ISSUE 2 JULY 2016
FOREWORD BY ALLAN SHINE
CEO – North Kildare Chamber
“ Welcome to the latest edition of The Chamber
Chronicle. The first 6 months of 2016 has seen a
huge increase in business sentiment. Kildare is well
positioned going forward with plenty to be optimistic
about. The Chamber continues to grow in terms
of membership and the services that we provide to
businesses throughout the county”.
Our office is extremely busy as we look forward
to the second half of the year. Our iHub is fully
occupied and we have seen a huge increase
in footfall in our office over the past 6 months as
businesses continue to engage with the Chamber.
Representation is key to our members. We are
represented on all Strategic Policy Committee’s
in Kildare County Council, Action Plan for Jobs
for the Mid-East region and various boards within
Maynooth University and the Kildare Wicklow
Education Board.
FDI is crucial to Kildare. Our county is the home of
some of the biggest names in global business that
include Intel, Hewlett-Packard and Pfizer while the
Kerry Group recently opened its Global Innovation
and Technology Park here.
Kildare is sometimes dubbed ‘the Silicon Valley of
Europe’ with many giants of the technological world,
opting to settle in the county – not least because of
the large pool of educated people available. Ireland’s
fastest growing University at Maynooth provides a
ready source of young talent with extensive research
activities for industry and academic co-operation.
In September we will welcome the President of
Maynooth University Professor Philip Nolan to
address our members at our Corporate Partners
Luncheon.
North Kildare Chamber – In Business for Business
Kildare is an ideal hub for organisations seeking a
European base. The brightest talent from across
Europe is attracted here, mixing with our own to
offer a multinational and multilingual melting pot of
skills with a positive attitude to match.
The Chamber’s ongoing commitment remains
focused on supporting the diverse interests of
its members throughout the county, from sole
traders to SME sector to our Multinationals at
local, regional, national and global platforms by
providing appropriate support, training, advice and
networking.
Supporting our SME sector is critical and we will
continue to lobby extensively on areas of concern
for our members. Our Pre Budget Submission will
be launched in September and we ask our members
to engage with the office in formulating key policy
items.
Finally, after the great success of the recent
Punchestown Festival and The Irish Open held in
the K Club we look forward to welcoming John
Concanon, Director of Ireland 2016 and one of
Irelands foremost marketing and tourism guru’s for
our Annual Tourism and Hospitality Breakfast later
in the year. Our Hospitality and Tourism offering in
the county is excellent and John will be looking at
new ways in which Kildare can promote itself both
locally, nationally and internationally.

Colm McLoughlin began by transporting the room from 1983 Dubai – a
lone motorway travelling through vast desert space – to 2016 Dubai - the
metropolitan, dynamic business hub of the Middle East.
Colm engaged and enthralled the room with the success that is Dubai Duty Free,
the business he has been involved in for the past 33 years. In his first year at the
helm turnover was US$3million, today its turnover is in excess of US$1.9billion in what is
now the largest retail operation of its kind in the world. employing over 6000 people from
47 different nationalities. The 2022 vision of Dubai Duty Free is to employ 10,000 people
in 80,000 square meters of retail space with a turnover of US$3billion. Colm attributes the
success of the Dubai Duty Free to positive Government attitude along with a “willingness
to work”.

re-elected as President for a second term
The Chamber’s AGM was held on the 21st of June with Vivian
Cummins elected for a second term in office. In his address
to members Vivian said “I am delighted to be elected for a
second term as President of North Kildare Chamber, and
especially at such an exciting time for businesses and the
wider community in Kildare.
While there are challenges facing business in the years ahead,
there are also huge opportunities, and a hunger among
people for positive change to happen and for progress to

COLOURTREND REBRAND
Premium Irish-owned paint brand Colourtrend has unveiled a new €3
million rebrand. The investment is one of the largest in rebranding
by an Irish-owned private family business, fronted by internationally
famous Irish actress and director Fiona Shaw. The rebrand positions the
company for major growth as an Irish premium paint in a marketplace
dominated by multinational, impersonal paint brands.
Colourtrend’s Kevin O’Connor and Liam Holland are joined by actress Fiona Shaw and graphic designer Annie Atkins.
Colourtrend adds a new tagline to its brand, “Infinite

In recent years Colourtrend has been in a major
growth phase and is the fastest growing paint brand
in Ireland. Staff numbers have grown to over 80 with
all manufacturing, research and development done in
Celbridge, Co Kildare. The company only sells its paint
through independent stockists and does not allow it to
be sold in mass market DIY chains to differentiate its
brand as the only 100% Irish paint.
The major rebrand has been a huge team effort
says Colourtrend’s Sales and Marketing Director
Liam Holland. “It’s a big move for us and obviously

AWARD NOMINEES & WINNERS
Our members are winners
It’s not only the North Kildare Chamber who thinks our members are phenomenal. Many of our members have
been nominated for and are winners of awards over the last few months.
Irish Dog Foods a finalist in prestigious European awards programme.
Naas-based Irish Dog Foods, part of the Queally Group, represented Ireland in the Import/Export category of
the European Business Awards (EBA) at a gala ceremony held in Milan on 18th June.
Irish Dog Foods was one of just nine Irish companies to make it to the final stage of the prestigious business
awards programme. 110 businesses across Europe qualified for the finals, whittled down from 32,000 entries.
Earlier this year, Irish Dog Foods was awarded the Ruban d’Honneur by the EBA following a strict judging
process which assessed its performance in terms of ethics, innovation and financial success. The awarding
of the Ruban signalled Irish Dog Foods’ qualification for the final stage of the awards programme. There was
a public vote element to the competition as well as face-to-face judging. Irish Dog Foods was also required to
submit video and written supports to their entry.
Liam Queally, MD of Irish Dog Foods travelled to Milan for
the awards ceremony. An international mind-set is one of
the criteria the judges look for among the winners and this
is something Irish Dog Foods has in abundance. The Queally
Group employs 6,000 globally and exports 85% of its
production to over 45 countries. The pet food manufacturer
is firmly rooted in Ireland, however, with major manufacturing
plants in Naas and Kilkenny.
The European Business Awards, now in their 10th year, aim to
support the development of a stronger and more successful
business community throughout Europe.

Summer Business Expo 2016
More than 80 local businesses exhibited at the event on Thursday, May 12th, which was hosted in Sheehy
Motors and Audi Naas in their showroom complex on the Newbridge Road.
Some 1,700 people visited the Expo, estimated Allan Shine, CEO of North Kildare Chamber. The expo now
in its third year was a hive of activity with rugby star Dave Kearney and Food Blogger Rosanna Davison both
in attendance.
“What was particularly interesting was that the sense of energy and positivity was so evident. The expo is
one of the highlights of the year for our membership. It gives the exhibitors the opportunity to showcase their
produces and offerings to businesses and the public. We want to do everything we can to promote business
in Kildare. Events such as this expo can only be of benefit to business.”

WHITEWATER SHOPPING CENTRE CELEBRATES
10 YEARS IN BUSINESS
With the Curragh plains to the south-west and the River Liffey
to the East, Whitewater Shopping Centre enjoys a unique
location at heart of the thoroughbred county. As it celebrates
its 10 year anniversary this year, the fully-let, 370,000 sq. ft.
scheme has become fondly known by locals as “the Dundrum
outside Dublin” and attracts over 5 million shoppers each year,
since opening its doors in 2006.
Marking the 10 year anniversary, Whitewater organised 10 days of “Let’s Celebrate” spectacular entertainment.
An exciting mix of fashion shows, music, promotions, giveaways, free family entertainment, afternoon music
recitals, dance performances, celebrity appearances, live DJ’s. On the ultimate day of celebrations, The
Newbridge Patrician Primary School Band, led the parade from the Patrician Boys School and all the way into
the centre. Magical tea-party themed characters moved throughout the centre. The entertainment line-up also
included carnival-style samba dancers and musicians. Under exploding confetti guns and balloon drops, the
official Whitewater birthday cake was cut and offered to customers, ending the 10th birthday celebrations on
a sweet note.
“We wanted to mark our 10th anniversary in style and most of all, to include, thank & give something back
to all our loyal customers ... From day-one, we have received great support from the local community and
beyond and we are delighted they could join us and enjoy the festivities marking this significant milestone. We
will be continuing our celebrations with a number of exciting events we are planning over the coming months

PURPLE FLAG UPDATE FOR MAYNOOTH TOWN
North Kildare Chamber is pleased to announce that our year long project in partnership with Kildare County
Council to seek accreditation for Purple Flag for Maynooth town is in full swing. In April, the working group
visited Limerick for a ‘Firm Foundations’ workshop to help us take our first steps in developing a strong
Purple Flag Entry. More recently the Chamber and their working group visited Waterford for a ‘Best Practice
Self-Assessment’ workshop as a valuable way of gaining an insight into a town centre that has been
awarded Purple Flag ahead of our own self-assessment taking place on Thursday the 7th of July.
Jennifer Forster, Membership and Events Manager of the Chamber said: “The awarding of the Purple Flag
to Maynooth will further secure its footing as a town looking to the future, thinking innovatively and working
together to ensure it will be a strong, energetic, entertaining and adaptable town going forward. We are
looking forward to submitting a very strong application and working with all key stakeholders in Maynooth.
Through effective collaboration, I am sure Maynooth will be the first town in Kildare to be awarded the
Purple Flag.”

IN THE HOTSEAT
Allan Shine, CEO of North Kildare Chamber recently caught up with both Gordon
Geraghty, Group Marketing Manager and Frank Kelly, Dealer Principal of Sheehy Motors
Group. An amazing success story for Kildare, Sheehy Motors are celebrating 15 years
in business in Naas this year.
Upon entering the showrooms, one notices straight away that the economy is on the
way back as the showrooms are gleaming, awash with new cars awaiting delivery to
their proud new owners.
Gordon has been with the group since 2009 and you can straight away get a sense of
pride when he talks about Sheehys and the motor industry in general. It’s an industry
that has seen a 28% increase in car sales this year to date. Gordon explained that there
are currently over 70 employees working for Sheehy Motors Naas. Over 50 of the staff
are living in county Kildare. The company has a turnover of €70 million and is a major
contributor to the local economy.
His office is littered with awards. The group recently won the coveted Škoda ‘Dealer of
the Year’ award, Škoda Aftersales Team of the Year and one that he particularly proud
of - Škoda Marketing Person of the Year.
Frank Kelly, Dealer Principal told me that the PCP (Personal Contract Plan) is proving
very popular with customers. This allows customers to tailor a 3 year finance plan to suit
their own needs. PCP now accounts for over 40% of car sales in Sheehys. Frank spoke
about the group’s very proud staff retention and continued employment in the county.
CSR is another area where Sheehys excel. They continue to give back and are involved
in an array of community projects across Kildare.
With the July registration season upon us, Frank said that the second half of 2016 is
looking very good for Sheehy’s. This was evident by the fact that his Audi and Volkswagen
showrooms were full of potential customers as I left the building.
