Those who came to Him never walked in darkness. Merry Christmas has come around once more. It is a season of great rejoicing for it commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. However, if we are to make the occasion complete, it must be a season of meditation also. We must remember the cause for which Jesus was born and for which He sacrificed His life, and remembering it, we must live by it ourselves for if we love Him, we must follow His Commandments. Let this day be a day of stocktaking. Let us turn within, recognize our weaknesses and try to overcome them. Let us sink down all differences and sit together in all loving devotion for our Jesus. Let us purge our souls and cleanse our hearts. May be worldly prosperity has influenced us too much or we have thought that the misfortunes have descended too quick, which may not in reality be so, for ups and downs are a normal feature of life. Stand on our belief on solid ground. Let not other’s wayward opinions deflect us from the true path we are on. Do not come to hurried conclusions, but use discrimination in all our undertakings. Stick to what is real. Each action has a reaction. As you sow, so shall you reap. Let your physical sojourn be sweetly ethical, loving, co-operative and tolerant. Without these, the great spiritual flights evade you. Be watchful. We are not perfect. There may be failures on our part and misunderstandings amongst ourselves. The former, should be met with by the motto of forgive and forget and the latter by reconciling them by mutual loving contacts. Christmas is also an opportune time for reflection. Certainly, there are many good things to be grateful notwithstanding the seemingly insurmountable challenges and obstacles which has confronted us. Let us, therefore, count our blessings instead of our misfortunes, our triumphs instead of our failures. We should look back at the past with gratitude and forward to the future with hope. It is also a time to give, forgive and renew our commitment to our loved ones which is the very essence of the celebration of Christmas. As the year comes to a close and we celebrate the holidays with our friends, families and colleagues, we can take stock of the year and review our accomplishments, express our appreciation for the support we¹ve received and recognized the challenges ahead. At this special time of year, we give thanks for Christ’s message of love and mercy, and we are reminded of our responsibility to serve. Our country is blessed to have hardworking citizens who reach out with a compassionate hand to help their families, relatives and friends in need. I stand proud and salute our millions of OFWs around the world who make great sacrifices for their families for working abroad and celebrating their Christmas away from their love ones. The simple meaning of Christmas speaks to every generation and holds a sense of wonder and surprise. During this time of joy and peace, may we be surrounded by the love of family and friends and take time to reflect on the year ahead. The Friends International Magazine management and staff pray that this season will be a time of happiness in every home and we wish you all a day of glad tidings and time of peace for our country and throughout the world. Pascual Paglisan and enthusiasm. Jesus The Living God Church (JLG) is a living testimony of a church that has morphed into a vibrant group of believers who have gone through a new concept of training for spiritual maturity which is necessary for dealing with the realities of life towards genuine transformation. God has given them a positive view of what a healthy church should be, a church where love, acceptance and forgiveness must be the prominent traits. Yet, a church that knows how to discern and overcome darkness with light, overruling the works of the enemy so that they can move in the greater glory of God. JLG is God’s dear ministry with a sound doctrine and ably lead by leaders whom God has matured in the battlefields of life and ministry. Indeed, they have a poignant history but they do not dwell on the past nor engross theirselves with bad memories. They move on with victories on their side, conquer, refreshed and strengthened by His power and love for the God whom they serve has promised them a great harvest of people and nations for His greater glory. Indeed, the goodness and greatness of God was proven during the glorious thanksgiving and anniversary celebration of Jesus The Living God International Ministry held last November 13, 2011 at Luen Wai Building, Des Voeux Road West, Hongkong with the theme from the Book of Jeremiah 32:40-42 “God’s covenant is the key of His fullness of blessings.” On that precious moment and blessed day, the JLG Church marks its 8th anniversary celebration since it was founded and organized last Oct. 2003, started with only 12 members. Yet, as JLG family reminisced the past prior to the birth of the church, it was not an easy journey, the struggles, the trials, criticisms, severe trials and persecutions that caused pain and disappointment to many. But, through it all, God’s tremendous miracles poured. His loving kindness compelled the group to go on, continue and fulfill His given mandate, to spread the word and to impart to everyone the saving grace and knowledge of the only saviour, our Lord Jesus. The fire and zeal of the Holy Spirit keeps lighting their way, inspired our hearts with constant love, the compassion of bringing the story of Jesus whom God gave as a gift, for there is no long term gift we can give to people rather than the lifelong gift of 12 salvation that leads everyone to eternity. Spreading the goodness of the Lord gives no limit to Pastor Gerry Vallo, the head Pastor of JLG, because God permits him and gave him the wisdom and integrity to reach Filipinos in other parts of the globe. Pastor Gerry expressed his profound gratitude to all JLG members, friends and visitors who joined on their memorable occasion. He commended his members for their united effort, contribution Among the special guests who attended and savored the day with their presence were Mr. Arnold Pineda, managing editor of Lahing Kayumanggi Magazine, he also rendered an inspirational song; Ms. Remely Valdez , contributor/writer of Friends Int’l Magazine and HK Life newspaper; Mr. Tan and family; and guests from Philippines headed by Pastor Bernard Bataller of Sorsogon and he testified how God miraculously worked in their travelling arrangements due to some unexpected problem his group encountered in the airport. Personal testimonies from the guest and other members of JLG awakened the heart of the audience how God moved and changed their lives. It was indeed a victorious and fruitful celebration of Jesus The Living God Church. The JLG family and all the people who took part on this blessed occasion are witnesses that with God, all things are possible not only today but everyday because He is a great God “How can I miss you, if you won’t go away”, kasabihang napakalalim at maraming ipakahulugan. Write us and we’ll get your queries answered by our knowledgable columnist. Send all correspondence to Friends International Magazine by post or email. Affidavits and Affirmations I divorced my ex-husband 2 years back and I had custody of our 2 children. The last 9 months, he failed to pay child support and my monthly allowance as previously ordered by court. I do not have much financial resources and decided to go to court without any legal representation and don’t the documents to press my ex-husband to pay his obligations. I was required to do affirmations or affidavits. I have an idea with affidavit but what about this affirmation? I do not know what to do, please help me. Lina of Lantau. We Pinoys have heard Affidavit when we were in Philippines. But in HK, Affidavit and Affirmation confuse all. In fact both serve the same purpose but the form is slightly different. The substance is basically the same. Affidavits are sworn by virtue of a belief in Higher Being, God. Whereas Affirmations are simply made by way of being affirmed as true and accurate with no religious significance. Thus in Philippines being a Christian nation, we use Affidavit over Affirmation. In Hong Kong, Affirmations are far more common in use than Affidavits. Affidavits form an important role in civil proceedings more than in criminal. Affidavits are common tools used for interlocutory proceedings. So if Lina would like to start proceedings against the ex-husband, Lina will make applications to court using summons that is supported by her affidavit stating the reasons she is asking the court to subpoena or call her ex-husband in court. All the material information that will assists Lina in her claim for payment from the exhusband can be put in the Affidavit and this serves as proof of evidence of her claims. Rarely will the Judge hear oral evidence in court from Lina or from her ex-husband in reply. While the Affidavits from either side are given the status of evidence, it does not mean that the court cannot order the parties to be present in court for cross examination by either side or the Judge. There are some cases, that the failure of one party to attend may make that party’s affidavit null. Lina can also prepare an Affidavit to prove proper service of documents to the ex-husband so as to eliminate grounds that it was not received by the ex-husband and thus has no 14 notice of the proceedings. Affidavit has a proper form. It has a title stating the reason or cause of the matter contained therein. With just a look at the title, you would know it is for divorce, child custody, claim for sum of money and so on. Then the Affidavit is divided into paragraphs numbered consecutively and with each paragraph distinct from each other in issues or matter. All dates, numbers, totals, sums are in figures and not in words for easy reading. Affidavit must be clear and concise but not too short that it cannot be understood or too long that it becomes redundant and irrelevant. Then it must be signed and dated by the deponent, Lina in this case and executed before a Commissioner for Oaths or a solicitor. Lina, I assume that you can read and write English, as this is the common language of an Affidavit. If your ability to understand English is in doubt, then it must be interpreted to you in your own dialect and the Interpreter must make a declaration that it was translated to you and you understood the contents then signed with her name and address. Since you are self-represented, you also put you name as the person who filed it in court. If in fact the solicitor is filing for you, then the name, address, date of filing and signature of the solicitor must be endorsed at the Affidavit. The above are the common format of an Affidavit. In Hong Kong, it must comply with some Practice Directions. It must have an additional page at the end named as Backsheet where it must be written the person filing it, the name of the maker of the affidavit, the number of the Affidavit whether this is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on and the date when it was sworn. So there will be 2 dates, which may be on the same or different dates. In addition, it must bear one of the following whether for filing to court, for hearing before a specific Judge, or whether it us an ex-parte application, i.e. where another party is not required to be present in the proceedings. Whether it is Lina or a solicitor the Affidavit must be written in the first person, in this case Lina referred to as “I” and expressed in the words of Lina not the solicitor. The first paragraph normally contains the name, HKID, address, occupation of the deponent. If the deponent is making the Affidavit in her his capacity as a professional, then it must be stated the work address, position held, name of employer’s company and whether employed or owner of the company. If some of the information in the Affidavit is not directly from the knowledge of Lina, then the source of the information must be revealed and Lina must explain why she believes the information. It would suffice if Lina would say, “I have been informed by (name of source) and verily believe that it is true that the information is true and correct”. Lina must not include scandalous allegation against the ex-husband. All irrelevant and oppressive information should be avoided, as the said paragraphs may be struck out if not the whole Affidavit. There must be no arguments or submissions, only matters of fact relating to the issue. Lina may consider attaching some other documents or objects to the Affidavit. Lina can exhibit copy of the bank statements showing proof of the nonpayment of the exhusband. These other proof of non-payment must also be identified by Lina and before the Commissioner of Oath and or the solicitor. The way this document is exhibited is as “L-1” for exhibit of Lina document number 1. The initials of Lina can be used for identification of the documents. If Lina finds difficulty in making an Affidavit, she should get professional help. It may cost more than doing it personally, but it will save time, effort and frustration. When Jesus was born, the wise men from distant places came to Bethlehem to search for Him. They sought Jesus not because they have problems, nor they would like to ask gifts, money or any material things. They simply sought Him because they want to be with Him. And because they sought Him, therefore, they have found Him. Same as true with us now, when we seek Jesus, we will surely find Him. Today, when we celebrate the so-called birthday of Jesus, we ought to seek the Lord and His will. We must have an intimacy with Him and delight ourselves in Lord. And when we delight ourselves in Him, He will give us the desires of our hearts. Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalms 37:4 Sadly, many people have always celebrated the so-called birthday of Jesus only to make themselves happy but not Jesus. They eat, drink, keep on receiving gifts to make themselves merry but not Jesus because they ignore Him. So, after the so-called holiday celebration, they are still unhappy and their hearts are empty. They do not really experience the true happiness that only Jesus could give. We have to seek the blessed Savior - the One who was born in Bethlehem - our Lord Jesus Christ – our blessed assurance. 2. We must worship the Lord Jesus. When the wise men have had found the Lord, they worshiped Him. Likewise, we ought to do the same. However, many Christians go to Church with different motives. Some go only to be healed, to be blessed or to be counseled. Our primary motive when we go to Church must be to worship and to love the Lord. It is not wrong to expect healing as we go to church because it is God’s nature to heal all the sick. As you worship and love the Lord, you will be healed even though you did not ask Him 16 25Worship the LORD your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, 26and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span. 27”I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run. 28I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. 29But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. Exodus 23:25-29 The Blessings of Worshiping God: Thus, we ought to worship the Lord with all our heart, soul, strength, and with all our mind because He is so much worthy. Worshipping God is desiring Him, saying “I love You”, kneeling down, lifting our hands, and with every beat of our heart desiring only Him. : “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being.” Revelation 4:11 3. Bless the Lord. When the wise men have found the new born Jesus, they did not only worship Him but they also offered their best gifts to Him. They offered their best gift of gold, incense and myrrh - their wealth. Nowadays, it is sad to say that many people are commanded by the Lord to give yet they withhold their wealth. Some give only what they would like to give but they do not really give their best. As a result, they do not truly enjoy God’s blessings. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38 you. I understand that I am a sinner, that I cannot save myself. I need a Savior right now. I humble myself to you and confess all my sins I’ve committed. Please forgive me for all my sins and also the sins of my forefathers. Forgive me also for worshipping, bowing, praying, and asking help from idols and carved images. It was wrong and it is a great sin against you. Forgive me for gambling, smoking, committing adultery, fornication, telling lies, deceiving people, taking prohibited drugs. Forgive me for negative thoughts, words and deeds. Forgive me for watching pornographic film, posters and magazines. Forgive me for getting counterfeit power from satan through hypnotism, witchcraft, sorcery, black magic. Forgive me for hatred, resentment, self-pity, envy, jealousy, bitterness, loneliness, weariness and pride. Forgive me Father and my ancestors for worshipping to idols and carved images. I now forgive those who sinned against me, including my parents, brothers, sisters, relatives and even myself. I want to be changed. And from this day on, I will love, respect and show my gratitude to my parents. Lord Jesus, I now give my life to you. I accept you as my Lord Jesus, my Savior and my Healer. Come into my life and reign into my heart. Thank you Lord Jesus for what you have done at the cross of Calvary for me, for my family and for the world. I love you and I will obey you. I will never disappoint you. Since they wanted to bring out the best in Filipino organizations, with regards to skills, talents and intellect, they launched the Tuklas ng Talino in 2009 with categories such as quiz bee, singing solo, essay writing contest, news casting and balagtasan. Sagisag ng Tagumpay 2010 saw the emergence of a cooking competition for the title Chef of the Year 2010. For this year, the Paligsahan ng Galing sa Bayanihan was organised and was recently held last November 13, 2011 at the sports ground of the Bayanihan Center in Kennedy Town. Eddie Villanueva It is that time of year again when the whole world joyfully celebrates the birth of the Messiah, the Son born of a virgin (Matthew 1:23) on Whose shoulders government rests (Isaiah 9:6) and in Whose Name alone salvation is found (Acts 4:12). Revealed in John 3:16 is the Author of this beautiful story of love, sacrifice, and redemption. He is the Heavenly Father who “… loved the world this way: He gave His only Son so that everyone who believes in Him will not die but will have eternal life.” To show just how much the Father loves us, here is an inspiring Father’s Love Letter by Bryan Adams that has been touching lives since 1999. My Child… You may not know Me, but I know everything about you (Psalm 139:1). I know when you sit down and when you rise up (Psalm 139:2). I am familiar with all your ways (Psalm 139:3). Even the very hairs on your head are numbered (Matthew 10:29-31). For you were made in My image (Genesis 1:27). In Me, you live and move and have your being (Acts 17:28). For you are My offspring (Acts 17:28). I knew you even before you were conceived (Jeremiah 1:4-5). I chose you when I planned creation (Ephesians 1:11-12). You were not a mistake, for all your days are written in My Book (Psalm 139:15-16). I determined the exact time of your birth and where you would live (Acts 17:26). You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). I knit you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). And brought you forth on the day you were born (Psalm 71:6). I have been misrepresented by those who don’t know Me (John 8:41-44). I am not distant and angry, but am the complete expression of love (1 John 4:16). And it is My desire to lavish My love on you (1 John 3:1). Simply because you are My child and I am your Father (1 John 3:1). I offer you more than your earthly father ever could (Matthew 7:11). For I am the perfect Father (Matthew 5:48). Every good gift that you receive comes from My hand (James 1:17). For I am your provider and I meet all your needs (Matthew 6:31-33). My plan for your future has always been filled with hope (Jeremiah 29:11). Because I love you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). My thoughts toward you are countless as the sand on the seashore (Psalms 139:17-18). And I rejoice over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17). I will never stop doing good to you (Jeremiah 32:40). For you are My treasured possession (Exodus 19:5). I desire to establish you with all My heart and all My soul (Jeremiah 32:41). And I want to show you great and marvelous things (Jeremiah 33:3). If you seek Me with all your heart, you will find Me (Deuteronomy 4:29). Delight in Me and I will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). For it is I who gave you those desires (Philippians 2:13). I am able to do more for you than you could possibly imagine (Ephesians 3:20). For I am your greatest encourager (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17). I am also the Father who comforts you in all your troubles (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). When you are brokenhearted, I am close to you (Psalm 34:18). As a shepherd carries a lamb, I have carried you close to My heart (Isaiah 40:11). One day I will wipe away every tear from your eyes (Revelation 21:3-4). And I’ll take away all the pain you have suffered on this earth (Revelation 21:3-4). I am your Father, and I love you even as I love My Son, Jesus (John 17:23). For in Jesus, My love for you is revealed (John 17:26). He is the exact representation of My being (Hebrews 1:3). He came to demonstrate that I am for you, not against you (Romans 8:31). And to tell you that I am not counting your sins (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). Jesus died so that you and I could be reconciled (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). His death was the ultimate expression of My love for you (1 John 4:10). I gave up everything I loved that I might gain your love (Romans 8:31-32). If you receive the gift of My Son Jesus, you receive Me (1 John 2:23). And nothing will ever separate you from My love again (Romans 8:38-39). Come home and I’ll throw the biggest party heaven has ever seen (Luke 15:7). I have always been Father, and will always be Father (Ephesians 3:14-15). My question is, Will you be My child? (John 1:12-13) I am waiting for you (Luke 15:11-32) Love, Your Dad The Almighty God More than the gifts, the carols, and the trimmings, let’s make sure we have the greatest gift for which the Father sent His only Son in the flesh – that is eternal life for everyone who will believe in the Father’s Son (John 3:36). The greatest and noblest achievement of a man is to personally know his Creator truthfully, to love Him passionately and wholeheartedly, and to serve Him faithfully with integrity and excellence until he stands before Him on judgment day. Carla daring sa Manila Kingpin: Life Story of Asiong Salonga; dahil Tanduay Calendar Girl na! Siyempre, mag-asawa kayo dapat may kissing scenes. Para kay Asiong Salonga, “ Mas mabuting mamatay sa kamay ng iyong kalaban, kaysa sa kamay ng iyong kaibigan.” 26 friends International Magazine DECEMBER 2011 27 friends International Magazine DECEMBER 2011 Filipino Team supports Cyber-Run for Rehab 2011 PAHK Elects New Directors for 2012 by APG by Violy Pascual Members of the Filipino Friendship Team (FFT) joined the Cyber-Run for Rehab 2011, healthy steps at Cyberport on November 6. The ups and downs of life oftentimes pose a challenge to one’s character. Pain, hardship, trial, or whatever you want to call it, can cause you so much misery and may destruct you into pieces or give you the determination to fight and make yourself stronger, depending on what you choose to be – the wax or the clay. One thing that should not be missed in any situation is to be thankful. It may not come naturally to some, but gratitude is a virtue worth having. Gratitude is more than expressing the words “thank you.” It comes from the heart that remembers every little thing that touched one’s life. Grand news of Good reasons In the face of unpleasant events happening in the Philippines lately, there are still a lot of good news that we should take notice of. On top of the list is the victory of our Pambansang Kamao Manny Pacquiao in his third bout with Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez. Once again, all Filipinos took pride as Pacquiao proved to the world that he is “one of the greatest boxers in the history of the sport.” Another reason for celebration is the inclusion of our very own Puerto Princesa Underground River in the New Seven Wonders of Nature. In a provisional result, Palawan’s pride bested other nominees from over 400 locations over 220 countries. The Philippines also took pride when the 6-footer French-Filipina Gwendolyn Ruais from Mandaluyong City was crowned 1st Runner Up in the Miss World 2011 early this month. The title was the country’s highest finish since Evangeline Pascual in 1973. Lastly, “Lolong”, the 21-foot 4-inch saltwater crocodile recently captured in Agusan del Sur now holds the title of being the world’s longest living crocodile. The Guinness World Record award placed the Philippines in another prestigious status. Great with Gratefulness As we realize that there are so many things to be joyful about, we cause ourselves to express our gratitude. Be it by the way of the lips’ uttering words of appreciation or by the heart’s outpouring of personal prayer… be it in a corner of a simple room or in a site of a grand church… gratitude must flow, gratitude must grow… in and within us. The end of this faith is the salvation of our souls (Peter 1:6-9). LOVE - we can love one another with a pure heart because we have been born again through the word of God which lives and abides forever (Peter 1:22-23). CHRISTMAS is a season of peace. The old testament tells the story of how God set the stage to introduce the prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6) Jesus came to break the sin & blame by making peace for us with God through the blood of his cross (Colossians. 1:20). Instead of blaming us for all the trouble we caused, He bore the blame for all of us. He is now recruiting followers, who having received his forgiveness, want others to receive it as well. When we accept forgiveness from God, we lose our desire to withhold it from others. And when we live in peace with God, we are eager to make peace with others; we can both give and receive the gift of peace this Christmas. At Christmas time, we celebrate the coming of the Prince. Though now our world is locked in strife, one day he’ll make all conflicts cease. Jesus took our place to give us his peace. During the days of Adam & Eve, peace was lost. As soon as they ate the forbidden fruit and realized their nakedness they started blaming each other (Genesis 3:12-13) and introduced conflicts to God’s peaceful planet. Unfortunately, all of their descendants including us have followed their bad example. We blame others for unhappiness, for our own bad choices and become angry when no one accepts the guilt. Blaming others for unhappiness breaks apart families, organizations, churches, communities and nations. We can’t make peace because we’re pre-occupied with placing the blame. This advent, the theme emphasizes on Hope, Peace, Joy and Love which God sent with Christ. HOPE - we have inheritance reserved in heaven, a living hope through the reservation of Christ from the dead. (1 Peter 1:3-5) PEACE - we love life & see good things/days if we turn from evil and do good for the Lord watches over the righteous & hears their prayers. (Peter 3:10-12) JOY - we have inexpressible joy even though we have trials. Our faith is Get your copies NOW! For enquiries call 6090 7147 *Free FIC membership with every book purchase !
