Hopefully many of you can go with us to the Welborn Museum in April. We will be car pooling so driving your classic is not necessary. Please send an “RSVP” to Mike Walling so he can get an idea of our headcount. We’d like to arange for the musuem to give us a nice welcome. Plan now for the BOPC at the Marriott May 3 & 4. The Friday Night Parking Lot Barbecue should be Great Fun!!! Mike Walling had a parking spot set up for Denny, Bob ~John Link and me when we got to the show. We had been there a short while, when the DJ announced that someone wanted to know where the SEGTOA meeting was to be held. We found that Bill White, who had been a member for years, but had never been able to attend a meeting, was trying to find us. As it turned out, we had finally brought the meeting to him. There were a number of VERY NICE GTO’s at the show. A ’69 GTO won one of the top 25 trophies, Mike Walling’s ’67 GTO won a trophy, and a ’65 GTO won the “Best of GM” trophy. A good day for GTOs! Dallas Petrey was seen roaming around without even one of his GTOs. Other awards included best motorcycle, best import, and best of each manufacturer. Kenny Simpson had his great Firebird at the show. I used my I-phone to help navigate Denny’s Pontiac to Monroe but forgot to use it to take pictures of the show. I must be a guy! 2 Tim Wellborne Musclecar Museum For those leaving from the Atlanta area we will be meeting off of I-20 at the Waffle House located at Exit 46B from I-20 W. Meeting time at the Waffle House is 9:30am. From there it’s roughly 2hrs to the museum. I moved from Texas to northern Virginia in April or so, and that’s when I picked up the GTO in Indiana. The condition was as expected; I had seen dozens of pictures of the car, and had it inspected by an acquaintance who was wellversed in GTOs, so there were no surprises. I trailered the car home from Indiana and it went straight into the garage at the house I was renting in Woodbridge, VA. I drove the GTO sparingly after I arrived in Virginia; mostly because it was not running great and the brakes were iffy. I finally cleared off a weekend to tune up the engine and rebuild the brakes and that’s when it happened - - the more work I did, the more I realized that the car needed and deserved better than just a set of spark plugs and new wheel cylinders, pads, and shoes. The next thing I knew, I had the engine and transmission out, the interior completely out of the car, and the body off the frame. Initially I planned to do the frame-off restoration myself, but other projects were taking up my time, so I eventually took it to Darrell Davidson at Supercar Creations in Norton, Ohio. Darrell and I had done business in the past, and I had been to his shop and saw that he had completed some extremely nice cars. Darrell is also a hardcore Pontiac guy, and specializes in 68-72 GTOs - - he recently restored his 1969 Judge and it was awarded the Concours Gold pedigree by the GTOAA. Darrell also owns a 1969 RAIV Judge and a 1971 455 HO Judge. Speaking of Judges, Darrell also judges GTOs for the GTOAA, so he’s certainly familiar with these cars. Moving on to the drivetrain, the engine in the GTO when I bought it was a basic 1970s era 400. It was fresh and had a Ram Air IV cam, but it really was not anything special, and most of the RAIV specific items were missing. However, while I was still in Iraq, I had located a 1970 GTO Ram Air IV intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, and pair of unmolested Ram Air IV cylinder heads in Texas. The parts were all in wonderful shape, and apparently had been sitting inside in a closet for a few decades. I paid a fair price for these items and picked them up shortly after I returned in February. (Continued on page 5) 4 Ok, now we’re back to talking about the engine that is actually installed in the car now. The block is a The engine is built using a correct 1970 RAIV block correct 1970 Ram Air IV 4 speed 4 bolt main block, that I bought in 2008, but it is not the original code WW, part number 9799115. By Mike Daugherty This car is no “Trailer Queen.” We have driven from Connecticut (our summer home) to POCI Most articles about people’s Pontiacs usually go into conventions in Cleveland, Gaithersburg, MD, Moline great detail about engine upgrades and and Springfield, IL, Buffalo, Sturbridge, MA, and modifications that were done to improve their Greenville, SC. We also drove it to the GTOAA in vehicles. Unfortunately, this isn’t one of them. Saratoga, NY. I was one of the Popular Vote Tech Inspectors and had a blast doing it! In May of 1971 my yet to be bride strolled into the local Plymouth dealership to purchase a convertible. In 1990 my wife officially put my name on the She was disappointed to learn that it was too late to registration. No, it wasn’t because she thought that I order a convertible MOPAR. The salesman was some wizard mechanic. She wanted her own suggested the local Pontiac dealer. This was the vintage Pontiac to drive. I was floored when she beginning of a journey that continues to this day. said she wanted a 59 Bonneville. I thought to myself We still have a 71 Le Mans Sport convertible. It has “who would want to drive that Ark.” Needless to say, remained pretty much the way she ordered it. Ok, I the quest began. said I wasn’t going to talk about modifications, but I Many stories of searches detail the long journeys am. The constantly broken AM radio was replaced and many miles to get the right car. Ours began in with an AM/FM from my Skylark. The poverty the next town on the other side of the river. A local hubcaps were replaced with Rally IIs and the single Pontiac dealer had gone out of business many years exhaust had to go. A buddy of mine did the body ago but his sister was still driving her 59 Bonneville over in 1992 in his garage, but it is not a frame off. It as a daily driver. She had decided to sell it but has over 152,000 miles on it. wouldn’t advertise it. When she was done driving for As the late John Sawruck once said “If it’s a Pontiac the day she would park it in front of her house and and it’s not leaking, check the fluids. It’s probably put the “For Sale” sign on it. We began to cruise the empty” Well, at 149,000+ miles I decided the rear streets looking for this elusive car. After a month of main seal needed to be replaced. For the first time, this futile search, we decided to take a break. It was the engine was removed. The bottom end was done Labor Day weekend and some friends wanted to go along with timing chain, water pump, etc. fishing at Congomond Lakes. We were on our way Amazingly, the crank did not need work and the when 3 miles from the house we spotted a 59 sitting bearings almost looked good enough to keep. It on a flatbed trailer! Stars & Cars Can you name this Star? The answer is on the last page of this month’s Tiger Tales! The owner of the house explained that he and his son picked it up in the Bronx, NY from a lady that was donating it to a local guide dog foundation. It was to be auctioned off at the car show. We were already registered to attend the show so everything was falling in place. I returned to see the car several times. It was a totally original 70,000 mile car. The engine and the clock were seized from sitting for 14 years but everything else including the Wonderbar Radio worked like the day it left the factory. (Continued on page 8) 7 A Tale of Two Pontiacs (Continued from page 7) And now for the rest of the story, the 389 was brought back to life, and the mundane things that needed to be done from all of those years of sitting were complete. She was ready to roll. We have driven it over 33,000 miles since we bought it. I call it our economy car because it is a real highway cruiser and consistently gets over 20 MPG on the highway. (I wish I could say that about the 71.) The 71 was shipped to our home in Woodbine, GA in Dec. 2012. We haven’t driven it much since we’ve been here. There is so much to do in a new home. The ‘59 remains in cold hibernation in Connecticut. It will join us someday in the warm and friendly south. E15—A Response from Senator Saxby Chambliss The problems associated with E15 fuel must really be a hot topic lately. Articles have appeared in Hagerty, Hemmings, AAA, various enthusiast magazanies and was even spotlighted in Tiger Tales last month. Recently, Oldsmobile club member Linda Brewster took the time to contact Senator Saxby Chambliss regarding the ethanol content in gasoline. Below is the response she received: Dear Mrs. Brewster: Thank you for contacting me regarding blends of ethanol in gasoline. Your taking time to write me is appreciated. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had capped the ethanol content in gasoline for all uses at 10% (E10). However, in October 2010, EPA issued a partial waiver for the use of 15% ethanol in gasoline (E15) in model year (MY) 2007 and later passenger cars and light trucks. On January 21, 2011, EPA expanded the partial waiver for E15 use to include MY 2001-2006 light-duty vehicles. Taken together, the two waivers allow, but do not require, E15 to be introduced into use in MY2001 and newer light-duty vehicles if conditions for mitigating misfueling and ensuring fuel quality are met. EPA is in the process of completing work on regulations that would provide a more practical means of meeting the conditions. On February 14, 2013, Senator Wicker of Mississippi introduced S. 344, which was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. As it is written, this bill would prohibit the EPA Administrator from approving the introduction of gasoline containing more than 10 percent ethanol blend. Currently, no action has been taken on S. 344; however, should this issue come before the Senate for debate, I will keep your thoughts in mind. I understand your concerns with the effects that increasing the ethanol blend level beyond the current 10 percent threshold may have on engines that rely on these fuels, and I remain committed to ensuring ethanol blends do not compromise the safety and performance of these engines. In the past, I have opposed efforts to increase the blend level due to concerns about its effects on engine warranties and safety issues. However, as our continuing dependence on foreign oil threatens our national security, I believe that all domestic sources of energy should be considered.
