Blood Drive How do you show your love for God? I think we would all say that we love God, but how does your life demonstrate that love? Just as in human relationships, love is shown in a number of ways. Usually, the greater our love for someone, the more ways we use. One of the ways is by talking with that person, telling them we love them and sharing our lives with them. With God we call this prayer. Real prayer is not words said by rote, or simply asking God for something. It is a two-way conversation in which we give thanks, confess our failings, ask for help, praise God for who He is, and also listen for God to speak with us. How much time each day do we take to really converse with God? Another way to show love is by doing something to please the other person. What can we do to please God? We can use our lives to serve Him, using the gifts we’ve been given to build up the kingdom and bring glory to His name. Jesus Himself said, “If you love me you will obey my commandments.” God has always asked His people for obedience. He has told us what to obey in the Bible. Above all, the most important commands are to love God and to love our neighbor. How well do our lives show our obedience in love. We often give gifts to the people we love. The same is also true in our relationship with God. These gifts can be of our time, or of our abilities, but God also asks that we return a portion of our material resources to Him to be used to support the work of His kingdom. In the Old Covenant it was ten percent. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 16:2, “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.” What does our giving say about how much we love God? Finally, when we love someone we want to spend time with them. This is necessary to maintain and strengthen any relationship. We show our love for God by spending time in His presence, which often entails spending time with God’s people in worship. We were created to worship God, but if we do not worship Him we will find someone or something else to worship. David said, “I rejoiced with those who said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” (Psalm 122:1). Let us remember John’s words: “If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.” (1 John 4:20–21). Do we show that we love God by meeting together regularly with God’s people? This summer may we all grow in our love for God and in the ways we express that love. It is over two years now that I walked into Phenix Baptist and more importantly two years next month when I welcomed Our Lord into my life as an adult. I don’t know if any of you have ever heard the small voice of God. I am pretty sure I did one cold march day two years ago. I had been searching and asking God what he wanted to do with me now that I have accepted Him into my Life. Of course there were no lightning bolts or loud claps of thunder and it did take some time for Him to tell me what he wanted. What He did tell me was to take my Bible and go for a walk and just read his word. Well! I ended up opening it up to Acts and the more I read the more I had to read. Then something strangely wonderful happened. I was physically overcome with emotion and couldn’t stop crying. Paul’s words had touched me so deeply, and had such a deep impact on me spiritually. All of a sudden the message was clear. Jim go out and preach my word to the gentiles. Well of course I haven’t done any preaching and only one mission trip, but I have come to realize that maybe, just maybe, my mission is here with Phenix Baptist and that He wants to put my energy and time to help our church become more vital and stronger. I am always open to what He wants me to do, and if a He calls me to go somewhere, I know He will provide the means for that to happen. Acts 9:15-16 15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: 16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake. The peace of Our Lord be with you. Initially, a single banner proclaimed National Forgiveness Day in downtown Victoria, British Columbia. Over time, more and more people began to identify with their personal need to forgive and be forgiven. We thought this past winter was over but it left us a couple of reminders for just how bad it was. But, thank God, all can be repaired. I recently met with our Insurance Adjuster concerning water stains in the secretary’s ceiling over the window and over the door in the fellowship hall. These two areas need to be opened up and an estimate for the repairs submitted. The front roof over the offices has damage to some of the shingles. The adjuster suggested we have that area all replaced. I will be meeting with the roofing company for their assessment and estimate for those repairs. Mike and I contacted our insurance company for a water leak from the ice we had in our back room. The adjuster drove from Louisiana to RI because there were not enough adjusters locally to handle all the claims. Boston, where my daughter lives, hired a company in Colorado to remove snow from roofs. Yes, it was officially one of our bigger and “badder” winters. We are planning a church clean-up, inside and out, a date to be announced. It is our responsibility to keep God’s house in order and I think we do a pretty good job. Thank you all for how you care for our building. We can be especially happy for how we respect each other as we meet to worship our Lord. Have a wonderful summer. Looking forward to working at Vacation Bible School July 20th. God Bless. Cheryl Movie Night will be Saturday, August 29th at 6:30pm We can finish the trilogy started long ago by watching Night at the Museum III, or if people prefer, we can continue to watch those shows we older folk saw and loved that our youth may not have seen yet. The list of “50 Best Kids Movies to Watch as a Family” includes Bambi, Old Yeller, ET, The Jungle Book, etc. There will be a sheet for people to cast their votes on in the Narthex. If no one votes, we’ll go with Museum III. 4 July 2015 Sun Mon Tue 5 9:00 Prayer Time 9:30 Worship 6 4:00—7:00 PM BLOOD DRIVE 12 9:00 Prayer Time 9:30 Worship 13 6:30 Christian Ed 19 9:00 Prayer Time 9:30 Worship 20 Thu Fri Sat 1 2 3 INDEPENDENCE DAY OBSERVED Church Office Closed 4 10 11 8 9 INDEPENDENCE DAY Girl Scouts 14 15 16 17 18 Girl Scouts BUILDER DEADLINE 26 9:00 Prayer Time 9:30 Worship 12:30 FREE Lunch Distribution 7 Wed 27 21 22 23 VBS 2015—9:00 A.M.
