The project’s goal is to provide our customer Swegon ILTO
OY a new remote user interface for the Metrel CE-Link
device that is fit for the needs of mass production.
Improvement of automatization, ease of access and visual
clarity are our cornerstones for the project. Our product will
help Swegon ILTO OY keep up the high quality of their
products even while increasing production.
Using the
principal of Poka-yoke we will be able to quickly separate and
identify products that have not passed a quality check from
products that have so they can be safely forwarded to
customers.
Modernization of Turun Sanomat newspaper. This project
includes improvements in the layout of Turun Sanomat web
site (responsive web pages) and creation of the prototype of
the newspaper in order to have a feedback from real
customers about the project. Also one of the goals in our
project if we have enough time is to adapt this web site to
different platforms, like pc, tablet and phone to view the same
pages on these devices.

Our project is to develop a new technical product, application,
operation model or service that helps elderly people. By
doing research for the target groups we started to find
problems that exist. Using electrical devices is a common
problem; problems with computers and Internet are just one
part of a bigger problem. The aim of the project is to share
information to elderly person in a "proper form". Proper
means that they learn and can use the information shared.
So we are creating a customized course about computers
and Internet usage for elderly people.

We have seen a need to help low functioning autistic people
interact with the world. A standard computer keyboard has
too many buttons and may confuse and upset such people,
this we have designed TACK, a fifteen button (with a 16th
acting as a toggle) multifunction keyboard with removable
buttons and a programmable USB interface for Windows.
This can be used to interact with a wide variety of
applications, based on the teensy board with a customised
case designed by Jere Naski, Project inspiration also by Jere.

RoShamBones is an addictive puzzle game for mobile
platforms. In each level, the main goal is to solve the puzzle
between our yet-to-be-named dog character and his bone.
The obstacle consists of both destroyable and undestroyable
blocks that can be dragged on top of other blocks. The
blocks can destroy each other based on some intuitive rules
of the classic Rock-Paper-Scissors game (“roshambo”)
spiced up with completely new block pairs (e.g. bomb and
matchstick). The game features cartoony graphics and will
have tons of levels included when ready.

ICT-portti
Funded by the foundation established to commemorate the
technology industry’s hundred-year history, Turku Game Lab
is a working environment shared by the Turku University of
Applied Sciences and the Turku University where students
from both the technical and artistic fields can meet and
develop games together. The game lab functions with the
Living Lab principle where every student interested in game
development has access to the lab’s modern tools –
computers, graphics tablets, software and books among
other things. A part of the game lab scheme is also the game
“museum”, where the most important milestones in the
history of gaming are displayed and available to use. The
modern counterpart of the museum is the demo room where
one can research the games of today on many different
gaming consoles. A few times a year game developers come
together at the Turku Game Lab in an event called Game
Jam to have fun and meet fellow developers for 48 hours all
the while developing games.

ICT-portti is conducted in collaboration with Turku University
of Applied Sciences, University of Turku, and Turku Science
Park Ltd. The aim of this project is to support small and
medium sized enterprises in exploiting information and
communication technology more efficiently. The project is cooperating with ICT service providers in the region of
Southwest Finland. ICT-portti was initiated in the beginning
of 2009 and the feedback of customers has been very
supporting and satisfying. Work assignments vary from
specification on information systems to supporting
initializations of new applications and designing and
implementing websites. All of the assignments are
customized based on customers’ needs. The idea of projects
is to add co-operation between educational institutions and
business life, ease graduates' transition into working life,
ease companies to recruit new employees, and include
industry needs into teaching. The main idea is that
“everybody
learns
something,
everybody
benefits
something”. Universities keep up the constantly changing
edge of needs in industry, students gain real business related
knowledge and benefit of this after graduating, SMEs get
help and training to use technology more efficiently, and ICT
service providers have a possibility to influence on ICT
students' education to make sure that they get more
professional graduates later on.

RADMON
Contact person: aeilma@utu.fi
RADMON is a payload developed for the Aalto-1 satellite,
which is scheduled to launch in december 2014. As the name
implies, RADMON will characterize and monitor the radiation
environment of Aalto-1 during the flight. For that Radmon
has semiconductor and scintillator detectors, analog
electronics and digital logic analyzing the particle events. A
dedicated FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) is used
for continuous sampling of the AD-converted sensor data at
rate of 10 MHz. Logic separates the interesting events from
the data flow and classifies them at high speed. When
compared with traditional similar systems with analog pulse
peak storage and conversion, we expect improved
performance and much higher speed.
