The Presence of the Lord
Thanks to all of our Brother Knights who attended this
month's council meeting and just a reminder, all Brother
Knights are welcome to join us for dinner and fellowship,
capped off with our council meeting that usually lasts
about an hour.
A special thanks to the Brother Knights who came out to
volunteer and show support for our inaugural 2014
KNIGHT'S CHALICE. Thank you to the Brother Knights
who brought their family members. I hope everyone
enjoyed the day and will come and support it again next
year! Please take a look at the photos included in this
month's newsletter. We will soon begin making plans
for next year's event and hope you'll bring your good
ideas to the table. 2917 is always looking for new ideas
to reach out to the community and raise money for the
charities we support.
Also, elections are coming up so please make sure you
attend our next council meeting to vote. Participation and
a positive attitude based on unity, fraternity, charity and
patriotism is 2917's key to success that is so beneficial
to the groups we support.

We often go through life speculating exactly where the
Lord is in our lives when strife or discord has surrounded
us. It is so easy for us to assume the Lord has abandoned
us in our time of need. It is so easy for us to make the
assertion that God does not listen to us when we need
him most. Each of these assertions made by us is simply
not true because the Lord never leaves our side for any
reason.
Look at the two disciples walking the road to Emmaus.
Out of nowhere the Lord appears to them and they have
no idea who he is or why he is with them. The two disciples
never stop to ask themselves the question “how did the
Lord get here?” In a similar way we are like the two
disciples the Lord walked with. In times of trouble, stress,
despair, heartache and the like, we have little to no clue
the Lord is walking with us because we are so consumed
with everything else that is going on in our lives. We
take leave of the fact the Lord vowed that he would be
with us until the end of time.
Do not assume the Lord is only with us in spirit. No, he
is with us in the flesh. He is with us on every level of
love we can imagine. We need look no further than
those individuals we love, respect and admire to see the
real presence of the Lord in our lives. For who but the
Lord could share such an immense love with us through
others? The Lord’s presence is real and active each
day of our lives. No matter where we are or what we
encounter.

We have had a busy rental schedule these past few
months, but that is no reason for you not to continue
promoting the rental of our facility. Through our recent
rentals, we have had many new faces visit our facility
and all have been impressed with the buildings and
grounds. Please continue promoting our rentals.
Over the past years we have been very successful with
volunteers to take care of some of our regular maintenance needs, both professional and non-professional.
I commend our weekly and monthly volunteers for their
dedicated service. For several months our monthly work
day volunteer group has dwindled, where we were having 15 or more men show up, we are now getting less
than 10 men. With this shortage of manpower, we are
having to work our volunteers harder. I am asking you,
if you have the time available to help this group of volunteers maintain our facility, please join us— we need
your assistance. All members of Council 2917 need to
remember that the money saved by volunteering to help
with our maintenance is given back to the council to go
towards our charity program, and Charity is the major
Principle of our Order.
The weekday workers for May were: Joe Pavlik, Richard
Pavlas, Doug Wendt, Brian Kubiak and John Buck.
The monthly workers were: John Buck, Doug Wendt,
Mike Kloss, Billy Hoffart, Bill Selvaggi, Buddy Hudec, Ben
Kaminski, David Cornelius, and Charles Heinrich.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The trash dumpster we have is
for KC & NSCC use only! This dumpster is not for
personal use. On past occasions, people have overstuffed our dumpster and when the dumpster truck
came to empty the dumpster they took a picture of the
overflowing dumpster and wrote us a citation. Please
do not use our dumpster for personal use.

For the past several years, the NorthSide
Columbus Club has donated the use of
Odin Hall to the Down Syndrome
Association to use for their annual
luncheon. This donation is part of our
organization’s charity program.
Brothers Mike Kloss and Doug Wendt look on as
GK Joe Earthman presents a check for $5000 to
St. Pius X High School. This check is for five $1000
student scholarships.

Buck, presented Irazema Ortiz, Principal at
Assumption School, a $5,000 check earmarked
for equipment to furnish classrooms for the
upcoming school year.
Council 2917 presented a $5,000 check to Cathy Stephen,
Principal at St. Rose of Lima School, earmarked for equipment
necessary to furnish new classrooms for the upcoming school
year.

due to the success of
Council 2917’s
Casino Night for 2013.
At the presentations mentioned above, it was very rewarding to see the appreciation the students
and parents have for our contributions. It was especially rewarding at St Pius X High School when
so many parents and students made a special effort to give us thanks. Casino Night expects to
continue it’s success in 2014. Casino Night success and profit depends on the ability to sell all it’s
tickets, maintain and get new sponsorships and obtain large ticket items for the silent auction
table. This year, through the generosity of a person who attended for the first time last year, we
will be offering a one week stay at a beach home on Galveston Island as a silent auction item.
Will you help us sell all 200 Casino Night tickets, get more sponsorships or more items for the
silent auction table? We need everyone’s help. Keep Casino Night needs in your mind when you
are talking with your friends, relatives, neighbors and business associates. It only takes a second
to ask.

FOURTH DEGREE NEWS
Brother Knights:
As a 4th degree member, you are “Knighted”
a Sir Knight. Sir Knights of Bishop Odin
Council are assigned to the Msgr. Wilhelm Assembly.
Meetings are held once a month at the Cathedral
Center with ample free parking next to the center.
A meal is served before every meeting with no charge
to the attendees. Wives are welcome; however, during
the meeting they visit in another room. Many of our
“turnouts” are at the Co-Cathedral with Cardinal DiNardo
as the celebrant. We are considered the protective arm
of our Cardinal. Bishop Odin Council 2917 has about
550 members. Of these only 43 of our council are
members of the 4th Degree. This is less than 8.0%.
This probably is the lowest participation of all the
councils assigned to the Wilhelm Assembly. Below is
a breakdown of the cost of becoming a Sir Knight.
First and foremost, the “Official Dress” of a Sir Knight
is a black tuxedo with all the trimmings such as black
bow tie, black shoes, tuxedo shirt, cummerbund, white
gloves, suspenders, cufflinks, and studs. All of the above
can be purchased at Al’s Formal Wear for $149.00.
Depending on quality of fabric, the prices of the tuxes
range from $149.00, $179.00 and $234.99 which
includes all of the above items. The cost of the “Social
Baldric,” lapel pin, and banquet ticket is $70.00 or a
total outlay of $219.00. The cost of items for “Full
Regalia” which includes the sword package, chapeau
with carrying case, and cape will cost you about another
$400.00. If you are interested in becoming a Sir Knight
or want additional information, just call me. You will be
inspired.

Province invited members of Council 2917 to
attend the blessing and dedication Mass of their
new chapel—MARY, QUEEN OF PREACHERS.
Those attending were: GK Joe Earthman, Brothers
John Buck and Jim Descant and Ladies’ Auxiliary
President, Kelly Clawson.

Don Psencik presented an $800 check to St. Rose Principal,
Cathy Stephen, to be divided between the 6 winners of this
year’s essay contest to be used towards the students’ tuition
for the next school year.

you see her. We then reviewed the changes we made to
our by-laws at the March meeting and approved the final

#2917.

We also discussed the Summer Fling which is at the end
of summer. We will be having the dessert booth again, so
we will need everyone to bring in a dessert that day. More
info as it gets nearer. We will also be donating two items
for the mini-raffle. If you don't have your ticket to attend,
make sure you get one. We always have a good time.
Our next meeting will be July 16 at 11:00 am. We will be
having a potluck style luncheon. Please bring in salads,
sandwiches, chips, dips, and desserts. We are hoping to
keep it light and cool since it will be in the middle of the
hot summer.
