(WAGNER) The Chancel Choir Come, let us sing and make a joyful noise to God! Come let us sing! CALL to WORSHIP Alexander Vincent One: I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; All: with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. One: I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; All: your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. One: You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David: ‘I will establish your descendants forever, and build your throne for all generations.’” All: Praise the Lord! *HYMN 430 —Come Sing, O Church in Joy! DARWALL’S 148TH *PRAYER of CONFESSION—Unison Alexander Vincent Lord, you are a God who keeps promises. In our prayers and songs we say that we want to be Christians, but then we forget our promises. Our actions do not match up with our words. We say mean things to other people, we hurt their feelings, we think of ourselves first, and, worst of all, we ignore you. Lord, forgive us and hear our prayer for Jesus’ sake. Amen *SILENT PRAYERS of CONFESSION Here each worshiper may offer silent prayers of confession. *RESPONSE HYMN 304—Jesus Loves Me (JESUS LOVES ME) The Congregation *ASSURANCE of FORGIVENESS Lizzie Stoner One: Hear the good news! The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. 3 All: May the God of mercy, who forgives us all our sins, strengthen us in all goodness and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen. *RESPONSE to GOD’S PARDON 567—Glory Be to the Father GLORIA PATRI *THE PEACE One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. One: Let us greet one another with the peace of Christ. Max Dous As a sign of their reconciliation in Christ, the people share the peace of Christ, greeting one another with these or similar words: “The peace of Christ be with you,” “Peace be with you,” or simply, “Peace.” L I T U R GY of the W OR D PRAYER for ILLUMINATION Catherine Vincent OLD TESTAMENT READING—Deuteronomy 6: 4–9 (Old Testament, page 157) One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. ANTHEM—The Lost Boy (KEMP) Caroline Stover The Agape and Cherub Choirs Jesus, where are you? The night will soon be here. Jesus, please answer! How could you disappear? Oh, have you seen our Jesus? Did he walk with you? This is the end of the caravan. We're frightened! What can we do? No, we haven't seen him, not anytime today. No, we haven't seen your boy; could he have lost his way? We must hurry back to Jerusalem, though its many miles from here. He may be lost, he may be harmed! Our hearts are heavy with fear! Oh, have you seen our Jesus a boy about this tall? We have called and searched and prayed - did he pass by this market stall? Mary, dear Mary, there's one more place one more -The temple, the temple! Why didn't we go there before? That's where Jesus loved to go; that's where he might be. Lets hurry to the temple now! Come quickly, come with me! Yes! There he is! Thanks be to God! He's talking with teachers - let's hurry! With hearts full of joy, they ran to their boy. They hugged him with tears overflowing. Why were you worried? Why were you weeping? Did you not know that I would be here, here in my Father's house, to the temple's glory, to tell of God's love story? Did you not know that I would be here, here in my Father's house, here in my Father's house? TIME for YOUNG DISCIPLES —Presentation of Bibles EPISTLE READING—2 Timothy 1: 1–14 (New Testament, page 199) One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. SERMON From Generation to Generation *HYMN 525 —Here I Am, Lord Sydney Flook Pastor Heffernan HERE I AM, LORD 4 *AFFIRMATION of FAITH (APOSTLES’ CREED, ECUMENICAL VERSION) Avery Gardner I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
