CFC`s Connection - Child and Family Centre
October 6, 2014 Volume 1, Issue 3 CFC’s Connection Your Child and Family Centre Quarterly Newsletter Child and Family Centre: Lead Agency In August the Ministry of Child and Youth Services named the Child and Family Centre the lead agency for the service area of Greater Sudbury and Manitoulin. This announcement is part of the Ontario government’s ‘Moving on Mental Health’ strategy introduced in November of 2012. The Moving On Mental Health action plan will transform the experience of children and youth with mental health problems and their families. Regardless of where they live in Ontario they will know what mental health services are available in their communities and how to access them. Lead agencies will help achieve this goal by ensuring core, community-based child and youth mental health services are available in their service area, and by collaborating with other community partners, such as schools and hospitals. For more information about Moving On Mental Health we encourage you to visit The Ministry of Child and Youth Services website at http:/www.children.gov.on.ca/ This announcement marks a very exciting time here at the Child and Family Centre as we learn and grow with this new set of objectives, and we are looking forward to working collaboratively with staff, stakeholders, and community partners to ensure that our service area offers the best possible programs and services. We hope that everyone has enjoyed the first two editions and found them to be both interesting and informative. Through the summer months the Executive committee has continued to meet on behalf of the Board: conducting regular business; preparing for the Annual General Meeting (AGM); and holding preliminary discussions in response to the fantastic news received in August that we had been designated the “Lead Agency” for the Sudbury/Manitoulin service area, per the Moving on Mental Health Strategy! The priority for us as Lead Agency in the initial stages will be to engage in leadership and planning to set the stage for system transformation. The Board will continue to oversee our progress in this area and looks forward to working closely with the Ministry and our key community partners in this important endeavor. Much more to come! Our Mission Our mission and vision statements will continue to guide the decisions, practices, and principles that we, the Child and Family Centre, adopt and implement. Our AGM took place at the Marriott Suites on September 24th. Despite competition over the availability of ‘coffee’ with the new Burger King/Tim Hortons consortium who were also meeting there, our meeting went well. There was yet another great turnout of staff! Our guest speaker Kim Moran, Executive Director of Children’s Mental Health Ontario (CMHO), was both informative about the changing role for her Agency, and inspiring as she spoke from the heart about her own personal family experience. Election of Board members was also held, with the elections of new members Anna Barsanti, Robin Tiplady, and Jaymi Lee Hallows (returning). In addition, both Norah Dougan and Steven Callaghan were re-elected for an additional 3 year term. At a brief Board meeting afterwards, Megan Dumais was newly elected as VicePresident, while Barry Sullivan and Rene Quesnelle were re-elected as President and Treasurer, respectively. Thank you and congratulations to all. Well, that’s all the space we have for this edition, folks. Just a word of thanks again to Ms. Dugas, management, and staff for ensuring that our primary focus continues to be the day to day provision of top quality services for the children, youth, and families in the communities we serve. Until next time, thanks, merci beaucoup, miigwetch! Barry Sullivan, Board President CFC Welcomes the Ministry . Our Mission: To provide for a continuum of mental health services for children, youth, and their families with a focus on treatment, and to advocate for mental health, prevention and promotion. Our Vision: Healthy children, youth, and families in a responsive, culturally sensitive, and caring community. On September 25th, Honorable Tracy McCharles, Minister of Children and Youth Services, visited Child and Family Centre’s Frood site, met with board members and senior management, and shared her priorities Children's Mental Health being one of them. The Minister was impressed by CFC’s ability to service First Nations, Francophone and Anglophone clients. She was also impressed by this Agency’s commitment to the implementation of Evidence Based Practice, program evaluation, and our status as a Learning Organization. Recall times when you have experienced comfort, confidence, and other positive emotions. From the Desk of Our Executive Director Welcome to the third issue of CFC’s Connection. We are excited by the uptake from both staff and community partners of this newsletter. We are also pleased to announce that you can now subscribe via our website at childandfamilycentre.on.ca. Since our last issue, the Honorable Tracy McCharles, Minister of Children and Youth Services, announced the Lead Agencies for fourteen of its service areas. Child and Family Centre is pleased to announce its status as Lead Agency for the Districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin. The activities for the first year will focus mostly on leadership development and planning, including the development of an initial core mental health service plan and a community mental health plan. The Ministry of Child and Youth Services (MCYS) has engaged the expertise of the Ontario Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth Mental Health (OCECYMH) to support Lead Agencies in their new role. The Ministry has also provided one time funding to support activities in year one. On October 7th, 8th and 9th, MCYS and the OCECYMH will be hosting an orientation session in Toronto for all Lead Agencies where additional information will be provided on the Lead Agency’s role and expectations during the first year. We are looking forward to working collaboratively with our stakeholders and partners to achieve more positive outcomes for the children, youth and families that we serve. Meanwhile the Agency continues to realign its services to the new core services. In July, 2014 we implemented the Walk-In Service Pilot. The pilot has been extended to December 31, 2014 to assist us in gathering more information as few clients presented over the summer months. The results from that pilot will be utilized to support the full implementation of a Walk-In service to address the needs of the community. Being a learning organization we have also completed a process review with two of our intensive programs - the English stream of urban elementary Day Treatment classrooms, and the Intensive Supervision and Support Program. Both reviews have led to changes that align with best practices. We are looking forward to reviewing our Francophone Day Treatment Programs and development of a comprehensive Intensive service model. The Child and Family Centre is also implementing its Internal Communication Framework following a focus group discussion with staff in August 2014. Critical to the success of the implementation process is ensuring that we obtain ongoing feedback from staff. An electronic suggestion box has been created to facilitate this process. Staff are encouraged to share their suggestions at: CFCSuggestionBox@childandfamilycentre.on.ca In closing, I would like to share with you a quote from Henry David Thoreau: “It's not enough to be busy, so are the ants. The question is, what are we busy about?" As we embark in our busy schedules during these transforming times let us keep an open mind. You never know what could happen, until you try. Warm regards, Linda Dugas 2. Learn ways to cope with negative thoughts. They can be insistent and loud, but learn to interrupt them. 3. Practice mindfulness. When you are out for a walk or spending time with friends, turn off your cellphone and stop making that mental “to do” list. 4. Regular physical activity improves psychological wellbeing and can reduce depression and anxiety. 5. Joining a club or group can reduce loneliness, since it connects you with a set of people sharing a common goal or interest. 6. Taking up a hobby brings balance to your life by allowing you to do something you enjoy, free of the pressure of everyday tasks. 7. Set personal goals. Whatever goal you set, reaching it will build confidence and a sense of satisfaction. 8. Keep a journal, or even talk to the wall! Expressing yourself after a stressful day can help you gain perspective and release tension 9. A good night’s sleep is important to our physical and mental well-being. For children and youth, it contributes to feeling well, doing well in school, and to mood and behavior. 10. When you feel overwhelmed, take a moment. Calm yourself by focusing on your deep breathing. . The wall of recognition will be a place to celebrate the good work of our employees and partners both at the Centre and in our community. It is also a place to recognize those who have supported us in our mission and vision. Plans are being reviewed to ensure the wall is bilingual (trilingual where possible), and that the material is kept up to date. Staff are encouraged to stop by the Wall of Recognition, which can be found in Boardroom A at Frood. We welcome your ideas! Smile! Why do penguins wash their clothes in Tide? Because it’s too cold out-tide! CFC and the Ontario Centre of Excellence Earlier this month we were delighted to see Child and Family Centre representatives in the Ontario Centre of Excellence for Child and Youth’s annual report! Executive Director Linda Dugas spoke about her own positive experience with youth engagement, while program manager Melissa Anderson spoke about CFC’s learning experience with the PACE program. To view The Centre of Excellence’s for Child and Youth Mental Health’s annual report, please visit: www.excellenceforchildandyouth.ca/ who-we-are/corporate-documents/ annual-report 4 CFC in the Community: Dinner with NISA On June 27 2014, CFC’s Linda Dugas and Sue Tasse attended a dinner hosted by the Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA) featuring guest speaker Clara Hughes. NISA is an organization run by and for consumers of mental health services. They develop occupational skills, nurture self-confidence and provide resources for recovery. Canada’s six-time cycling and speedskating Olympic medalist Clara Hughes completed a national bicycle tour across Canada supporting local mental health initiatives. Sponsored by Bell Canada’s “Let’s Talk”, Clara’s Big Ride visited every province and territory in Canada to grow awareness and action in mental health and help end the stigma around mental illness. Sudbury was one of ninety-five lucky communities to receive a visit from Clara Hughes on her 110-day tour. The dinner, a touch of East Indian flavors, was well attended. About the event, Mrs. Dugas says “The dinner was excellent, but more importantly, Clara’s address was moving and important.” Mrs. Tasse adds, “It’s great to have such a dedicated advocate working to end the stigma around mental health.” The Child and Family Centre would like to recognize NISA, Clara Hughes, and Bell Canada for their excellent work in the promotion of mental health, not only in our community, but in communities nationwide. CFC was thrilled to be a part of such an important day, and we will continue to advocate for suicide prevention in our community. Thank you for including us. YOUth Matter! a word from Rod Bazinet Although August presented us a challenge for our outdoor event at bell park by raining out our concert “Rock for Youth” [in celebration of International Youth Day], it did nothing to dampen our spirits in moving our youth engagement initiatives forward. We have taken a bold step in engaging youth from the community who are eager to collaborate with us in fulfilling our Dare to Dream youth activities, and our meeting on September 25th at CFC served to energize youth initiatives here at CFC. The Walk-In serves as a mechanism for easy and quick access to mental health services for children, youth and their families. The service offers single sessions using a Solution Focused Brief Therapy model. It is NOT a crisis service. Article Debriefs a.k.a “Huddles” occur the morning following the day of the Walk-In Service, to inform the pilot process and to implement quick and easy change as we strive for continuous improvements. As a result of an implementation evaluation of the pilot, the Walk-In Service will now be Thursday from 12:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Inner-City Frood site until December 2014. Following a review of the second pilot any further changes will be communicated for the New Year 2015. Many have returned to their usual routines, and with the kids going to school, that can mean they’re bringing home germs and viruses. To reduce the number of sick days taken by employees, as well as to promote the well-being of our employees, here are some good health habits: 1. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. 2. If possible, stay home work when you are sick. 3. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. 4. Wash your hands often to help protect you from germs. Frequent hand-washing reduces the chances that you'll transfer to your mouth or nose germs you've picked up from doorknobs, telephones, or anything else touched by others 5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. 6. Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects, and things you frequently touch. Examples include your keyboard, cell phone, tablets, and TV remotes, as well as surfaces such as counter-tops, light switches and door handles. Healthy habits can protect everyone from spreading germs at home, work, or school. Health and Safety First Aid & CPR training was held at our Frood location on October 1st and 2nd. Nine employees attended this training. First Aid and CPR training skills and knowledge are applicable to not only our work lives, but also each individual’s daily life. The A Place for PACE training provided the information “SFBT develops solutions by first eliciting a description of what will be different when the problem is resolved. The therapist and the client then work backward to accomplish this by carefully and thoroughly searching through the client’s real-life experiences to identify times where portions of the desired solution descriptions already exist or could potentially exist in the future. This leads to a model of therapy that spends very little or even no time on the origins or nature of the problem, the client’s pathology, or analysis of dysfunctional interactions….a true paradigm shift” (de Shazer et al., 2007,p.2-3) manage life’s emergencies. required to act on, prevent, and If you have any questions concerning health and safety at Child and Family Centre please contact Nicole Vaillancourt. In preparation for Module 2 training in SFBT, a brief refresher of Module 1 was developed this past summer. This Refresher is intended for review by staff who had previously completed Module 1 training in March 2012. The Refresher is now available on our shared drive under SFBT. It reviews the basic skills of SFBT that were introduced in Module 1. Staff are encouraged to review in preparation for Module 2 training that is coming our way in December. Module 2: Solution Focused Approaches to Working with Children, Youth & Their Families. Coming this fall please look for more postings from PACE at both the Lasalle and Frood office locations. Feedback is always welcome at cfc@childandfamilycentre.on.ca - Kayla Maloney 12 CFC’s Christmas Families Campaign Since 2012 the Child and Family Centre has been working with a very humble, generous and anonymous community partner (“Santa”) during the Christmas season. Mid-fall, Santa’s Little Helper invites all CFC staff to refer families who meet the Christmas Families Campaign criteria, along with a list of needs and wishes. The list is sent off to Santa’s workshop where they work tirelessly to fill all of the requests, and wrap all of the gifts. “Santa’s” generosity is remarkable! In 2012 our partnership assisted 22 children ages 3-16 for a total of 13 families; in 2013 our partnership assisted a whopping 76 children ages 9 months to 17 years for a grand total of 37 families! They have provided these children with everything from crafts, boots, books and clothing, to digital games and bicycles. While this campaign is so successful because of our wonderful partnership with Santa, a very important part of the success is due to the participation of everyone from CFC; from those who make the referrals, to the caravan of Santa’s Helpers who pick up the packages, to the staff who coordinate the pick-up with their families. We have already communicated with “Santa’s Workshop” and they are gearing up to work with us again this Christmas! Our goal is to help even more of our clients and families in need this Christmas. Yours in the spirit of giving, Hélène D. Santa’s Little Helper
