If you spend your time concerned about not getting it right, then most likely you won’t. Success at anything isn’t by accident, but by decision. One thing that separates those who succeed from those who fail is a decision not to give in to the fear of failure. Your thoughts are important. What you spend the most time thinking about leads you to act toward those thoughts. So, how does your thoughts relate to ASPE. Our attendance has been good, but it could be better. Our membership numbers have been staying about the same, we lose some and we gain some. The value on being a member of ASPE is what you put into it. Being an ASPE member is one of the great assets you can have for your career. When you get your membership renewal notice in the mail, please renew your membership. AYP Event Did you make it to the AYP event? If not, there will be another one coming soon that I hope you can make. Check out the latest ASPE PIPELINE for more society information. I am back from sunny Playa del Carmen, Mexico. I was down there investigating plumbing systems in foreign lands. My report: not bad. Pretty much everything is Kohler. I could have been anywhere in the US, actually, as it all looked the same. At any rate, I found the time to also take a well-deserved vacation. My wife and I had a great run, and then I came back to 17 degrees and 300 emails. It was quite a slap in the face. This month we are looking forward to our March 10 joint ASPE/ASHRAE meeting venture. Thanks to Dan Chudecke at Mulcahy for helping to arrange of our speaker, Brad Kletcher of the law firm Barna, Guzy & Steffen, Ltd. Brad is a seasoned trial lawyer and commercial litigator. He has used his experience in the court room to help business people resolve their disputes. His bona fides are extensive and can be found by clicking this hyperlink. We look forward to seeing you all there for what should be an excellent discussion. CPD Alert! Don’t forget to renew you CPD credentials prior to April 30. In order for your CPD status to remain active you must recertify no later than the date listed above. A total of 2.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are required for CPD recertification. A non-refundable recertification fee of $50 must accompany the CPD Recertification Application if you are member of ASPE; $135 for nonmembers. To complete the online recertification application and submit the recertification fee, visit aspe.org/CPD. Lastly, if you are planning on taking the CPD exam, registration closes March 12. Register here today. Looking for CEU’s for that CPD recertification? Just want to broaden your knowledge, in general? Learn about double-containment piping systems at the next ASPE webinar, March 25th. This one-hour webinar will discuss design guidelines and best practices for double containment piping systems. Topics covered include applications, material selection, system design, and leak detection methods. For more information, click this hyperlink. Another way to earn CEU credit is by taking advantage of ASPE’s CEU Provider Program. Coming this March on the 3rd is Pipe Hangers and Supports sponsored by Holdrite. This course takes you through the various field-devised methods and engineered solutions for pipe supports and restraints. Once the course is over you will be able to recognize the value and importance of disallowing field-devised methods and update plumbing specifications to include engineered solutions. I have signed up for this myself, and look forward to it. Pre-manufactured supports are products that have gained wide-acceptance both in my firm, and with the contractors we work with in the field. For more information and to register, click this hyperlink. Future webinars will include Firestop Systems (April 7) and Acoustic Isolation (May 12). Have a great March, ASPE. I know we are all looking forward to the onset of spring and more mild temperatures. ¡Hasta luego ,amigos! With over 1,000 kids walking through the event, they had to impact a few of the kids that showed up at the ASPE table. ASPE will likely participate in future STEM Career Fairs. “YOU DEFINITELY SUCCEEDED IN INSPIRING A GREAT NUMBER OF STUDENTS TO PURSUE STEM CAREERS. THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE.” PENNY ANDERSON Exposing kids early on to plumbing systems and design is just another way we invest in the future and advancement of our industry. Keep your eyes and ears open for other opportunities and let one of the board members know of potential events we can attend. Finally, check out the response from the STEM coordinator as well as the video link below. Thank you for volunteering your time to prepare and participate in the 2015 District 196 STEM Career Fair. There were over 1000 students, parents, and community members in attendance. You definitely succeeded in inspiring a great number of students to pursue STEM careers. Thank you for making a difference. Here you may access a 3 minute video of the event. We hope to see you again next year. Thank you on behalf of District 196. Penny Anderson STEM Career Fair Coordinator 4-4-1 Deal Vendors are very important to the advancement of the plumbing engineering. How are we to learn the specifics of designing a water softener or what the best criteria is in sizing the hot water heating systems if we don’t have vendors to help out. Please consider the 4-4-1 Deal. What is the 4-4-1 you ask? Invite 4 people and pay for their meal at a technical meeting and get 1 table for displaying your product. 1. The 5 lunch tickets can only be used for that month’s technical meeting. 2. Regular lunch rates apply, so 4 lunches equal $100. 3. 8 foot tables will be available on a first come first serve basis. The 4-4-1 request must be submitted to Manny Manzano www.aspe.org/Minnesota Link to Page 1 Page 9 Phone: 612-673-6927 E-mail: mmanzano@michaudcooley.com www.aspe.org The TAP—ASPE Minnesota Chapter Newsletter www.aspe.org/Minnesota Link to Page 1 Page 10 www.aspe.org The TAP—ASPE Minnesota Chapter Newsletter Vice President Membership Report, Peter Dzubay Greetings! It is said that if you don't like the weather in Minnesota - "stick around, it'll change in five minutes". That certainly has been the case this winter especially relating to temperature swings, -20F one day and 25F above the next, then -14F and so on - one heck (as we say up here) of a roller coaster ride. But spring is on the horizon - it has to be since I see that the are putting the patio furniture on display at the home stores. (When will we get to use it?) First on the agenda for this month is taking a moment to extend greetings and a warm welcome to our newest member: John Pritchard. Be sure to introduce yourself to John at the next TAPRoom meeting. Smith, FASPE, as the Society’s new Executive Director/CEO. Smith joined the ASPE staff last year as the Society’s Senior Director of Technical and Regulatory Affairs, serving as the Society’s main liaison with the plumbing industry’s code writing and standards developing organizations. In his new role, Smith will be responsible for the administration, management, and financial operations of the Society, as well as implementing the policies and procedures established by the ASPE Board of Directors. He will provide professional administrative and management support and financial expertise to ASPE’s local Chapters and for all Society activities and programs. In addition, Smith will continue to represent the interests of ASPE and the plumbing engineering community in code and standards activities as well as serve as a technical resource for the ASPE staff and membership. He will continue to build and maintain relationships with other industry organizations to ensure that the public’s heath and safety are kept at the forefront of legislation and regulations regarding plumbing system design, installation, inspection, and maintenance. Smith joined ASPE in 1993 as an Affiliate Member and is currently a Full Member of the Society. He assumed a leadership role in 2002 when he was appointed to the ASPE Board of Directors as Society Affiliate Liaison, and during his tenure the position evolved into Vice President, Affiliate. John Page 19 www.aspe.org The TAP—ASPE Minnesota Chapter Newsletter Vice President Legislative Report, Craig Johnson MN Plumbing Code Corner The ongoing news in Minnesota is that a new plumbing code is on the horizon. The process of abandoning the home grown MN Plumbing Code and adopting a completely new code has not been easy and has not been without controversy. Neverthe less, a completely new code is on its way. The process is long and complicated and is governed by very specific Minnesota rulemaking requirements. The MN Plumbing Board approved the adoption of the 2012 Uniform Plumbing Code, with amendments of course. Currently the Plumbing Board is finalizing the language of the new code which is expected to be completed by the Board at a special September meeting. The first, and probably only public review period should occur sometime after January 1, 2015. At that time we all have the opportunity to review the proposed amendments and offer our comments.
