A Note from Father Tom - Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Roman
SACRED HEART ST FRANCIS DE SALES A Note from Father Tom On April 25, 1987 I and six other Holy Cross Deacons were graced with the Gift of the Sacrament of Ordination at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. It is hard to believe that 28 years have passed since that day!! I speak about this because each year as the anniversary approaches, I reflect on the profound sense of gratitude that I feel about this great gift that God has given to me, and on the equally strong desire that I have to witness to others about this life. The simple witness that I wish to share is that I can honestly say that each day of the past 28 years has been incredibly Grace-filled, joyful, rich beyond imagining, and tremendously fulfilling. Life always has challenges, of course, but I can honestly testify to the truth that there has not ever been a day when I have felt any regret. On quite the contrary, each and every day I am filled with thankfulness for the richness of the life and vocation that God has given to me. And since I am aware that there are not likely to be too many “young eyes” reading these words, I call on all the parents and grandparents in the congregation to foster and encourage a religious vocation in your children. After all, it is the fertile ground of a loving family where any true vocation (to married life, religious life or ordained life) is going to be found. Teaching, or “catechesis,” and mission, or “evangelization,” are distinct but related tasks in the church. Catechesis is basically religious education. Rooted in the Greek word for “echo,” it involves learning the “faith facts” that enable us to speak meaningfully about what we believe. But catechesis is not only about transferring information from one generation of the church to the next. We need to echo the faith of our mothers and fathers in a spirit that is awakened, nourished, and developed. Catechesis is a lifelong process that seeks to deepen the echo of faith so that it reverberates through every corridor of our lives, relationships, and decision-making. Catechesis, though, can’t go anywhere without the work of evangelization. This word also has Greek origins and means “proclaiming good news.” We can think of evangelization as creating the spark that ignites the fire and catechesis as the work of tending the flame once it’s established. When they work hand in hand, evangelization and catechesis can make saints out of us, bringing us to faith and then to holiness. –Alice L. Camille “I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.” - Jn 10:16-17 Readings for the Week of April 26, 2015 Sunday: Acts 4:8-12/1 Jn 3:1-2/Jn 10:11-18 Monday: Acts 11:1-18/Jn 10:1-10 Tuesday: Acts 11:19-26/Jn 10:22-30 Wednesday: Acts 12:24--13:5a/Jn 12:44-50 Thursday: Acts 13:13-25/Jn 13:16-20 Friday: Acts 13:26-33/Jn 14:1-6 Saturday: Acts 13:44-52/Jn 14:7-14 Next Sunday: Acts 9:26-31/1 Jn 3:18-24/Jn 15:1-8 ©Liturgical Publications Inc 1 BENNINGTON, VT “Growing In Faith Together” The School of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Faith Formation Office Hours: 307 School Street ~ Bennington, VT 05201 Life Long Faith Formation Program Monday – 8:30 am – 1:30 pm and 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – 8:30 am – 1:30 pm Friday – Closed Mr. David Estes, Principal 442-2446, Ext. 3 Providing excellence in academics and a deepening faith in God and Gospel Values in an environment that is caring, challenging, and respectful, striving to develop in every student the habits of thinking critically and acting responsibly in daily life.
