They came through a leader, Moses, who was once plucked from the Nile River and was now herding his father-in-law’s sheep in the land of Goshen. The bush that burned but was not consumed shows us that God is inexhaustible mystery. Moses’ awe and deference are mixed with a touching conversational tone as he seeks to learn God’s name. And God sweetly responds. The somewhat abstract “I AM” distinguishes the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob from the minor gods in the territory who “are not.” They are helpless, powerless, and useless. Moses is to step out into an amazing future, and God will be there with outstretched arm. Just go and see, God seems to say. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Celebrated with his oftrecommended “tenderness,” the sacrament is “a source of true interior peace,” says Francis, enabling people “to touch the grandeur of God’s mercy with their own hands” (Misericordiae Vultus, 17). In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus warns us against judging others. Focus instead, Jesus says, on deepening—or restoring—our own relationship with God, for during this Lenten springtime that Master Gardener can use even life’s manure (the parable’s “fertilizer”) to coax fresh fruit from a tree that seems hopelessly barren—us! Parishes preparing catechumens may choose John’s Gospel, which likewise cautions against judging. Imagine what the Samaritan woman’s lifelong neighbors thought of her multiple relationships. But by discovering Jesus, then sharing her good news— and Jesus—with those very neighbors, she whom they had probably judged quite sinful became instead their evangelist and “missionary of mercy.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ash Wednesday is not observed by Eastern Christians, perhaps because, at least in Orthodox practice, weekdays are not proper days for the Divine Liturgy. Typically, “Great Lent” has a bit of a prelude. On “Meatfare Sunday” the faithful have their last chance to eat meat for the entire period of Great Lent. A week later, “Cheesefare Sunday” has dairy on the menu for the last time until Pascha (Easter). At twilight on Cheesefare Sunday, officially called “Sunday of Forgiveness,” the church gathers for “Forgiveness Vespers.” The faithful identify with Adam and Eve, forgiving one another in order to experience God’s forgiveness. The desire to set aside all bitterness, and to achieve har- mony and reconciliation in the family and with one’s neighbors gives a remarkable energy to the transition into the days of penitence. At the end of the vespers liturgy, the décor of the church is changed to reflect the new season. How is your Lenten fast going? Imagine the Eastern tradition. No meat, no fish, no dairy, no wine or oil. Some traditions permit vegetable oil; everyone goes without olive oil. Happily, strict fasting is not permitted on the Sabbath or the Lord’s Day, so on Saturday and Sunday the fast is somewhat mitigated, and wine and oil are allowed. If the Feast of the Annunciation falls during Great Lent, then fish may be served. Once one chooses to be a disciple of Christ, Stewardship is not an option. Third Sunday of Lent The Lord is kind and merciful! As disciples of Christ we sit at his feet to learn about God our Father. Through the story of Moses we learn that God listens to his children and wants them to be free from slavery. St. Paul explains that through Moses our ancestors were baptized in the cloud and the sea. Some of the Israelites did not accept the kindness and mercy of the Lord and perished in the desert. During Lent we consider the love of the Father revealed by his son while Jesus reminds us that the absence of suffering in our lives is not an indication that we are sinless. May the mercy of the Father be poured upon us and may we gratefully share his mercy with one another. THIS WEEK AT ST. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one's own needs. Eating between meals is not allowed although fluids may be taken. (Canon 1252) Abstinence binds all persons who have completed their 14th birthday, unless prevented by poor health. On days of abstinence during Lent, the consumption of meat of mammals or fowl is not allowed. The Church strongly encourages the observance of Friday abstinence throughout the year, but failure to do so is not regarded as sinful. (Canon 1252) Penitential Days: The divine law binds all the Christian faithful to do penance each in his or her own way. In order for all to be united among themselves by some common observance of penance, however, penitential days are prescribed on which the Christian faithful devote themselves in a special way to prayer, perform works of piety and charity, and deny themselves by fulfilling their own obligations more faithfully and especially by observing fast and abstinence… (Canon 1249). The penitential days and times in the universal Church are every Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent (Canon 1250). DIRECTION The great thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are going. —Oliver Wendell All ACTS sisters are invited to gather for prayer and fellowship the first Saturday of each month. OUTREACH ARCHDIOCESE Society of St. Vincent de Paul Third Sunday of Lent Lent is a call not just to “give up something.” More importantly, it is a call to give something for the poor. Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the church doorbell. They are, in effect, ringing your doorbell. In the month of February, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist families by providing food, and funds for utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You! The pantry is in need of these items: 24oz of oil 24oz of syrup 24oz of ketchup 3oz of mayo 15oz mixed fruit St. Mark’s Criminal Justice Ministry Northeast Senior Assistance (NESA) is in dire need of more volunteer drivers to take clients to doctor appointments and to grocery shop. As our community ages, the demand for our services increases and we are already overworking those volunteers on our current roster. With United Way funding we have started a television campaign with our sister agencies, and together we are called: Drive A Senior SA. If you know someone who has extra time on their hands who might be able to drive a person once a week or once a month, please tell them about NESA and send them our way. It’s just like taking a family member. If you are concerned about gas, don’t worry. Mileage is reimbursed. It is truly a fulfilling experience to be able to give back to the community and pay it forward…take a chance and try it out! Call (210) 967-6372 for more info. If you have not made your commitment, it is not too late. Pledge cards, envelopes and pencils are available in the Sunday office. Once completed, you may either turn your envelope in to the church office or put it in a collection basket. Every gift is very important. Thank you for your generosity. Ministries in Action MONTHLY MEETINGS 2nd Tuesday of the Month Christopher Hall | Room 102 If you’re looking for a way to serve your fellow man, or if you’re just curious, come and join us. All are welcome. United in Mission We have been there. We can help. Weekly AA Meeting Schedule Monday & Thursday (women only - closed book study) 12pm | Christopher Hall | Rm 201 For further information, call Terri at (210) 213-8362 or the AA Help-Line at (210) 828-6235. Through the ministries funded by the Archbishop’s Appeal, many lives are touched and transformed each year, like the lives of three young siblings, ages 8 years old and younger, who had been removed from their home and were in dire need of a safe place to spend the night. CPS had difficulty placing the children all together. After everything they had been through, it was essential for these children to at least have a warm bed to provide them some comfort during their difficult time. At St. PJ's they were able to get a good night's sleep and much needed care in their emergency shelter until they could be placed in a loving home with caregivers who were well-suited to care for and support all three siblings. They are now thriving in their forever home thanks to the shelter and placement services St. PJ's provides. COMMUNITY & SERVICE Have you borrowed a Pyx from the Liturgy Office? A pyx is used to carry the Blessed Sacrament to individuals who are sick at home or in a hospital. If you have borrowed a pyx and no longer taking Holy Communion to the sick, please return it to the Liturgy Office. Thank you. Knights of Columbus #7613 VIP Events March 1: First Degree Ceremony 7pm, Christopher Hall March 2: CHOC Meeting & Fish Fry Prep 7pm, Christopher Hall Special Thanks Dear Father Kevin, Deacon Steve, Deacon Gil, & the prayerful parishioners of St. Mark, I always knew that prayer works. God is stronger than we know, and holds us in the palm of His hand. I recently became very ill with pneumonia, and had to be hospitalized for six weeks. I did not know what the future held. As a result of my illness, and in my recovery, I have learned three things: First, I had no idea how many people cared about me and about my family. The blessing and love of this community served as the face of God throughout this ordeal. I cannot thank you all enough for your prayers, love, and kindness. Next, I always knew my family loved me, but I never knew how much. Thank you for all the time and effort and love you have shown me. From the bottom of my heart, I love you more. Last, I have known faith, but now my faith is stronger and deeper. I learned that prayer is a powerful defense, in everyday life and in the face of death. God is always present, and all we need to do is ask for His help. Again, I cannot thank you all enough for your prayers and love. This community has been a wonderful blessing to me and to my family. Thank you, Nieves Gonzalez III March 5: Monthly Holy Rosary 4:30pm, Main Sanctuary Legends of the Golden Oldies Musical Fundraiser Sun., March 6 | 2:30 p.m. Josephine Theatre Tickets $25 Legends of the Golden Oldies features music from the 50's and 60's. The Work of Mary (known as the Focolare) Spirituality of Unity is based on living Jesus' prayer in our daily lives. One way to do this is by putting the Gospel into practice one verse at a time. This is done by living a verse of scripture given monthly in the Word of Life and sharing its impact on one's life. St. Mark’s Catholic School provides a nurturing environment in a caring and positive atmosphere to create a warm and happy place for children to learn. As we bridge the gap from home to school, we guide children to a continued good self-image while building social skills in a school setting. Each child is respected as an individual with his or her own timetable and learning style. Through listening, questioning and making choices, the child will learn to enjoy the process of learning and find joy in his or her own achievements. St. Mark’s Pre-School fosters an “open door” policy and welcomes parents to visit the classroom and the office. CALL Kim HICKS at (210) 494-9282 for more information and to take a tour of our school.
