Independent THE LOS ANGELES www.laindependent.com PHOTO BY GARY MCCARTHY Officials taking the fight against Hollywood gridlock underground BY JEFF HERNANDEZ SPECIAL TO THE INDEPENDENT Angelenos may finally have something to look forward to in the ongoing battle against gridlock, as the Metropolitan Transportation Agency rushes to secure the federal funds necessary to build a subway traveling through West Hollywood into Westwood or Santa Monica. With nearly 300,000 people traveling into the Westside every day throughout the region, Metro looks to build the Westside Subway Extension that will travel underground along the Wilshire Boulevard corridor. However, Metro is currently considering five possible extension alternatives. At a community meeting held last month, MTA presented the 30/10 initiative with the goal to fund and build Measure R projects in a decade instead of 30 years, as previously planned. Metro is ambitiously seeking accelerated funding from the federal government and looking into public-private partnership funding options. “Politically, it has gone from a longshot to something that is gaining traction with federal legislators and federal officials. The key to accomplishing the 30/10 plan is leveraging local dollars with federal dollars,” said West Hollywood Councilwoman Lindsey Horvath. “The current L.A. Mayor has been a great advocate for mass transit and has done a good job moving 30/10 forward. However, he is in his final term and whoever comes after him will have to continue to fight for federal support at every level.” In 2008, voter-approved Measure R was tailored to raise an estimated $40 billion over the next 30 years to help with dozens of public transportation, highway and traffic reduction projects. MTA will use the revenue to accelerate other projects that are also in the works, such as the Gold Line Foothill extension, the Green Line to Los Angeles International Airport, a north-south San Fernando Valley line and the downtown L.A. regional connector. These have the potential to SUBWAY page 3 Minority filmmakers still struggle to get through green lights As studios scale back further, festivals play an even more crucial role in bringing diversity to Hollywood. Acham said that though conditions have improved in the last 40 years, Black filmmakers still struggle to get their films made. “It is always challenging for African-American filmmakers to get funding,” Acham said. “It’s clearly helped by the Oprahs and Tyler Perrys of the world, who have their own studios and the ability to greenlight projects, but outside of that, if you are an inBLACK CAMEL PICTURES dependent or a Black filmmaker, In “Legacy,” which played last week at the American Black Film it is difficult to get black stories Festival, Idris Elba stars as an operations soldier who returns FILMMAKERS page 3 home after mysterious circumstances botch his mission. Hollywood pot clinic worker shot to death on the job FROM CITY NEWS SERVICE County coroners have released the name of a marijuana dispensary worker killed at his job, but are not yet ready to determine if that killing was related to a murder at another marijuana dispensary on the same day. Ila Ali Packman, a 39-year-old Hollywood resident, was the person found dead June 24 inside a shop called Hollywood Holistic, on El Centro Avenue near Sunset Boulevard, Coroner’s Investigator Joyce Kato said. Packman’s boss discovered the body of his employee, who was either stabbed, shot, or killed by a combination of attacks inside the cooperative, said LAPD Deputy Chief David Doan. That grisly discovery came just five hours after, and five miles away from, the murder of a security guard at Higher Path Holistic, a marijuana outlet on Sunset near Dodger Stadium in Echo Park. Matthew Butcher, a 27-year-old Los Angeles resident who was working as a security guard, was found dead there. Although information about the Hollywood killing was scant, police have said the Echo Park murder was committed when four armed men robbed the dispensary. Another employee at Higher Path was critically wounded and Police searching for gunman in slaying on St. Andrews Place Two officers responding to deadly incident crash their patrol cars at Santa Monica Boulevard and Van Ness Avenue. FROM CITY NEWS SERVICE Detectives on Wednesday were looking for a gunman who fatally shot a motorist in Hollywood, and two police officers who responded and crashed their patrol car were recovering from minor to moderate injuries. David Suarez, 20, of Hollywood, was driving south on St. Andrews Place north of Santa Monica Boulevard at about 3 p.m. Tuesday when somebody shot him, police said. One year later, seeking justice for their king The tragedy of Michael Jackson’s death still resonates among his most devoted fans, as the doctor named in his death faces an explosive trial this fall. BY OLU ALEMORU STAFF WRITER One year ago, Taaj Malik’s world collapsed with the news of Michael Jackson’s sudden death. But people often find strength in tragedy, and now the Pakistaniborn Malik is on a crusade to uncover what she considers hidden truths about Jackson’s passing last June 25. It is a quest, she says, that is inspired by a desire to bring “justice to his death.” A lifelong Jackson fan, Malik, 50, is not affiliated with any particular organization. But with nine group pages on her Facebook profile — boasting over 27,000 members — she has become something of a clearinghouse for devotees of the King of Pop, who voraciously read her virtually round-the-clock posts about their idol. “I mostly follow the conspiracy theories,” said Malik, who moved from London two years ago and now resides in Santa Ana, where she operates a housekeeping business. In conversation, she lets those is still hospitalized in critical condition, Doan said. That man’s name was not released. Doan said surveillance videotapes were missing from both locations. “Because we’re not clear on the facts of the second murder, we’re not prepared to say that these are not linked; and we’re also not prepared to say that they are linked,” Doan said Friday. “Until we get some additional information on that second murder, we have more work to do to determine whether or not these two locations have any linkage as it relates to these crimes.” Doan said both marijuana dispensaries handled large amounts of cash. Neither facility had been issued a zoning-related ceaseand-desist order by the city, Doan said, because both had registered before the moratorium on new dispensaries. Close to 50 people held a candlelight vigil for Butcher Friday evening outside the Higher Path clinic on Sunset. Butcher’s mother, local labor leader and political activist Julie Butcher, told reporters she was devastated. “He was a peaceful boy,” she said. “He would have given a robber anything that they wanted. He would never have resisted. There was no reason for him to be killed over marijuana or money. It’s absolutely senseless.” theories fly — an often-convoluted jumble that involves, alternately, everyone from the purchasers of Jackson’s fabled Neverland Ranch to record companies and Saudi royalty. “There are lots of people I can point the finger at,” she said, “but I have no proof.” Where many do see proof of wrongdoing is in the case of Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician who was charged in February with manslaughter by Los Angeles County prosecutors. Suarez was taken to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:26 p.m., police said. Authorities were looking for the shooting suspect, who was said to be in a four-door, dark gray or green sedan, a Los Angeles police sergeant said today. Two police officers responding to the shooting crashed their patrol car with several vehicles at Santa Monica and Van Ness Avenue, several blocks west of the shooting, police said. The officers in the crash were taken to a hospital. Their injuries were not life threatening, an officer with LAPD’s Media Relations said. Two small quakes put the Hills on shaky ground FROM CITY NEWS SERVICE A pair of very small earthquakes, 21 seconds apart, rattled the Hollywood Hills on Sunday. Automated seismographs operated by the USGS and local universities registered magnitude 1.6 and 1.7 quakes as they rattled the Mt. Lee area, flanking the Hollywood sign, at 8:36 a.m. The epicenters were 2 miles south-southeast, and then 2 miles south-southwest, of downtown Burbank, the USGS said. Los Angeles police said there were no phone calls reporting the quake to them. Two of the five alternatives considered are within $4.2 billion allocated for the Westside Subway Extension from the Measure R funds. “We’re currently in the environmental phase,” said Rick Jager, senior communications officer with MTA. “We’re taking look at all the elements and then once that is done our staff will make a recommendations to our board in terms of what local preferred alignments should go forward.” Alternative one will begin at Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Boulevard and run to Westwood/ UCLA. This plan considers alternative stations either at Wilshire Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard or Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. The alignment in which the train travels through Beverly Hills to its final destination has yet to be determined. The map shows various possible routes curving all over Century City at this point. Alternative two is routed nearly identical to the first path but considers an extension to the VA hospital. Alternative three extends to Santa Monica at Wilshire Boulevard and Fourth Street. However that will go beyond the adopted Measure R funding, costing nearly $5.7 billion. Alternative four will leave the extension to the VA hospital, but instead of continuing west it will go off northeast bound at the Wilshire Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard stop. With the country firmly entrenched in a recession, gone are the days when studio executives were eager to take a multimillion-dollar chance on projects that may or may not find an audience. Even filmmakers such as Melvin Van Peebles, John Singleton and Spike Lee who have found success via independent vehicles don’t have free financial reign. Acham, who teaches courses on Black film, television and pop culture, said that in such a tough marketplace, the road is even tougher for minority filmmakers. FROM CITY NEWS SERVICE Larry King, one of the most famous interviewers on television, announced Tuesday he will end his nightly CNN talk show this fall, “giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games.” King has been hosting “Larry King Live” for 25 years. In a statement that will air on his show tonight but was posted online, King said he plans to stay with CNN to host specials on national and international issues. “Twenty-five years ago I sat across this table from New York Governor Mario Cuomo for the first broadcast of ‘Larry King Live,”’ King said. “Now, decades later, I talked the guys here at CNN and I told them I would like to end ‘Larry King Live,’ the nightly show, this fall and CNN has graciously accepted, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games. “I’ll still be part of the CNN family, hosting several Larry King specials on major national and international subjects,” he said. “I’m incredibly proud that we recently made the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ for having the longest-running show with the same host in the same time slot. With this chapter closing, I’m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring, but for now, it’s time to hang up my nightly suspenders.” King, 76, made headlines earlier this year when he and his wife, Shawn, filed for divorce. But the couple have apparently since reconciled. King has been married eight times to seven women. He and his current wife have two sons, aged 11 and 10. The professor said that with studios scaling back on the number of films they make and focusing on less risky ventures such as sequels, those going the independent route have to be creative. That includes working the film festival circuit, Acham said. “Film festivals allow the filmmaker to get their work out there,” she said. “Obviously, with the rise of Sundance, people are taking a closer look at festivals, and for the independents, many are looking beyond Sundance perhaps because it has gotten so large.” One such event is the American Black Film Festival, which launched its 14th annual edition last week in Miami, Florida. Festival founder Jeff Friday said venues such as his are an integral part of the networking needed to launch the next successful filmmaker. “When you look at the independent filmmaker in general, it’s a struggling population because you are making a product outside of the resources of the mainstream, and once you make it, you are competing with films from major studios,” he said. “What we try to do is give the independent filmmaker an avenue to meet with the powers that be in Hollywood, with the hope that by exposing the Hollywood power brokers to the subset of independent film- makers we will open doors.” Such opportunities have been helpful for longtime attendees of the American Black Film Festival such as Lee Daniels, who was nominated for an Academy Award for directing the critically acclaimed film “Precious.” “The world is having a very difficult time of it and that affects everything, including our art,” said Daniels, who first came to fame as producer of “Monster’s Ball,” an independent film whose star Halle Berry became the first African-American to win an Academy Award for best actress. Daniels is being feted at this year’s festival. And this festival is not the only game in town. The website Withoutabox.com bills itself as “the world’s largest independent film community” and offers informa- tion on more than 5,000 film festivals across the world. Acham said the internet is making it possible for filmmakers from just about any continent to share their work with the world with just the click of an upload. So the next Spike Lee or Robert Townsend could just as easily be a writer or director from Africa, Europe or the Middle East. Screenwriter Rhonda Baraka said that despite the tough times independents face, the landscape is also rich with the opportunity for creativity and to break into the mainstream. “I think movies appeal to people during tough times,” she said. “By the same token, I think it appeals to us in the industry because we can create those other worlds for people to escape into.” For advertising information call us (323) 556-5720 Hollywood INDEPENDENT PAGE 4 JULY 1, 2010 After a year, Jackson fans still struggling with his death JACKSON FROM PAGE 1 Reports had Murray finding the singer in bed, not breathing, but with a pulse. He administered CPR without success and Jackson was pronounced dead after he arrived at the nearby Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. In the days after the shocking event, media stories were rife with speculation about — and criticism of — the doctor’s actions, suggesting he didn’t tell paramedics what he gave to Jackson, refused to sign a death certificate, which would have locked down the location as a crime scene and disappeared for two days. Murray, who pleaded not guilty, was released after posting $75,000 bail; shortly after, the California Medical Board issued an order preventing him from administering heavy sedatives. It has been reported that the 56-year-old Murray, who first met Jackson in Las Vegas, joined the singer’s camp in May 2009 as part of the agreement with AEG Live, the promoter of Jackson’s announced 50-date concert For advertising information call us marathon at London’s 02 Arena. There was also speculation that when Murray went to work for Jackson at a salary of $150,000 a month — reportedly paid by AEG — the physician was facing debts of nearly $435,000. Murray is now awaiting trial, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 23. Last week Jackson fan Caleb Davis, 52, who recently moved to L.A. after spending the past 20 years in Berkeley, turned up early in the morning hoping to get into the public gallery for a hearing on the status of Murray’s medical license. A judge ruled last week that Murray can continue to practice medicine in California. “I think Michael was the greatest entertainer that ever lived and I blame Murray for his death,” said Davis. “Last year I was at work in a medical facility when I came back from lunch and someone said Michael died. But we had a colleague called Michael and I thought they were referring to him … until I realized who it was, and I couldn’t believe it.” That sentiment goes double for Malik. “I’ve just thrown myself into working for justice from fans, it’s little wonder that Jackson’s death has brought unimaginable riches to the late entertainer’s estate, which is overseen by co-executors John Branca and John McClain. According to a story published last week in Billboard magazine, in the 12 months since Jackson’s death, the estate has generated deals worth $783 million. Incredibly, that figure does not include earnings from the ultra-lucrative licensing and branding of Jackson’s image, from which megastars can command between 70 and 90 percent of the profits. What the millions do account for are CD sales, the box office and DVD sales from the documentary “This Is It,” key parts of Jackson’s publishing empire and a new Sony deal that funnels money to the estate for years’ worth of future releases and projects. “He was such an iconic figure PHOTO BY BILL JONES around the world and his death Michael Jackson, who died on June 25, 2009, still inspires was such a shocking event that extreme devotion from legions of fans across the planet. fans and people who worked for Michael,” she said. “I only night. In addition, an all-encompassing media blitz will include televised tributes at the BET Awards, on E!
