In May you need to create your own fun, so last Friday I accepted an invite from
the ANZ to have breakfast and listen to a talk by their Chief Economist, Cameron
Bagrie. In between topics that included rock stars, groupies, boy bands and the
Kardashian’s, a recurring theme was “New Zealand Inc.”
New Zealand Inc. is the sum of all the country’s parts. The brand and the business of
being one complete New Zealand. After finishing breakfast with a full stomach and
plenty of food for thought, I headed to the Queenstown Resort College for a bit of
learning. Learning about this district with QRC’s Queenstown Ambassador course.
This is all about “Queenstown Inc.” Our brand, our collective business and how the
individual can contribute by having a basic knowledge of the area and a willingness
to share it with others.
It is a positive trait of Queenstown Inc. that most of its ‘parts’ work together more
than they work against one another. This collective cooperation gives us a huge
advantage in the national and international market place, with our brand and
business strongest when all the cogs are turning in the same direction. However
it isn’t always one big happy family within Queenstown Inc. The announcement last
week that Queenstown Airport has gained safety approval in principle to extend its
opening hours into the night has most parts within Queenstown Inc. celebrating, but
some other parts not so much.

There is no doubt that the position of Queenstown Airport so close to the hotels and
CBD is a huge positive advantage for Queenstown Inc. There is also no doubt that
noise pollution from the airport is a negative by-product of that advantage. We all live
under the flight path in some way but the residents of Frankton are the most affected
and have had a long running issue with the airport over noise.
They say you do not have a healthy relationship without some disagreements
followed by discussion and compromise. That looks to me like what has transpired
between the Frankton Residents Association and the Queenstown Airport.
Proposed night flights are limited to 10pm at the latest, and the airport is subsidising
noise insulation for some residents directly under the flight path. But all healthy
relationships are built around basic honesty and for some residents of Frankton to
be claiming their argument against night flights into Queenstown is about safety not
noise pollution is in my opinion, not in the best interests of Queenstown Inc. and the
healthy relationship within. If it’s still about noise then say it’s about noise. Honestly.
There is always a degree of risk with aviation, as there is with driving your car, and as
far as I can see, the proposed technological improvements to systems and physical
improvements to the runway will only lessen that risk both day and night. But I am
not an aviation expert. The New Zealand Airline Pilots Association are experts and
they support it. Enough said.

Pavement Epiphanies
This may seem an unworthy rant, as the infraction of the
individual isn’t great. That said, the instances are frequent
and unrequired, and it does upset me and my British
sensibilities...
What I am referring to are the occasions, (which are in
abundance) where a member of the public will suddenly
cease movement on the pavement, simply stopping
deadweight in front of you – breaking your stride.
If such instances were isolated then you may view this as
an over-reaction, but they are frequent. I now find walking
up Shotover Street to be a weaving exercise, where I have
to anticipate the movements of others, performing a slalom
of sorts; good practice come ski season, but somewhat
unnecessary if my current desire is to get swiftly and
efficiently to the shops to buy some eggs.
I’m not asking for a uniform approach to walking; I’m not
asking people to walk in a sort of eugenic parade, each
person mirroring the stride of others, whilst maintaining a
regular distance – No. If that where the case Queenstown
would feel more like Pyongyang
What I would like is that if someone did upset my transitory
endeavours is not to stop, rotate in a feeble, laboured
fashion and look at me as if I came into their house on
Christmas Day and pissed on their kids.
I think the reason this upsets me the most is because of
the British etiquette I employ. This is a situation with an
ingenious solution – before stopping on the street, simply
assess your surroundings, and if you don’t intend to
continue, please, just get the hell out of my way.
You wouldn’t stop your car deadweight on the road,
would you? Apply the same attitude to the pavement.

Events Centre facilities. Alpine
Health & Fitness was closed for 3
days this week. The first time it has
been closed since it was opened
in 2009. You are right in assuming
that these types of operations need
to have scheduled shutdown periods
to allow for essential maintenance
and deep cleaning that effectively
transform the facility into a worksite.
This work would otherwise be
impossible to achieve when we are
open for 99 hours a week all year
round. I can assure you the timing
was also selected in order to minimise

The Helicopter Line is New Zealand’s leading helicopter company, the largest

an outgoing, responsible person to join our busy, friendly Queenstown team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing the highest level of

Coach Driver / Wilderness Guide
We are currently looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Dart
River team as a Coach Driver / Wilderness Guide. The ideal person for this role will have:

• an affinity for the outdoors and a passion to bring it to life for others

• a Class 2 licence and a P endorsement is essential.
In this role you will be responsible for the safe transport of our guests by coach, showing
them the scenic backgrounds for many Middle Earth movie scenes. You will also guide them
amongst ancient beech forest unchanged for 80 million years, talking about the area’s history,
the Greenstone trail and Maori legends, providing our guests with an authentic New Zealand
experience in an untouched world.
You will be based across our two locations, Queenstown and Glenorchy, and daily transport is
provided to our Glenorchy base when required.
We operate seven days a week and applicants must be available to work variable shifts and
