The Iron Trail, Kristinehamn A hiking trail in the path of the iron Photos frontpage Christina Skan, Mats Öhman, John Persson, Pernilla Andersson History The background of the hiking trail is the historic importance of iron to Kristinehamn: it was the route taken by the iron that resulted in a town being formed just here. The Iron Trial follows the paths and tracks that were used, maybe as far back as at the end of the 15th century, when the iron was transported southwards from Värmland’s mining district down to the coast of Lake Vänern and the settlement of Bro, which became Kristinehamn when it was granted its municipal charter in 1642. King Gustav Vasa realized the strategic importance of the mining district and ordered a transport route to be created but it was his son, Duke Karl, who actually constructed it. The trail stretches from Hytte on Hyttsjön lake to the centre of Kristinehamn. Illustrations by the local artist Kjell Sundberg, posted on several information boards, bring the history of the trail alive. When the Norsbäcken canal was built at the end of the 1630s the iron was taken by water all the way to Sjöändan, on the Bergsjön lake, and the Iron Trail lost its function as a transport route. In the period 1689-1850 the world market price of iron was decided at Kristinehamn’s Fastingsmarknad, the market that was held every Lent (the time of fasting). From the end of the 18th century and for the whole century that followed, it was from Kristinehamn that the iron mined in Bergslagen was exported. Nature The hiking trail is 30 km long and passes th- rough a landscape of historical interest. Taking you through varied countryside the trail passes small ponds and lakes, crosses marshland, woodland and fields, and joins up with a country lane. The trees in the surrounding forests are of varying ages; they are mostly coniferous but are interspersed with deciduous trees. On your journey you pass several historic sites, ancient remains and places of interest. You may encounter animals, birds, butterflies, deer and elk; in the autumn, you can pick all the berries and mushrooms you like. The flora is both rich and beautiful along the roadside on the stretches that pass by open farmland, for example just north of Niklasdam. Stages Hytte - Bergsjötorpet Medium 5 km, 1.5-2 hrs An easy stretch on dirt and forest tracks. The challenge is the hill at Varrvikshöjden, which requires a little more effort. You follow parts of Norsbäckens kanal, the old transport canal that was opened at the end of the 1630s. It was used to take the iron to Sjöändan at the southern end of the Bergsjön lake, which you can also see. Just before you reach the homestead Bergsjötorpet, you pass by many magnificent oak trees. Niklasdamm – Älvbron (Älv Bridge) Medium 4 km, 1.5-2 hrs You begin the walk on a tractor road, which doubles as a bridle path, passing agricultural countryside and a ruined cottage at Bråne, continue about 1 km before you swing off into the forest and follow the Varnan river. The forest is mature here and a little dark, yet it is still an enjoyable experience to follow the river. Take a seat on the bench placed right in the middle of the forest, enjoy the peace and listen to the murmuring water of the Varnen. Perhaps you will see some wildlife passing by the river. If there is a lot of rain this stretch can be quite wet and then you can continue on the rough tack to the Älvbron instead of swinging into the forest and following the river. South of the bridge (Älvbron) you can see the remains of an ironworks. There is a picnic spot here with tables Photo: Richard Hagdahl Photo: Bengt Salander Go for a walk on land of historical importance, where Duke Karl established a trail along which iron was transported. The eastern Värmland and Bergslagen areas have played an important role in Sweden’s development: it was here that iron ore was mined, refined and transported to Lake Vänern to be sent out into the world. The political reason behind this was to break the German trading monopoly of the time. Today, the trail is an authorized Värmland trail that offers hikers a safe, challenging and informative walk. The Iron Trail is selected to be one of Sweden’s ten best walking trails. Pelargonmuseum Illustration: Kjell Sjundberg A nature trail full ov diversity and history Bergsjötorpet - Niklasdamm Medium 5 km, 1.5-2 hrs To begin with you walk mostly through old forest. After some kilometres you arrive at Ljustjärnen, a picnic spot offering a lovely view. Here there is a campfire site, a windbreak and a place to set up some tents and a dry toilet a few hundred meters from the picnic spot. The trail goes on over Bromossen and the 200-meter long footbridge and continues across a large clearing with an avenue of high tree stumps. At Eskilstorp you will find a well-preserved charcoal kiln and the remains of an old charcoal hut where charcoal was made for use in the local factory. There is also a bench here where you can rest your legs before you continue to Niklasdamm. After a short walk along a country road the trail swings off into the woods along by a stone wall, past a little dam which functions as a water reservoir and through the remains of a former English Park with terraces and stone steps. Once at the manor house and the large pond nearby, there is a headland with a comfortable rest area. In the area you can see traces of the iron works, saw mill and a pond that supplied the mill with water. Please respect the fact that the manor house itself is a private residence. On the café wall is a water tap where you can fill up your water flask. In a special glass geranium greenhouse there is a geranium museum with over 400 species of geranium. Stop a while and taste geranium cake at Niklasdam’s café. Photo: Lars-Peter Jansson Photo: Mats Öhman barges, which at one time transported iron along the Bergslag’s Canal waterway system. You can also choose to start from Niklasdams Garden Centre – where there is a café, market garden and a geranium museum. You can get here in your own car. Much of the history of iron has been preserved here too and on a headland you will find probably the finest picnic spot on the trail. Other possible starting points are Kristinehamn’s guest harbour, Fornborgen (ancient castle) and Älvbron, which you can get to by bus and a short walk. Varnumsviken Älvbron - Gustafsvik Medium (The section up to the hill fort: difficult) 9 km, 3-4 hrs. The stretch between Älvbron and the Fornborgen hill fort is a wonderful woodland walk. It passes a modern stone quarry and a disused one; there is a dry toilet here. The path then leads up a hill, at the top of which are the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. Take a seat on the bench here for a well-deserved rest. A cattle tunnel takes you under the E18 highway and past a “tea spring”, where it is claimed that Georg Adlersparre found water that was good enough for making his tea with! A short detour from the trail takes you to the grounds of the old manor where Georg Adlersparre once lived. Gustafsvik – Kristinehamn’s Guest Harbour Easy 7 km, 2-3 hrs An easy-going stage with walks/cycle-path and town tour. The path stretches alongside coastal meadows and a bird sanctuary by Varnumsviken bay, passing Österviks chapel and town farm, where at certain times of year there is a café open. The walk continues through the historic Marieberg area and Galgviken bay. Kristinehamn’s Art Museum and Kafferian Café are located here, serving lunch and offering homemade pastries. You can also find bed & breakfast, hotels and hostels in the area. Then follows the town tour through Kristinehamn’s harbour area and past a modern multi-modal transport terminal, which handles goods from parts of Sweden and the rest of the world. Once at Kristinehamn’s guest harbour and camper stand you will encounter the sailing ship Christine af Bro, a Boeier yacht. This type of vessel transported pig-iron and bar-iron to Gothenburg, where it was shipped out into the rest of the world. The boeier makes regular trips on Lake Vänern. In the guest harbour there is a hard stand for campers, shower, toilet, simple café, Thai restaurant and an adventure mini golf course. Many Alternatives You are free to choose your starting point for the walk even though the official and historic start is at Hytte. Many walkers choose to take the bus or in summer the train to Nässundet’s station and from here walk the 700 metres south to Hytte. At Nässundet there is a woodfired oven bakery and a café that is mentioned in the White Guide Café. There are also camper stands, a guest harbour, market stalls and accommodation options in the area. And you can buy new-baked bread and freshly brewed coffee for your walk. Under the water by the stone quay next to the guest piers, you can glimpse parts of the old areas, WCs and dry toilets. At the Ljustjärnen pond there is a wind break and a campfire site. The facilities at each place are all marked on the map. Drinking water is available at Nässundet’s station, Niklasdam’s garden centre and Kristinehamn’s guest harbour. Accessibility The Iron Trail is well marked and can be fol- lowed without a map. A map is, however, useful as it contains information and ideas that can help you plan your hike. There are around 800 marked wooden posts, arrows and signposts, several wooden walkways and bridges, a number of wooden picnic tables and seats as well as information boards with historical information. The posts and trees along the trail are marked with orange paint; in Kristinehamn, it is marked with orange plastic bands tied around lamp posts, with blue/white arrows showing the way. Be observant at road crossings, and make sure you don’t lose sight of the trail markings! As a rule, you do need to have walking boots to walk the Iron Trail. In dry periods casual shoes will suffice. Along some stretches there is high grass but you can always get around it. The vegetation is cut back some/several times a year. Trails in Värmland The Iron Trail is one of several hiking trails in Värmland that is classified as an official Värmland Trail. The trail meets a number of require- Photo: John Persson and benches.
