As in past years, you may bring the bread and drink for your Thanksgiving meal to church for a blessing which will be given during the mass. By: Ken Thevenet We are still arriving, and the church is alive with the anticipation of another time to spend in the presence of God and the community of which we are a part. We are welcomed and a familiar ritual begins, leading up to a prayer. Then one of us rises, walks to a position at the ambo, and awaits the silence of listening. The readings begin: “A reading from…” Please note that there will be no daily masses at St. Aloysius on Thursday, November 28 or Friday, November 29. We are the many voices of our Lord. He speaks through us in the Word that has changed so little over time. We are blest with the gift of speech and the courage to stand before you and speak this Word as if we had written it ourselves. For a few moments we let the Word flow through us in the hope that some of you will find your hope, some comfort or a new conviction in the Word as others have found so many times in the past. This is not about us. It is the Word. God speaks through us. We do prepare. We are first trained to do this. We have workbooks that provide us the guidance we need to deliver these words. We are given guidance on parts of the reading that require emphasis and parts that should be read more quietly, more slowly. We are encouraged to pause, allowing time for reflection. We are given context, context in terms of the time or the intent of the words as they were written. Memorial Crosses Beginning with November 1, the Feast of All Saints, St. Aloysius Church will place a Memorial Cross in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for each person buried from the parish in the coming year. These crosses will hang in the chapel until next All Saints Day, when they will be given to family members at a special liturgy where we will remember all those who have died. During the week before we read, we prepare. We read and reread all readings and all the information the workbook provides. We pray. Prayer is a vital component in the process. It is separate from our daily prayers. Readers’ prayers are for guidance and for God’s help. Some readings are familiar; some are particularly difficult. We pray for the God to stand with us as the Word flows through us in these moments. Again, this is not about us. It is the Word. God speaks through us. Then we pause and conclude: “The Wor d of the Lord.” To sign up for this ministry or any other ministry at St. Aloysius you may do so online at: http://www.aloysiusbr.org/ministrysignup.html November 10 & 17, 2013 6 32nd & 33rd Sunday in OT For many years St. Aloysius Parish has come together during the Advent Season with our traditional Giving Tree. As our focus turns to Christmas and Christmas shopping, the Giving Tree provides a way for parishioners to help those in need. St. Aloysius parishioners and students have worked to design ornaments that represent each of the particular ministries that make up the Giving Tree. You can choose an ornament from the baskets at the side doors of the church from November 23 through December 7 OR until the ornaments run out. Please pay particular attention to the items requested and the deadline for your gift to be returned to the church. As you return your gift, we ask that you go to the Nativity, grab a handful of straw and place it in the manger to prepare the manger bed for Baby Jesus. Please keep your ornament as a reminder of our parish effort to help those in need. And please remember to pray for all those in need this holiday season. Please return your UNWRAPPED gifts by the requested due date (December 7/8 or December 14/15) TO THE DESIGNATED BOXES in the BACK of the church. Brochures, located at the side doors of the church, detail the 11 ministries that are a part of this year's Giving Tree. Please take a moment to read about the various groups who need your help, then grab an ornament of your choice! Throughout the Advent season we will gradually prepare the manger bed for Baby Jesus as gifts are returned. On Christmas Eve the lights of the Nativity scene will be illuminated and Baby Jesus will be placed in the manger, becoming a shining symbol to our community of the Christian love that we celebrate. Please contact Arline Mistretta at 769-2433 or smistretta2@cox.net with any questions. Merry Christmas! This year’s giving tree will include the following organizations: Angel - Prison Fellowship (Children of Prisoners) Dove - Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge Holy Grill Kids Heart - Joseph Home Residents Madonna & Child -Women in Crisis Pregnancies Butterfly- Myriam’s House Bishop’s Hat -Bishop Ott Shelter House - Habitat for Humanity Fleur de lis -Boys Hope/Girls Hope Wreath - Developmental Disabilities Lamb - St. Vincent de Paul – Sweet Dreams Cross- Cenikor Join the high school youth group on a trip to Walt Disney World!
