.
Youth Director – The next Norwegian language class is scheduled to begin May 6 th
thru June 10th. Troop 2 performed the flag ceremony at our Norway Day.
Old Business – Norway Day was on April 21st. Kim Nesselquist was our guest speaker and appreciated the event. Boy Scouts Troop 2 Olympia led the flag ceremony,
which was called by our youth member Davin Brownell, who earned his Eagle rank
last week. Thank you to everyone for volunteering. Revenue is categorized as ticket
sales (~$1476, not counting pre-sales or booster buttons), food sales (~$2161), and
bake sales (~$1800). There was also advertising revenue that is still coming in.
There will be a review meeting at Top Foods Lacey on Thursday at 1pm that you
can attend if you’d like to give suggestions for improvements next year. It will be
April 20, 2013.
District Convention is May 22-26 at the La Quinta Inn in Tacoma. We have been
asked to bring 750 cookies and serve at 10am on Thursday, May 24 th. That is only
12 people making 5 dozen each!! There will be a folk art competition. It can be kids
or adults. Think about entering.
Next Saturday is the Norwegian Heritage Festival at PLU from 11-3.
More information will be sent with details and date for the summer picnic.

(Reuters) - Edvard Munch's painting "The Scream," one of the
world's most recognizable works of art, sold for $120 million at
Sotheby's setting a new record as the most expensive piece of art
ever sold at auction.
The sale at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art auction featured other works by Pablo
Picasso, Salvador Dali and Joan Miro, but Munch's vibrant piece was the centerpiece of the
auction in a salesroom packed with collectors, bidders and the media.
The vibrant pastel from 1895 was conservatively estimated to sell for about $80 million at
Sotheby's, but two determined bidders drove the final price to $107 million, or $119,922,500
including commission, during a 15-minute bidding war.
One of four versions by the Scandinavian painter, which was being sold by Norwegian businessman Petter Olsen, "The
Scream" easily eclipsed the old auction record held by Picasso's "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust," which went for $106.5
million at Christie's two years ago.
The sales room at Sotheby's erupted in applause and cheering when the hammer came down. The buyer, who won the
auction via telephone bidding, was not identified by Sotheby's.
In recent decades "The Scream," a picture of a person with hands pressed to head against a backdrop of swirling vibrant
colors, has become a ubiquitous image, appropriated for everything from coffee mugs to editorial cartoons. For many
mainstream art lovers, it is perhaps second in familiarity only to the "Mona Lisa" and is certainly among the best-known
works of art still in private hands.
Three other images of "The Scream," including two which were stolen and later recovered, are in museums in Norway.
