El punto final de la reacción es crítico por que – en adición al uso ineficiente de las materias primas – el uso de un hipoclorito que contenga un elevado exceso de soda cáustica disminuye la velocidad de blanqueo. Al contrario, un producto sobre clorado es altamente inestable y ocasiona normalmente una liberación de cloro. La manera más precisa de monitorear la reacción es por el potencial de óxido-reducción – comúnmente conocido como ORP ó REDOX – El uso del ORP es una forma simple de lograr la mejor eficiencia para obtener un producto con la máxima estabilidad y una perfecta velocidad de blanqueo. El medidor y controlador Powell 2 usa el principio de ORP para monitorear el exceso de soda cáustica en el sistema. Los electrodos de ORP son colocados inmersos en la línea de producción de Hipoclorito produciendo un voltaje inversamente proporcional a la cantidad de exceso de soda cáustica en la solución. Los electrodos mostrarán la misma medida de voltaje si el exceso de soda cáustica es siempre el mismo. Esto permite al fabricante establecer un punto determinado sobre el controlador para obtener un producto estable con el mismo exceso de soda cáustica. El electrodo Powell para potencial de óxido-reducción (ORP) utiliza platino para el electrodo medidor y plata para el electrodo de referencia. Esta unidad ha sido probada en numerosos sistemas como la decloración de salmuera y en las industrias de producción y consumo de hipoclorito de sodio y cloruro férrico. Está recomendado para ser usado con cualquier producto químico halógeno y en absorbedores, tanques de neutralización, chimeneas de escapes y producción por lotes. Esta tecnología de Powell ha sido aplicada exitosamente por muchos años. Muchas plantas en el mundo tales como Chemical Occidental y Olin Chemical en los Estados Unidos , Sasol LTD en África del Sur, Orica en Australia, Carbocloro en Brasil, Occidental en Chile y muchos otros utilizan el electrodo de potencial de óxido-reducción para sus aplicaciones. Dado que el potencial del electrodo es primordialmente una función del ión hidrógeno se observa una inflexión bien definida en el punto final de la reacción similar a la obtenida con las mediciones de pH. La experiencia ha mostrado que una curva típica de milivoltios en un absorbedor de cloro empieza con una concentración de soda cáustica del 21% que reaccionando con el cloro producirá unas señales en milivoltios respecto al remanente de hidróxido de sodio vs. el porcentaje en peso del hipoclorito de sodio. El uso apropiado del electrodo ORP en cualquier absorbedor de cloro diseñado para procesos continuos ó por lotes, controla los altos niveles requeridos de hidróxido de sodio. Los clientes de Powell han controlado exitosamente los niveles normales de hidróxido de sodio tales como del 12% en peso. Muchos clientes prefieren trabajar los absorbedores con niveles inferiores en la concentración del hidróxido tal como 1.5%, controlando el nivel con el electrodo ORP ya sea para producciones de procesos continuos ó de lotes.
