Graduate Attribute: Concerned for the Marginalized
The centrality of the commitment to the poor began with De La Salle and the first schools. He was convinced
that the poor were the ones who needed schools the most and that those who themselves practiced a kind of
Gospel poverty would run the most effective schools for the poor. It was thus, that De La Salle decided not only
to teach the poor, but he himself became poor, sharing in their insecurity and dependence on God.
The schools De La Salle established were not exclusive for the poor. For in fact, those who were well-off were also welcome. The poor
and rich were together, seated in the same classroom. Schools were tuition-free not only because the Gospel itself was free, but also
because everyone thus became equally poor and equally rich. De La Salle refused to discriminate against students because of their
socio-economic background. Of primary worth was each student of predominant value was an education without borders.
Partiality was shown however. Those with less attractive qualities, with the least talents were especially supported and encouraged.
This preference for marginalized and those with little opportunities for human and social advancement is necessary if the benefits of
Christian education, if God’s saving love for all is to be made a reality.
The Lasallian is called upon to be concerned for the marginalized not in the sense of condescending charity. He is called upon to dwell
in the world of the poor and to allow that world to define his choices and actions. He must allow the poor to teach him what constitutes
true happiness and real wealth. Thus, Lasallian education must equip youth with the knowledge and skill needed for the work towards a
more just and equitable society.

Matthew 14:23-31
When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land,
beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them,
walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a
ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no
fear." And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter
got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and
beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him,
saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
Reflection:
The Lord keeps watch over us at all times, and especially in our moments of temptation and difficulty. Jesus
assures us that we have no need of fear if we trust in Him and in his great love for us. When calamities
or trials threaten to overwhelm you, how do you respond? Do you rely on the Lord for his strength and help?
Prayer:
"Lord Jesus, as we prepare for the quarterly exams, help me to trust you always and to never doubt your
presence and your power to help me. In my moments of doubt and weakness, may I cling to you as Peter did.
Strengthen my faith that I may walk straight in the path you set before me, neither veering to the left nor to
the right"

Born in Carmena (province of Toledo, Spain). He was a
student of the Brothers at the Sacred Heart Professional
School in Madrid when he decided to join them in March
of 1927. He was the youngest of the four brothers martyred
in Consuegra (province of Toledo, Spain). He was just 22.

When the Brothers from Condal had to disperse on
account of the religious persecution he succeeded in
reaching his grandmother’s house. There he lived an
exemplary life, working in the orchard and praying. In the
early morning of August 9, the militia arrived at the house
to conduct a search. They looked for Brother Lorenzo.
They asked him what he was doing there and he responded
that he was a teacher who was preparing for exams and he
was spending a few days with his grandmother. A group
searched his room and in a suitcase they found a picture of
him dressed in the habit. – “So, you have lied to us! You
say that you are a teacher but really you are a monk” they
said. “I did not lie. I am a teacher and also a religious of
the Brothers of the Christian Schools” he responded. They
took him away, telling his grandmother that since he had
lied they were going to scare him a little. He did not return. His records indicate that he was shot on August 9,
1936.

Coping With a Learning
Disability

Although a diagnosis of a learning
disability can feel upsetting, it's actually
the first step in resolving the condition.
Once a person's particular problem has
pinpointed, he or she can then follow strategies or
take medicines to help cope with the disability. And
taking steps to manage the disability can often help
restore a student's self-esteem and confidence.
Some students who have been diagnosed with a
learning disability work with a special teacher or tutor for
a few hours a week to learn certain study skills, notetaking strategies, or organizational techniques that can
help them compensate for their learning disability.
If you've been diagnosed with a learning disability, you
may need support just for the subjects that give you
the most trouble. Your school might have a special
classroom with a teacher who is trained to help students
overcome learning problems.
Some schools develop what is called an Individualized
Education Program (or IEP), which helps define a
person's learning strengths and weaknesses and make
a plan for the learning activities that will help the student
do his or her best in school. A student's IEP might
include sessions with a tutor or time in a specialized
classroom for a certain subject, or the use of special
equipment to help with learning, such as books on tape
or laptop computers for students who have dyslexia.
Medication is often prescribed to help students with
ADHD. Several medicines on the market today can help
improve a student's attention span and ability to focus
and help control impulses and other hyperactive
behavior.
There's no cure for a learning disability. And you don't
outgrow it. But it's never too late to get help. Most
people with these disabilities adapt to their learning
differences and find strategies that help them
accomplish their goals and dreams.

BUWAN NG WIKA, HINDI LINGGO NG WIKA!
Ang unang araw ng Agosto ang simula ng taunang pagdiriwang ng BUWAN
NG WIKA.
Ang pagpapahalaga at pagdiriwang noon sa wika ay isang linggo lamang na
tinatawag na LINGGO NG WIKA.
Ang selebrasyon ay batay sa Presidential Proclamation No. 186 noong
Setyembre 23, 1955 na nilagdaan ng Pangulong Ramon Magsaysay. Nagsisimula
ng Agosto 13 at natatapos ng ika-19 ng Agosto na kaarawan ng Pangulong
Manuel L. Quezon, ang kinikilalang Ama ng Wikang Pambansa. Ayon sa
Pangulong Magsaysay sa isang bahagi ng kanyang proklamasyon, ang tunay na
nalalabi sa atin ay ang magkaisa sa pagpapalaganap at pagpapayaman ng wika.
Kung gaano natin kailangan ang Ingles sa pakikipagtalastasan sa ibang bansa,
ibayo ang sariling wika upang tayong mga Pilipino ay ganap na magkaunawaan
at magkaisa tungo sa ikatatatag ng sarili at ikadadakila ng ating Inang Bayan.
Nang sumapit ang panahon ni Pangulong Fidel V. Ramos, tulak ng
pagkamakabayan at pagpapahalaga sa sariling wika, noong Hulyo 15, 1997,
nilagdaan niya ang Proclamation No 104 na nag-aatas na ang Agosto ay
BUWAN NG WIKA at NASYONALISMO. Ipinagpatuloy ni Pangulong
Joseph Estrada ang paggamit at pagpapalaganap ng wikang Filipino. Mula sa
kanyang panunumpa sa tungkulin at talumpati bilang Pangulo ng Pilipinas noong
Hunyo 30, 1998 sa makasaysayang simbahan ng Barasoain sa Malolos, Bulacan
hanggang sa pagtatalumpati sa iba’t ibang pagkakataon. Gayundin ang sumunod
sa kanyang si Pangulong Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at hanggang ngayon kay
Pangulong Benigno S. Aquino III, ay hindi nagkulang sa pagpapahalaga at
paggamit ng sariling wika. sa kanyang State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA).
Hanggang sa kasalukuyan anumang panahon sa loob ng buwan ng Agosto ang
selebrasyon ipinakikintal sa ating isipan na ang Agosto ay tatawaging BUWAN
NG WIKA at hindi LINGGO NG WIKA.
Ang wika ay kaluluwa ng bansa. Hindi lamang ito nagsisilbing medium o paraan
ng komunikasyon kundi tumatayo rin bilang pangunahing mekanismo na sa
pamamagitan nito, ang landas sa buhay ng mga mamamayan ng isang bansa ay
napananatili.
