THUNDERWORD July 2016 Volume 5 Issue 7 Saturday July 16, 2016 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Registration and Vehicle Photo Sponsored by The LEHIGH VALLEY THUNDERBIRD CLUB JULY’s GENERAL MEETING will be the Nazareth Day Planning Picnic @ Nazareth Boro Park held on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 3:00pm. The 40th Annual Nazareth Day Car Show planning meeting will be Saturday, July 9th at 3:00 pm. We will be grilling some Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and Sausage. Feel free to bring a side or desert. The club will also have a selection of beverages there too. If you cannot make the show, but are dropping off a gift basket to donate to the basket raffle, this would be the time to do so. At both the June and July General Meetings, we will be passing around a sign-up sheet for volunteers to help with the car show. As usual, we will need people to help with registration, parking, picture-plaque assembly, basket raffle ticket sales, photo runner, water boy (President’s Job), door prize administrator, people to hand out the picture-plaques, people to help guide vehicles out safely and greeters and good-biers (yep, just made that up!). So plenty of things to do, for any one who wants to help out! So, come on out, bring a basket to donate (worth about $25.00), display your Thunderbird and/or another vehicle and join your fellow club members for some fun in the sun! See you all there! Club Officers Vince Luppino President 267-808-1989 Luppinov@verizon.net Tom Hollenbach Vice-President 610-434-2777 trhbach@rcn.com Sally Ingraham Secretary 610-841-9021 Walter Fries Jr. Treasurer 610-759-4997 wfriesjr@aol.com What relatively nice weather we had at Carlisle. Our tent looked fantastic due to the work of Sandi Fries. While I knew many people thought being across from ITC’s tent was going to be awkward, it went well. As a matter of fact, it proved my point that ITC is now Bart’s Thunderbird Club as they “walled off” their tent by hanging up long 60th Anniversary posters (Now you know got them all) along the front and down the side to block off their view of our tent. However, it was nice to see that did not stop ITC members and our members from talking, exchanging ideas and having a good laugh. It is a shame that ITC members care so little to let Bart destroy the club as he is doing. Yeah, yeah, he is growing the club…...really???? Most of the “NEW” clubs joining do not meet the required number of actual ITC members (minimum of 6 ITC members in the club) to actually count as a chapter, so Bart and the ITC Board “granted” a year for the “new Chapters” to get the appropriate head count. So really “New” Chapters ?????? So, on to better things, our Annual Nazareth Day Car Show. Are you registered? What do you mean you are not coming? What???? This is our one event each year that funds our club’s operation and allows us to give a little back to the community we call home! So, I expect to see all our members there. The weather will be beautiful and so far we have a fairly good pre-registration count, so it is looking like we will have about 200 cars for the show. With that number, we will need plenty of help available for registration, directing vehicles to get their picture, parking vehicles, organizing the door prizes, selling 50/50 tickets, selling gift basket tickets and assembling/distributing the picture plaques at the end and finally “Thanking” all those who brought their vehicles out as they leave! So the more members, the merrier the show! See you there! Vince Message from the Board We look forward to seeing everyone at the Nazareth Day Planning Picnic and General Meeting, Saturday July 9th @ 3:00 pm at Nazareth Borough Park and at our Annual Car Show on Saturday, July 16th! Also, if you are planning to come to the ALL THUNDERBIRD CONVENTION, the deadline for the Hotel is approaching, so make your reservations soon. See you at our show! What’s Going on with our Members This year there has been so much effort put into our upcoming ALL THUNDERBIRD CONVENTION, that we missed too many opportunities to improve our communications with you, our members. As President of the Club, I want to apologize for that and will strive to make the necessary improvements as quickly as possible. One idea we have had was to do a “Members Page” to introduce new members, update you on health and safety issues and general well being of all our members. Jerry Engle has volunteered to handle this page, so if you know that one of our members is ill, you want to publish some health tips or let the rest of the club know about a safety issue, please contact Jerry and he will get it in the next newsletter! Shimmy Continued, for those of you in LVTC who have followed my various stories on my T-Bird and through these stories I have blamed Tires, Wheels, Balancing of Wheels and various other little things. Well believe it or not finally got to the bottom of this, if you remember back some time ago Alan Miller and I went to a car show over in New Jersey and the road we took to get there was the roughest road I have ever been on in any car, let alone my T-bird. Well I hit a large pothole, bent the rear Axle housing. Bought a used one brought it home cleaned it up put it back together painted the housing and had it installed. Now starts the saga, which has gone on over the past 9 years like I said in the previous paragraph it was this and that. Over the past few weeks of May 2016 I had everything checked because we knew that we were going to Carlisle. Had the wheels balanced on the lug holes not the center hole. This is how you are to balance Wire wheels. Now the car is ready to go. The beginning of the month made the trip to All Ford Nationals in Carlisle. Car ran great on the way out, coming home different story the same old shake. About a week after we are home Dan Mohry and I took the car for a ride and it was determined that it is the rear differential. So I took the car over to Collis Truck center on Nor-Bath Boulevard and Carl took it for a ride and he concurred the it was the rear differential so after taking the car out , brought it back to the shop put it up on a lift and discovered that there were shims between the yoke and the U-Joint and after running the car on the lift he saw the drive shaft was not running true and also that the Pinion seal was leaking. Now here is where it gets crazy. Got the seal, according to the parts book it is a 3.00 inch OD and a new yoke take it over to Collis to do the work and he said to me sorry wrong seal, I said that’s what the book calls for, he said to me I have been doing drive lines for a long time, that is a 4.128 inch OD seal. So I come home and between myself and my regular Tech we cannot find a 4.128 OD seal for a 1962 T-Bird. I looked everywhere on line finally at Rock Auto I found a 4.13 in seal for a 1957 T-Bird. Don’t ask me how I got the pinion from a 1957 T-Bird in my 1962 T-Bird but it is there. The part is to arrive on Friday the 24th of July and now they cannot put the part in until the 30 th but let’s hope that this might be the end of my woes with the SHIMMY.
