“What we have seen and heard we declare to you, so that you and we
together may share in a common life, that life we share with the Father and
His son Jesus Christ” 1 John 1:3 (NEB). True Christian community is more
than something we may or may not choose to enjoy . . . it is the very life of
God made visible to us! And we always need more of it!
Save–the–Date
Growing the True Community—Week 3
JULY
The ancient world rarely associated the word
"love" with their "gods." Because, to their way of
thinking, "love" implied a desire or need. And to
desire or need something means you must lack
that thing in yourself. And how could a "god" lack
anything? But the early followers of Jesus saw in
Him an overflowing of a completely different kind
of love, one that did not come out of lack, but out of
fullness—so much so that they needed a new word
to define it.

Last year, we were blessed with the opportunity to
spend time with Don Renzo Bonetti in Bovolone,
Italy. We learned so much while we were there
about using radical hospitality to build a more
open, welcoming community, and we saw firsthand
the way this type of community naturally leads to
evangelism.

AMORE
An Amore Group Story (continued from front page)
Since that trip, we have been excited to watch Truro’s growing collaboration with
Don Renzo, and we are now blessed to be leading our own Amore Group.
Our group meets on Sunday nights, and we look forward to it every week. Amore
Groups, based on the CFE groups developed by Don Renzo, use a simple format
that makes them ideal for believers, but, at the same time, comfortable for nonbelievers and seekers. Each week, there is a time for worship, thanksgiving and
sharing, a short teaching, and a time for prayer. The meetings help keep us
focused on what Jesus is doing in our lives and on what we are doing for Jesus
and others. We can already see the deep, caring relationships that are developing
among the group members. We also love watching the way the group has helped
bring others closer to Jesus. We have a young man in the group who became a
Christian during the Alpha Course a year ago. Just last week, he told us that he
has wanted ever since to feel closer to Jesus and to experience the kind, caring,
open community he felt during Alpha. He said that the Amore Group has given
him both of those things.
We encourage all of you to check out an Amore Group. If you’ve been through
the Alpha Course, you will immediately recognize the same type of Spirit-filled
community, and, if not, you will be in for a new experience that we know you
will love. More importantly, we encourage you to invite friends and neighbors
to come with you. Several groups are now up and running, and the doors will
be open!
A Taste of Amore
Sunday, Jul 27 | 12:00 - 2:00 pm | Common Grounds | bit.ly/1l8Cp74
Come experience the structure of an Amore Group at this free lunch, hosted by
some of our Amore Couples, in Common Grounds after the late service. It’s a
great way to see firsthand how Amore Groups are home-based churches that
teach us how to build community, be missional, and see Jesus in everyday life.
This event is open to 40 people. Food is provided. Sign up on The City,

MISSIONS
Treasure One Ugandan Child:
Compassion Sunday Returns!
by Dr. Mary McDonald
In 1995 our daughter, Ashby, started in
Truro Preschool. I dutifully attended the
Christmas program with my husband,
Jack. Intrigued that the church school
actually shared the love of Christ at their
program, we started going to Truro and
became members.
Having volunteered with Compassion
after living in Kenya, we were excited to
help Diane Hutchins with the incredible
Compassion program, Treasure One
Ugandan Child, an Outreach initiative
supporting
Truro’s
long
standing
relationship with the Diocese of Kigezi.
From 1997 to 2005 (and continuing), over
2,000 children have been sponsored by
Truro parishioners, their families, and
other churches who loved this tangible
way to involve their children and support
their parenting values.
In 1999, I went to veterinary school. Then
we moved to Bolivia, South America with
SAMS, Serving Anglican Missionaries and
Senders, as Truro missionaries.
Now we are back in the US, and I am
working on Gospel goats projects in
Uganda. Last fall, I saw the huge need of
the Bobi (Ugandan Diocese) Anglican
Church school for a Compassion project.
Ugandan Bishop Johnson and the local
Compassion staff agreed!
So, we would like to continue to partner
with Truro to reach both the already
established Kigezi Diocese Compassion
projects - and to begin to treasure the
Bobi children as well! Today, there will
be a Compassion information table. On
Sundays July 20 and 27, child packets
will be available for sponsorship. Please
prayerfully consider the $38 a month
opportunity to invest in a child’s life.
Thank you, Truro for your prayers and
support over the years!

Praying in the Kingdom
True Community (continued)
(continued)
They took a little used Greek word (agape) and gave it new meaning. Agape love:
self-sacrificing, self-giving love, love that is not dependent on our own desires
or needs, or indeed on the merits of the object of that love, but overflows out
of God’s own fullness! It was something new to the world’s understanding. And,
to many people, it still is! Our culture is so deeply confused about love, and is
increasingly turning back to an ancient understanding. . . namely, seeing love as
primarily about self-fulfillment, rather than as an act of self-giving!
So we are going to do just that:
• Let’s pray for revival—for our families,
our church and for us!
• Let’s pray for a fresh outpouring of
God’s Holy Spirit this Fall
• Let’s pray for our community and our
nation
• Let’s pray many would come to know
Christ and the fullness of His life
through Truro and its ministries this
Fall.
• Let’s pray for the Fall Alpha course and
for new Amore groups starting.
Join us every Wednesday in August to
pray, worship + listen.
In this week’s passage (1 John 2:3-11), the author affirms that self-sacrificing,
agape love is the heart of True Community, and it is the "new commandment"
that Jesus gave us all at the Last Supper! Conversely, he says that hatred of our
brothers and sisters in Christ demonstrates our darkness and blindness . . . the
very opposite of the self-sacrificial, self-giving love that so illuminated the ancient
world through the early church!
Our world desperately needs to see agape love being practiced in a True
Community, a real "nuts and bolts" context, so that we can understand the nature
of God’s own sacrificial, self-giving love. Otherwise, when the church talks about
"love," or a "God who is love," how will anyone know what we mean?
