+ Affirmation of Faith adapted from âOur Song of Hope,â RCA Leader
adapted from “Our Song of Hope,” RCA + Affirmation of Faith Leader: We sing in our world a sure song of hope: People: We know Christ to be our only hope. We have enmeshed our world in a realm of sin, rebelled against God, accepted inhumane oppression of humanity, and even crucified God’s son. Leader: Jesus Christ is the hope of God's world. In His death, the justice of God is established; forgiveness of sin is proclaimed. People: On the day of the resurrection, the tomb was empty; His disciples saw Him; death was defeated; new life had come. God's purpose for the world was sealed. There will be a new heaven and a new earth, and all creation will be filled with God's glory. Amen. Bring your sacrifice of praise and join the parade of celebration! People Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Opening Prayer Gracious God, you were innocent but suffered like the guilty so that we might be saved from suffering. We confess our unwillingness to suffer for others or for you. Unison God of goodness, love, and light, we gather to praise you because in Jesus Christ you have come to save us. We worship you with joy! When darkness and death pervade the world around us, grant us faith to believe and speak your gospel of life. Amen. + Processional #196 “All Glory, Laud, & Honor” Prayer of Illumination St. Theodulph Shelia Bennett, Elder (8:30) Darryl Poovey, Elder (10:30) Unison Eternal God, Speak to us by your Holy Spirit, that we might meet Christ and receive grace enough to pick up our crosses and follow him. Amen. First Reading Anthem (10:30) Mark 11:1-10 “Sing Hosanna” Cherub and Covenant Choirs Elder Let those who fear the Lord say, “His steadfast love endures forever!” The Lord has answered us and saved us. People In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God! “Gloria Patri” + Response #581 + Lighting of Peace Candle Pew Bible, page 823 Mark Patterson Litany of Confession and Forgiveness Elder Forgive us, Lord. Humble us. Nourish us. Grant us peace. Save us, we beseech you, as you alone can do. Amen. Like the people of ancient Jerusalem, we celebrate Christ today but will deny him tomorrow by our thoughts, words, and deeds. Let us confess our sins to the God who laid down his life for us, to forgive us and set us free. People Loving Lord, you rode a donkey and came in peace, humbled yourself and gave yourself for us. We confess our lack of humility and our tendency toward violence. Blessed Jesus, you challenge us to bear good fruit for you. We confess that our faith is often more show than substance, and we are more self-serving than concerned for others. Traditional, 2nd Century Congregation of the Good Shepherd, Beijing Leader Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who humbled himself and became obedient – even to death on a cross. People And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Leader May the peace of Jesus Christ be with you. People And also with you. One Great Hour of Sharing Offering Today One Great Hour of Sharing is a special offering of the Presbyterian Church (USA) that enables Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Self Development of Peoples, and the Presbyterian Hunger Program to witness to the healing love of Christ locally and globally. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance enables those affected by natural or human-caused disasters to be part of the rebuilding and recovery efforts in their communities. Self Development of People provides grants to agencies within our own presbytery that are working to build up their community. Presbyterian Hunger Program provides support to those in need of food security. When you give to One Great Hour of Sharing, you are assisting in the empowerment of others as they move past emotional, physical, and spiritual misfortune. Your help gives hope in the name of Jesus Christ. Youth Group Prayer Labyrinth Today The youth group will meet today at the church at 5 p.m., eat, and then walk together to St. John's Lutheran Church to walk their prayer labyrinth. Youth experience the ancient spiritual practice of walking the labyrinth, which is modeled on the one found in the Chartres Cathedral in France.
