Is it really 2015?! I love the beginning of
each new year. It’s a fresh start and the
ideal time to reflect on the past year. Did
you make any New Year’s Resolutions?
If one of your resolutions includes
finishing projects, then The Nest Day trip
is designed for you! This day is set aside
for some fun new projects and time to
get those other projects done. All that’s
included is listed in the events section of
this newsletter. Yummy snacks, lunch and
dinner at That Place are included in the
day’s price! If gentlemen are uninterested
in the day’s activities, they are welcome to
join us for dinner. It’s going to be a great

Growing Up Hawkeye
Derek Pagel arrived at The University of Iowa as a small-town
walk-on, and left five years later for the bright lights of New York
as an NFL draft pick. In between, he helped usher in a new era of
Hawkeye football. Pagel shares inside stories of the transition from
legendary coach Hayden Fry to Kirk Ferentz, of the frustration that
set in as the Hawkeyes sank to 0-8 in the Big Ten Conference in
1999, and of the celebration as they went 8-0 just three seasons
later. Relive the highlights with Pagel as he explains how he - and
the program - grew up under Ferentz. Read about how the coaching
staff orchestrated the climb from the cellar, how the team pulled
together to shake off failure, and how Pagel personally grew and
matured into a player worthy of a scholarship and a pro contract.

Five Reasons You Should Give
Your Kids a Monthly Allowance
1. Teach the Concept of Budgeting
An allowance is one of the best
tools you have for teaching kids the
concept of budgeting. A regular,
monthly allowance works because it
consistently reinforces the idea that
they have a budget, and need to find
a way to fit their monthly purchases
into that budget. If they spend it all
on the first day of the month, they
need to wait an entire month until
they have money again.
2. Avoid Unnecessary Purchases
Even though they get an allowance,
you will likely still buy their
necessities (food, basic clothing and
shoes, school supplies and books)
but they need to pay for the extras.
What are extras? They include video
games, toys, fashion accessories,
candy, and any other purchase which
is not a necessity. The beauty of the
allowance system is, that when it
comes out of their own pockets, the
children are much more selective
about their purchases.
3. Teach Them To Save Towards a
Bigger Goal
If your kids receive $10 per month
each, in addition to birthday and
holiday gifts, this gives them a nice
amount of cash, especially if they
manage to save. In fact, one of the
best things about an allowance is that
it enables kids to see very clearly that
if they delay gratification for a while,
those $10 will grow to $30, and they
could find themselves being able to
afford nicer items – whether that be
clothing or computer games.
4. Teach Them Responsibility
When children have their own money,
they learn responsible behavior
and taking accountability for their
actions. For example, your child
always forgets her jacket at school.
You tell her that she may lose a jacket
ONCE and you will buy her a new
jacket. But, if she loses it more than
once, she would have to participate
in the purchase of a new jacket. This
teaches her take ownership and better
care of her possessions. .
5. Give them Independence
Kids have so little independence these
days. An allowance is a wonderful way
to give them complete control over
something and enable them to make
their own decisions. Try very hard not
to interfere with your kids’ decisions
on what to do with their allowance. As
long as they’re not buying something
dangerous or inappropriate, allow
them do whatever they want with
their allowance. You will find they are
very responsible with their money,
spending it carefully and wisely. And
if they aren’t, then that is a lesson
better learned when they are young.

The Branson travelers got an
early start on the Christmas
spirit! For some of us, it was
our first trip to the area and it
certainly did not disappoint!
After each show we decided
that one was our favorite! Five
shows and incredibly good
food made the days go by fast.
The Welk Resort was lovely. On
the second night at the resort,
one of Santa’s elves treated
us to milk and cookies and a
bedtime story. The pictures tell
it all!

Responsibilities: Network administrator,
computer software and hardware support,
maintenance of software and hardware systems
and data processing duties. (He takes care of all
our computers!)
Loves about HCSB: As a “nerd” I like that
HCSB is willing to invest in new technology,
which gives me new things to play with but also
allows us to offer new products to our customers
or enhance our current products. HCSB is a small
town bank that is able to offer the products of
larger financial institutions.
Hobbies: Watching the Denver Broncos,
watching the Waterloo Blackhawks and spending
time with my niece and nephews.
Family: Two brothers; one in Jesup, one in
Hudson. Both have two kids, ages four and six.
What You Can Do About Fatigue
If you’ve been feeling unusually tired for more than a week or two, it’s time for some
detective work. Here are some common fatigue suspects:
Poor Diet
Use the right “fuel” for your body, start with breakfast. Though sugar, coffee, tea and
chocolate may give you a temporary boost, they may worsen fatigue long term. Combine
whole grains, fruits or vegetables with lean protein for staying power- for example, eat a
whole-wheat bagel with low-fat cheese and a piece of fruit.
Lack of Movement
Sedentary activities can produce muscle fatigue, but exercise improves oxygen flow
and boosts energy.
Keep it simple: Stretch at your desk or take a break with an elastic exercise band. A
brisk 10 minute walk will energize you for up to two hours!
Stress and Anxiety
These draining emotions can be exhausting. Take action to relieve bothersome
problems, learn some relaxation techniques (Pilates and stretching are good choices)
and enjoy quiet pursuits, such as reading or listening to soothing music, each day.
Not Enough Shut-Eye
Experts say most of us do best with seven to eight hours of sleep daily. Losing one
or two hours of sleep regularly can decrease alertness. Improve sleep by avoiding
eating, drinking or exercising three to four hours before going to bed, keeping a
regular bedtime and taking time to relax before lights out.

Do You Have a Will?
A recent Lawyer.com survey
reports that approximately 35%
of adults in the U.S. do not have
valid wills. If you are one of these
people, make a resolution to take
care of this basic responsibility
in 2015. The following are some
issues to consider when drawing
up a will. But first, you will want to
find a good lawyer to help ensure
that your estate will be divided as
you wish.
Decide Who Gets
Your Possessions
When you draft a will, you direct
who gets your possessions when
you die. Additionally, you can
use a will to make charitable
donations. Your will may also
be used to disinherit estranged
heirs or to unequally distribute
possessions to heirs who have
already received substantial gifts.
Without a will, a probate court
will decide how to distribute
your belongings. You could leave
instructions instead of a will, but
the court is not legally bound to
follow them, and may actually be
legally bound to act contrary to
them.
Lower Taxes and
the Cost of Probate
Probating a will is typically less
expensive, less time-consuming
and less complicated than
probating an estate without a
will. That is primarily because in
a will you can name an executor
who acts without a bond and
without court supervision. Most
estates are small enough to
escape federal estate taxes, but
if your estate is over $5 million,
it is imperative that you see an
experienced estate-planning
attorney.
Decide Who Cares For
Your Minor Children
If you don’t have a will that
specifies who you’ve chosen as
guardian or guardians for your
minor children, then the probate
court, after listening to testimony
of others, will make this decision.
Your children could end up in
the care of persons neither you
nor they would choose. The
most often chosen guardians are
married couples who are family.
Establish A Trust
For Your Children
Many people do not know that
they can establish trusts for their
children in their wills (whether
minors or not). You can choose
how old your children will be
before the trustee distributes their
share to them. Until they reach
that age, the trustee can use the
assets of the trust to care for your
children. More often than not, the
trustee and the guardian are the
same person or persons.
Protect Your Business
It is tragic when a family has no
source of income and employees
lose their jobs because the
business owner died without a
plan for continuing the business.
A good attorney can help a
business owner with business
continuity planning, and it starts
with a well-drafted will.
