June / July - Kehilath Israel Synagogue
KEHILATH ISRAEL’S
Vol. 50, Issue 6/7
June-July, 2014
A rabbi, a cantor, and a synagogue president
were driving to a seminar when they were
kidnapped. The hijackers asked the three of them
to hand over all of their money and jewelry. When
they replied that they hadn’t any, the hijackers
told them that immediately after their last wishes
were fulfilled, they would be killed. “My last
wish,” began the rabbi, is to give a fascinating,
complicated, long sermon that I have always wanted to but never
been allowed to give.” “We will grant your wish,” the hijackers
replied. “My last wish,” said the cantor, “is to sing a beautiful,
Yemenite style song, one of my own compositions lasting two
hours. I have never been allowed to sing it.” “We’ll let you sing
it,” replied the hijackers. “What is your last wish,” the hijackers
asked the shul president. “Please, please shoot me now!”
Synagogues throughout the world are struggling to meet the
challenge to provide for the spiritual needs of today’s Jewish
individuals. If you are familiar with the famous Pew report,
being Jewish to most Jewish Americans means remembering
the Holocaust, leading an ethical/moral life, working for social
justice, being intellectually curious, caring about Israel and
having a good sense of humor. Being part of a Jewish community
and observing Jewish law was on the bottom of the list. They
find synagogue services boring, rituals leave them unmoved and
perplexed, and wonder, why be Jewish. To add to the challenge,
thirty-four percent of those who identified as Jews said that one
can be Jewish and believe in Jesus.
The good news is that Jewish people are the most avid seekers
of spirituality. However, many who grew up in synagogues did
not find what they were looking for. Over the last several decades,
many synagogues have resorted to “dumbing down” Judaism in
the hope that if Judaism was made easier for people, more people
would join. This concept proved dead wrong. As a matter of
fact, most Jewish people are looking for something authentic
and serious, something real and something Americanism can’t
provide. They want answers to life’s questions: Who am I? Why
am I here? How then shall I live? Those are the questions for
which we need faith to answer.
As a shul and as a community, we must become a home to
spiritual seekers. In order to accomplish this we must decide what
we are here for, what younger Jewish individuals and families
are looking for and how Kehilath Israel Synagogue can help
people on their spiritual journey. There are no easy answers and
will certainly require thinking “outside of the box.”
I look forward to taking that journey with you and making it
a reality.
Rabbi Jeffrey A. Shron

Dear KI Congregational Family,
I hope this issue of the Focal Point finds
everyone well. Summer is fast approaching and
it looks to be a busy spring and summer season
here at K.I.
Rabbi Shron has some fun Shabbat evenings
planned for our outdoor space in back of K.I.
with catered meals which I know will be a good time for all
who attend, and I hope that is all of us. There will be some fun
programming in the months to come so please watch for them,
consider volunteering for them and most of all attend.
We will be doing a Mitzvah Day which is always a very rewarding way to spend the day helping those less fortunate than
ourselves.
The K.I. officers and board are working to go through a list
of committees dating back to the 1980s and decide which are
pertinent to K.I. today. We will then have our officers picking the
committee chairs who will then work to seat their committees.
When someone asks you to participate in a committee please
take part. Synagogues as well as other organizations work far
better when those in the organization take an active role in helping move the group forward in a positive manner. This includes
helping on committees whose work it is to guide, plan, organize,
program and enhance a particular area of K.I. You might even
pick a committee that is a particular area interest to you and approach the officer or chairperson in charge and volunteer. We
will soon have a list that outlines the committee, chairperson
and the officer liaison to make it easier for you to make contact.
K.I. cannot make positive strides forward if we all don’t pitch
in. Committee membership is a perfect way to do your part to
help K.I. accomplish great things.
Briefly, I will update you on some projects we are already
working on. We have identified a firm to do our financial review
and will be moving forward with that project soon.
The new K.I. website is very close to a go live date and it
promises to be a hit. It will have terrific interactivity, ease of
use, simple navigation and very orderly. I am really looking
forward to its arrival.
The K.I. Golf Tournament will be another resounding success and has become K.I.’s second largest fundraiser. Thank
you to Amy Goldstein, Alan Gallas and their wonderful team
of volunteers!
In future issues I will be asking other K.I. officers to write for
the Focal Point; I know they will be well received. Please have a
fun and safe summer, and I hope to see you all at K.I. very soon!
All the best,
Craig Caplan, Presiden

Tisha B’Av (the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av) is a day of mourning during
which Jews fast and bewail the destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem. Along with
Yom Kippur, it is the only full day fast on our calendar. This fact alone should impress
upon us the importance that is placed on the observance of this day for all Jews. The
preceding period, known as the “three weeks” that began with the Fast of Tammuz on
Tuesday, July 15, is considered to be the saddest time in the Jewish calendar when all
evidence of joy disappears until the conclusion of Tisha B’Av.
Since World War II, many Jews have chosen Tisha B’Av as the day to commemorate
the (Yahrzeit) loss of those family members who were killed by the Nazis and their
associates on dates that are unknown. The Talmud states that G-d decreed this particular
day as a day of woe and misfortune in the very beginning of Jewish history. According
to this interpretation, the ninth of Av was the day when the Jews in the desert of Sinai
bewailed their lot when the spies brought back bad tidings from Canaan (Parshat
Shelach). So G-d declared: “You cried without cause; I will, therefore, make this an
eternal day of mourning for you.” And it was then that the decree was ordered for the
destruction of the Temple, and the scattering of the Jews amongst the peoples of the
earth.

of Israel.
With our May 22nd Pack meeting last month,
Cub Scout Pack 3153 has completed its 25th
year of providing the Cub Scout program to
the Jewish community since being founded
and sponsored by Kehilath Israel Synagogue in
1988. A “transition ceremony” was held moving
the boys up one grade level in their program. Now the summer
programming begins with camp programs and planned “Summertime Pack Activities.”
Camp Programs include Cub Scout Day Camp (coordinated by
Elly Goldstein, Cubmaster), Overnight “Bear” Resident Camp for
boys going into 3rd grade in the fall (lead by Brian Balanoff and
Aaron Tarjan), and Overnight “Webelos” Resident Camp for boys
beginning 4th and 5th grades in the fall (lead By Brad Klinock and
Richard Jacobson). Overnight/Resident Camping programs are
held at the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation in Bonner Springs. As
has been the case since the Pack’s inception, the additional expense
incurred in order to provide kosher meals is generously subsidized
by the K.I. Men’s Club.
We are anticipating substantial growth (to 40+ boys) within the
Pack this coming year, as the “incoming” class of current kindergarteners is substantial. We have held a “Spring Recruitment” to
introduce the programming, and will do a “Fall Recruitment” in
late August or early September. The first “special event” will be
the Sukkah “Camp-in” on Chol Hamoed Sukkot, October 11, in the
K.I. Sukkah.
Cub Scout Pack 3153 is open to all boys who will be entering the
1st through 5th grades this fall from throughout both the Jewish
and general communities. The program is Shabbat and holiday
observant and maintains kashrut at all functions. If you (or your
friends) have sons, grandsons, nephews, etc. in this age range, this is
*THE* activity to look into! For further information regarding Cub
Scout Pack 3153, please do not hesitate to contact Elly Goldstein

COMMUNITY CORNER
Annual Community-Wide All Night Shavuot Program A Kansas City Tradition to Feature Keynote Speaker
Rabbi Tovia Singer
The Jewish community will join together
for the annual all-night Shavuot program
on Tuesday, June 3 at K.I. Synagogue. The
evening begins at 8:15 p.m. with two Mincha
services and followed by a catered buffet
dinner which requires advance prepaid
reservations. At 10:15 p.m., noted author,
educator, popular radio talk show host and
world renowned public speaker, Rabbi Tovia
Singer will present: “The Battle of the Jewish
Soul! Are the Missionaries Winning?” A
rabbinic panel will respond to Rabbi Singer’s
keynote afterward. Rabbi Singer will lead a
study session at 1:30 a.m. and an informal
study session with area rabbis will follow. A
sunrise traditional service and an egalitarian
service, both followed by breakfast will
conclude this holiday celebration. Stay for a
few hours or remain until dawn and engage
in study opportunities throughout the night.
Snacks and coffee will be served.
This program is cosponsored by The
Rabbinical Association of Greater KC,
supported by area congregations and funded
by the Frank Morgan Fund of Kehilath Israel
Synagogue.

Congregations help Feed the
Hungry for Rosh Hashanah
Jewish Family Services, in partnership with
the Rabbinical Association of Greater Kansas
City, has teamed up with area congregations
in response to the ever-growing need for food
assistance in Kansas City. In preparation for
Rosh Hashanah, our congregation has chosen
to collect donations of Grape Juice. These
items will provide food for Rosh Hashanah to
more than 150 households in our community.
Please drop off your food donations in
the specially labeled collection barrels in
our building through August; items will be
picked up and distributed through the JFS
Holiday Project prior to the start of Rosh
Hashanah. If you have any questions please
contact Susan Choucroun, 816.942.8317.
If you would like information regarding
the JFS Food Pantry, or would like to become
a JFS Food Pantry recipient, volunteer, or
donor, please call Jo Hickey, Food Pantry
Director, Jewish Family Services, www.jfskc.

Learn to capture your personal stories at
June 12 author event
All of us have special stories to share, but
sometimes putting those memories down on
paper can be challenging. You can learn some
of the tricks of the trade on capturing those
special times from local author Rolland Love
on Thursday, June 12 during a special program.
Love, a veteran writer whose short stories and
novels are written in a style that has often been
compared to Mark Twain, has co-authored the
book “Homegrown in the Ozarks Mountain
Meals and Memories,” about growing up in
the Missouri Ozarks.
Love’s June 12 program is co-sponsored
by Jewish Family Services’ Help@Home
program, the Jewish Community Center’s
Heritage Center and the Johnson County
Library. This event will take place 1-2 p.m. in
the Multi-Activity Center (Theatre wing) of the
Jewish Community Campus, While Love’s
presentation is free, reservations are requested
by June 9 by calling Dawn Staton, JFS director
of older adult initiatives, at (913) 327-8239, or
emailing her at dstaton@jfskc.org.
the Positive Aging Expo, a day dedicated
to sharing information to various programs,
services, activities and resources for positive,
purposeful aging and keeping one’s self happy,
healthy and active. The expo is co-sponsored
by Jewish Family Services and Catholic
Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Inc. The
expo, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will take place at
the Jewish Community Campus; it is free with
a charge for lunch.
Annarose Ingarra-Milch, an expert on positive
aging and author of “Lunch with Lucille”, will
be the keynote speaker. There will be a variety
of hands-on activities and presentations on
such things as nutrition, spiritual and wellbeing.
