Aalborg University CopeNhagen Aalborg University Copenhagen (AAUCph) is one of two branches of Aalborg University not actually situated in Aalborg. One US-Dollar is equivalent to approximately 5.70 Danish Crowns (DKK) and one Euro is If you need to figure out how to get from one place to another by public transportation, an easy way is to use the Journey Planner website (in Danish ’Rejseplanen’). You just type in your starting point and ending point, and the Journey Planner then maps out your entire trip, including possible bus or train changes. Find the Journey Planner here: www.rejseplanen.dk/bin/query.exe/en Tickets and Zones The Greater Copenhagen area is divided into zones. At bus stops and train stations, you will find coloured zone maps that help you calculate the fare for your journey. The most expensive coloured zone you pass through on your journey from A to B determines the fare you have to pay. You pay for a minimum of two zones. Metro, bus and train can be combined as much as you like as long as your ticket is valid. The back of your ticket tells you when the ticket expires. You can buy your ticket at the ticket office or in the machines at the stations. Most things in Copenhagen are located within a reasonable distance, so riding a bicycle is usually both cheaper, healthier and sometimes even faster. When it gets dark outside, you are required by law to have lights on the bike, so remember always to bring along two lights for the bicycle – a white light for the front, and red light for the back. A new bicycle costs between 1.5003.000 DKK. You can buy new bicycles 6 a bit cheaper at some larger Danish supermarkets like Kvickly, Føtex, and Bilka. If you don’t mind riding a used bicycle, you can also purchase one a lot cheaper, at either the Police Auction for lost properties, or at ‘Kjøbenhavns Genbrugs Compagni’. Note that you might have expenses for repairs on a bike if you buy it at the auction. buy clothes at a reasonable price. In the larger Danish supermarkets such as Føtex, Kvickly and Bilka, you can find cheap new clothes. If your budget is a little tighter or you just don’t feel like wearing clothes from a supermarket, a great alternative might also be buying second hand clothes. In Denmark buying second hand and vintage clothes has become a popular trend among young people. Police Auction Check for new auction dates: www.topauktioner.dk/information.htm Phone: (+45) 39 62 02 72. The auctions take place at Tæbyvej 3 B, 2610 Rødovre. When you return the empty container to the supermarket you will get the money for the container back. This applies to both plastic bottles, glass bottles and cans, but does not apply to wine bottles. Should you need to call home at a low cost the easiest way is to use the 10 DKK Lebara sim-card that Aalborg University Copenhagen will provide you with on your first day of study. This card gives you a personal phone number and allows you to make very inexpensive international as well as domestic calls. If you do not want a sim-card for your phone, you can buy a pre-paid calling card called ‘Global One’. The Global One card costs 100 DKK and offers some of the cheapest prices for international calls. It can be bought at both post offices or in kiosks. Accommodation Grocery Shopping Be aware that some supermarkets do not accept foreign credit cards, so you might want to bring along some cash when you go shopping. The cheapest places to go grocery shopping are Aldi, Lidl, Netto, Fakta and Rema1000. that you also start actively searching for alternative accommodation on your own, as soon as possible. Renting a room in Copenhagen usually costs between 2.500-4.500 DKK per month. The accommodation situation in Copenhagen is challenging. The Accommodation Office at AAU-Cph has only a very limited number of rooms and has a long waiting list. If you would like to be on the list you will need to apply in advance, but be aware that the list operates on a first-come-first-served basis. That means that we highly recommend http://www.en.cph.aau.dk/International+Students/accommodation-in-copenhagen/ Sign up for the waiting list: accommodation@cph.aau.dk If you own a smart phone you may also consider using Skype or other similar apps that allow you to talk to your 8 family and friends for free. If you do not own a smart phone, you can still use Skype on a regular computer with internet access, to ‘phone’ another computer anywhere in the world for free. If a family member or friend has access to a smart phone, you may also dial them up for free from an iPhone using either the app ‘Viber’ or the app ‘Tango’. THE BUDDY NETWORK AT AAU-CPH A unique opportunity for you to link up with a current student at AAU-Cph and get familiar with the campus and Copenhagen, and get a friend forever.
