11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Celebrating 5 Years of Building
Community Together
As we celebrate our 5th Anniversary of building
community together, we ask you, Lord, to open
our hearts so that we may be your face to those
around us….. a face of love and willingness to
serve others.
We value the legacy of the past.
We live our faith in the present.
We ask you, Creator God, to move us into the
future so that with the help of your Spirit, your
compassion and understanding
may shine through us and be visible
in our actions towards those most in need of our
help.
We ask this through the intercession of
St. Joseph and Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Amen

We Walk One
We gather here to celebrate our faith
Faces have changed, places remain
Come pray with us, come sing with us
Our hearts are filled with love and care
We walk one, we celebrate diversity
We walk one; each single gift
builds our unity
We walk one, we cannot walk alone
So we, walk one

In the Parish
Thank You
A huge Thank You to everyone on the Anniversary
Celebration Committee and all the volunteers! You
all have worked hard to create a beautiful
celebration for our church and parish and it is
greatly appreciated. Thank you to everyone who
took part in the variety show Friday night and to
everyone who attended all the festivities.
A wonderful time was had by all.
Steubenville
If there are any students in Level’s 8 & 9 interested
in attending Steubenville please contact the office.
Holy Cross Cemetery
I would to welcome Henk van Heuveln as
co-chair to the Holy Cross Cemetery Committee.
We would like to inform everyone of the price
changes for 2015:
Plots 300.00
(this secures a plot in the cemetery but not
a specific location)
Burial Fees (txs included)
Cremation 125.00
Full Burial 550.00
Due to safety concerns there will be no burials in
Holy Cross Cemetery in the winter season, normally
01 Dec through 01 Apr (unless snow covered).
Special Collection - Winter Cost Recovery
We are having a Winter Cost Recovery Collection.
This is necessary because of the numerous storms
during the winter season which resulted in
Sunday collections at Mass being lower than usual.
If you are interested in donating there are
envelopes available on the counter in the foyer.
Thank you for your support.
Magis Award
On Sat. Oct. 31 the Sisters of Charity of Halifax will
receive the Magis Award from the Jesuit Centre of
Spirituality. This is an early announcement for the
friends of the Jesuit Centre to give you a chance to
reserve places at the luncheon. The year of
consecrated life is the best time to recognize this
community for its immense contribution. Since the
mid 1800’s they have helped to shape and
energize the life of the Church in Halifax and in
other places where they serve. The event will
begin with Mass at St. Patrick’s at 10:30am
followed by a luncheon at the Delta Halifax at
noon. For information or tickets ($50) call 902429-7344 or email registrar@jesuitspirit.ca

Scent FREE
We are trying to make our environment here at the
Church and for any events in the hall completely
scent free. We have some people who have extreme
allergies to scents. One person in particular who
asked to have her name mentioned is Lorraine
Power. Strong scents can trigger her to have
seizures. Please pass this message on to anyone you
know who goes to our church but might have missed
mass. This is a serious health issue for Lorraine and
also an issue for those who have allergies, we
appreciate everyone’s cooperation. Thank You.

PAR - We encourage you to use Pre-Authorized
Payment. Basically you set up at the office a
specific amount to be taken out of your account on
the 10th of every month. This is your contribution
for that month. This is an easy way to make sure
the parish gets your contribution each week. This
only works for regular Sunday collections not
second collections.
Reflections, Witness
Personal Profile of Lorraine Power
Hi, my name is Lorraine Power.
I was born in 1951 in Cape Breton. My birth family
was from Cape Breton – my father was a Mic Mac chief
and my mother was French. My grandfather was also
a Mic Mac chief who drummed and sang. My father’s
mother, my grandmother, was a medicine woman.
When I was young, I also drummed and sang.
My mom, Mabel Power adopted me into her family in
1960, when I was nine years old, after living in several
foster homes before that.
After I came to live with Mom, when I was nine, I
helped in St. Joseph’s church by cleaning the church
with Mom and Aunt Irma. At fourteen years old I
became the first altar girl and it will be 50 years on
August 3rd of this year that I have been a server and a
sacristan. I love doing this for God and hope to stay
as long as I can. I enjoy talking to people as they come
to Mass and I enjoy Helping Father Tadek at Mass all
the time.
“Lorraine is that special kind of volunteer. Like the
Christian who prays in her closet, or the woman who
secretly gives alms. Lorraine always gives a helping
hand without asking for praise, without even expecting
acknowledgement. She simply does it. That’s her
nature.”
“Some people improve the lives of everyone with
whom they come in contact. They have that special
sort of thing. Lorraine is such a person – with her,
walking miles in a snowstorm, spending hours with
young people are not sacrifices. That is her nature.
She derives special pleasure in helping others: that is
an inseparable part of her make-up. She simply helps
others quickly and quietly. She asks for nothing in
return, nor does she want anything. Those who have
met her know that when she reaches the Gates of
Heaven, they will open quickly and quietly; just as she
has always served her fellow human beings.”
St. Peter said “Upon this rock I will build my Church”
I will say “Upon this Church I will build my Faith”
Lorraine Power.
Now in her mid –sixties, Lorraine is as active and
committed to helping as she was in her youth –
whether it be shoveling snow, painting the church,
serving on the altar, or welcoming and orienting
visiting priests or new pastors. In 1990, in
recognition of her ministry in the parish, Lorraine was
awarded the Diocesan Medal of Merit.
In describing Lorraine, the following quotes are taken
from a column in the Catholic Companion, written by
Jim Power, Lorraine’s brother:
