Celebrating Climate Action and Pushing Forward:
Earth Day Network’s 45th Anniversary
The theme of Earth Day 2015
is It’s Our Turn to Lead. This
Earth Day Network campaign
seeks to harness the power of
Earth Day to pressure world
leaders to recognize the massive
challenge that climate change
presents, while uniting people
around the globe in a powerful
call to action.
As April 22 rolls around,
billions of citizens worldwide
will stand up, speak up and
sign up to take action for Earth
Day. Earth Day Network has
released its annual Leadership
Guide to help individuals and
communities plan memorable
Earth Day events. With suggestions from tree planting to eco-fairs, this toolkit provides a cohesive theme
for the thousands of events that will occur for Earth Day. The events will call on leaders to answer step up
and act on climate.
On the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on April 18, 2015, Earth Day Network will present “Global
Citizen 2015 Earth Day,” a large-scale public event that for the first time joins the climate movement with
movement to end extreme poverty. April 22 also kicks off the countdown to 2020 and the 50th anniversary
of Earth Day that marks the date by which cities, local governments, countries and corporations have
committed to achieving significant progress on reducing the impacts of climate change.
Earth Day Network, the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement, works year round to
support civic engagement, and now we are ramped up for action. In just 45 years, Earth Day Network has
accumulated over one billion people in 192 countries to come together to help protect our natural world
and now It’s Our Turn to Lead. Be part of the next billion.
Nob Hill South will be contributing a maple tree for planting in the community in support
of Earth Day. A Maple tree was grown from a seedling and has been cared for by Sal
Messina, a NHS resident over the last four years.

In the event of snow, both Unit Owners &
Residents are required to clear their vehicles of
snow. As you clean your cars, if possible, please
be sure that the snow is not shoveled back into
the street or onto the walkways. Balconies must
be cleared of all snow.
Dog owners are required to walk their dogs
along the dog walk area; the dog walk area is
located along the south side of the parking lot
just in front of the picket fence. Please be sure
to always pick up after your dog. It is unsanitary
and hazardous to your dog as well as your
neighbor’s dog if you do not pick up.
Cleaning the hallway is the resident’s
responsibility. All persons residing in their
respective building must participate. A suggestion
for those resident’s that have a cleaning service
might be to request an extension of maid services
to the outside hallway. Any additional costs – if
there is any - can be shared by all residents.
Re-decorating must be agreed upon and paid
for by all unit owners sharing the hallway.
If you are outside in the courtyard early in the
morning or in the evening, be considerate of
your neighbors (our 1 bedroom units do face
the courtyard). For resident’s making use of the
courtyard for recreation, please be mindful and
tidy up. If you have used the BBQ, please put out
any remaining fire & remove the used charcoal,
empty the grease pan, dispose of cigarette butts
and empty any ashtrays that should then be
moved inside.
Vehicles must park within the painted lines;
parking lot lines help people know where to park
and where not to preventing possible damage
to your vehicle. The designated striped walk
way should also be clear of any vehicles having
parked over the parking lines.

Unit Owners and Residents who do not adhere
to the Parking Rules & Regulations will be towed
at their expense.
Garbage pick up is scheduled on Monday,
Wednesday & Friday. Place all garbage inside
the dumpster & contact our Maintenance
Manager, Mike Ward at 631.585.4429 for large
items you may require assistance. Arrange with
the company delivering the new appliance(s)
to remove the old appliance(s). If this is not
possible, please contact Mike who may be able
to assist.
Our parking lot is for residents only and not for
family members on vacation. And, SLOW DOWN!
There are young children and other residents
who have pets whom you place at risk.
Quiet hours are between the hours of 10 p.m.
and 8 a.m. Be considerate of your neighbors,
and do not run any appliances during this time.
All main entrance doors are to remain closed
at all times due to fire code regulations.
Items are not to be stored in common hallways
that impede a clear entrance and exit to units.
Combustibles are not permitted in any
common areas or in the storage rooms. Any
flammable items will be removed.
All items stored in storage rooms must be
labeled with unit owner’s name and unit
number. Furniture is not permitted to be stored
in common storage rooms.
All outdoor spigots have
been turned off and will
not be turned on until
approximately Memorial Day
2015 pending current weather
conditions at that time.

Here are three tips from the experts at
animal advocacy group Marian's Dream:
Get your cat fixed now
If you have a cat who needs to be spayed
or neutered, don't delay. Waiting until six
months or later can mean they are already
in their cycle and can become pregnant.
More than a million cats are euthanized
each year at shelters because there are
simply more cats than available space.
Many of these deaths would be eliminated
by sterilization before puberty.
(BPT) - The spring season brings warmer weather, longer days, colorful blooms
and many baby animals. In the wild, newborn babies can flourish freely, but for
many animal shelters, the spring is the busiest time of year because donations of
unwanted kittens and cats often outpace available space.
As is known in the industry as the annual kitten tsunami, each spring and early
summer brings an overwhelming number of kittens from unwanted and oftentimes
unintended litters to animal shelters. Reducing the number of unwanted spring
litters means taking action now to sterilize cats before they become pregnant.
"Caring pet providers who do not want to allow the nearly inevitable, unplanned
and unwanted pregnancy to occur must request the fail-safe spay before the
predictable breeding season arrives," says veterinarian W. Marvin Mackie, D.V.M.,
retired. "That means all moms of this past year and young females by 5 months of
age should have their one-time sterilization surgery now."
Why is it important to have females spayed by five months rather than six months
or later? Mackie explains that while mating can occur all year long, peak mating
times correlate with the equinox. Lengthening daylight rules the process!
"When the days start to get longer in January and February, additional sunlight
signals a female cat's pituitary gland to start ovarian activity and she will go into
heat," says Mackie. "Whenever a queen mates, pregnancy is guaranteed, and 61
to 63 days later an average of three to five kittens are born. Then, two months
later the kittens are weaning and the caretaker may decide to keep them or try to
re-home them. If unsuccessful, many are taken to shelters. Shelters call May, June
and July the kitten tsunami season as there are multiple litters arriving each day.
The shelter becomes overwhelmed, as there are not enough homes available."
Learn more
The benefits of early spaying go beyond
reducing shelter populations. An estimated
75,000 cats every year die of mammary
gland cancer and research shows cats
spayed before their first heat cycle have a 91
percent lower risk of developing it. Learn
more at www.mariansdream.org.
Spread the word
Strike up a conversation with your friends
and colleagues, especially those who
have kittens so they too can know about
appropriate times to spay and neuter.
Additionally, ask your veterinarian what
he or she is recommending and have a
discussion about why it's best to "Fix by
Five" months.
"The sheer number of veterinarians who
now sterilize cats younger than six months
report that ease of surgery, safety and rapid
recovery, combine to make spaying at four
or five months a sound practice," says
Mackie. "By performing surgery by five
months and eliminating all of the 'oops'
litters, overbirthing could theoretically be
eliminated in one or two years. What a
triumph that would be for all concerned."

The first wildlife refuge was formed on Pelican Island Florida in 1903.
1969 - Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-WI) proposed the idea for a nationwide teach-in
about the environment.
The world's first national park was started in 1872 at Yellowstone National Park in the
US.
April 22, 1970 - The patron Saint of ecologists is St. Francis and the first proclamation of Earth Day was made by the mayor
of San Francisco in 1970. This is the first Earth Day in the United States with approximately 20 million people participating.
1970 - Congress created the Environmental Protection Agency and passed the Clean Air Act.
Recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to watch a TV for three hours; it's equivalent to half a gallon of gasoline.
1995 - Senator Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role as Earth Day founder and his work on
other environmental issues.
April 22, 2007 - Activists rallied on Capitol Hill for drastic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions - 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.
More than 20,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but
not many people realize it.
Never underestimate the importance of recycling: if every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees
each year. Unfortunately only 27% of all American newspapers are recycled.
Only 11% of the earth's surface is used to grow food.
The first major international conference on environmental issues was held in Sweden in 1972 and was sponsored by the
United Nations.
A highlight of the annual Earth Day ceremony at the United Nations is the ringing of the Peace Bell that was given to the UN
by Japan. It is made from coins given by school children to further peace on our planet.
Happy Earth Day!

3 Ways to Become More Environmentally Friendly in 2015
recycle their Little Bites snack pouches
and earn money for their school.
TerraCycle can recycle the pouches to
create products like tote bags, pencil
cases and even picnic benches.
You can learn more about the campaign
by visiting TerraCycle on Facebook.
Here are three ways your family can
create positive environmental change
starting today.
Water is one of the most important
resources people have, yet every year
billions of gallons are needlessly
wasted. You can conserve water in your
home by teaching your children to take
shorter showers or baths, turning off
dripping faucets and avoiding letting
the water run while they are brushing
their teeth.
You can also reduce water waste in
your home by investing in watersaving appliances and by reducing or
eliminating the practice of watering
your lawn, relying on rain to do so
instead.
Recycle
Research shows that less than 2
percent of waste in the United States
is recycled, yet almost half of all trash
can be recycled. School lunches are
one source of waste that most families
don’t consider. These are packed
each morning and tossed away each
afternoon once lunchtime is finished.
To increase awareness of recycling
options during lunch, Entenmann’s
Little Bites Snacks has partnered with
the recycling and upcycling experts at
TerraCycle for the “Turn Trash to Cash”
program, giving students the chance to
Protect water resources
Help plant a tree
Few things are as beautiful as a tall,
healthy tree. But trees are more than
just a beautiful backdrop, as they are
also essential to the environment. Here
are four reasons why from the Arbor
Day Foundation:
1. Trees help clean the air. They
improve the quality of the air you
breathe by capturing dust and
pollution particles that can affect
your health.
2. Trees help fight climate change. As
trees grow, they remove greenhouse
gases like carbon dioxide from the
air, store carbon, and release pure
oxygen into the atmosphere.
3. Trees planted along waterways can
help filter out chemicals that might
otherwise wash to water sources.
They also can create stable soil and
help prevent soil erosion, flooding
and even landslides.
4. Trees properly planted around
a home can help lower air
conditioning and heating costs by
up to 25 percent.
This year Entenmann’s is partnering
with the Arbor Day Foundation for
the Little Bites’ Earth Day Sweepstakes.
For every entry, fan or not, received
through the Little Bites Facebook
page, Entenmann’s will donate $1 to
the Arbor Day Foundation to plant a
tree - up to 25,000 trees in total. The
sweepstakes starts March 1. You can
learn more at the Little Bites Facebook
page.
Environmentally friendly habits are

great way to bond with your children
on a shared project while developing
lifelong habits. So don’t wait another

Breathe Deeply and Safely:
5 Ways to Protect Yourself From CO Poisoning
homeowners recognize the
importance of protecting their homes
from fire. They do this by checking
the batteries in their smoke alarms,
completely extinguishing fires in their
fireplaces and keeping flammable
materials away from candles or space
heaters. However, while fire safety is
front and center, many homeowners
overlook the ways they can protect
their families from carbon monoxide
(CO) poisoning. And that's a mistake
no homeowner can afford to make.
Census data shows most homes in
the U.S. have either fuel-burning
appliances or an attached garage,
but only approximately half of all
homes have a working CO alarm - the
only safe way to detect this odorless,
colorless and invisible threat. Carbon
monoxide is the leading cause of
accidental poisoning deaths in the
United States; claiming more than
400 lives each year, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention. In addition, more than
20,000 people visit the emergency
room and more than 4,000 are
hospitalized due to accidental CO
poisoning annually.
Thankfully, protection can be as
simple as applying these five tips.
Seek professional help. One of the
most common causes of CO poisoning
is a filthy or inefficient heating system.
Poorly maintained chimneys and
flues can crack, causing ventilation
problems and preventing CO from
escaping up the chimney. Likewise,
a faulty furnace could also emit CO
into the home. Have your chimney or
heating system cleaned and serviced
by trained technicians annually to
eliminate this risk.
14 nob hill south | april 2015
Add or upgrade your carbon
monoxide alarm. Your CO alarms
is just as important as your home's
smoke alarms, so make sure you have
one and that it is working properly.
Kidde Worry-Free carbon monoxide
alarms have the longest life available
in a CO alarm - 10 years - and come
in both battery and hardwired power
options. Each alarm contains a sealedin lithium battery that last a decade
providing homeowners with peace of
mind knowing their alarms are always
on. The Worry-Free Combination
alarm offers warning of both fire
and CO and includes a voice alert to
clearly identify the hazard present. It
also features a unique smart sensing
technology to significantly reduce
nuisance alarms.
Keep the grill and generator
outdoors. Using a grill or generator
due to a power outage? Put on a jacket
and go outside. Never bring the grill
indoors or operate it or a generator in
a space attached to your home such as
a porch, patio or garage. Both can emit
high levels of CO, and need plenty of
ventilation. Even having the garage
door open does not offer enough air
flow to reduce CO levels.
Use your indoor appliances
properly. Only use appliances as they
are designed by the manufacturer. For
instance, never use gas appliances,
like your range or oven, to heat in the
house. This increases your risk of CO
poisoning.
Know the symptoms. CO symptoms
mimic the flu without fever. Since
winter is also peak flu season, know
the difference. If you or a loved one is
feeling confused or dizzy, or if he/she
is suffering from headaches, nausea,
sleepiness, vomiting or weakness, but
has no fever, it may be a case of CO
poisoning. Get the victim outside in
fresh air and dial 911 immediately.
Carbon monoxide poisons thousands
each year, but you can protect yourself
and your family by employing the
tips above. To learn more about how
Kidde alarms can raise your family's
awareness of CO threats, visit www.
KnowAboutCO.com.

History of April Fool’s Day
ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR
HEALTHCARE COSTS?
No one is quite sure how the tradition of April Fools’ Day began. The time around April 1 – just after the Vernal Equinox –
used to mark the start of the New Year. That changed to January 1 with the switch to the Gregorian calendar by France in the
1500s, and some believe that people unaware of the change continued to celebrate on April and were deemed fools, giving
rise to April Fools’ Day. Not everyone buys the calendar theory, though. Others say that the occasion evolved from festivals
of spring renewal when people hid their identities.
•
•
•
•
In France, kids tape paper fish to their friends’ backs. As a result, April 1
in France is known as “Poisson d’Avril,” which translates to “April fish.”
Hindus in India and around the world celebrate the color festival of Holi,
which marks the arrival of spring. Part of the celebration involves playing
jokes on each other and has been linked to April Fools’ Day.
In Scotland, the event lasts two days. April 1 is Hunt-the-Gowk Day
(“gowk” means “cuckoo”), and April 2 is Taily Day. Tricks are played
both days, with the latter focusing on pranks aimed at people’s bums, or
bottoms. This is said to be where the “Kick Me” sign originated.
Ancient Romans celebrated the festival of Hilaria on March 25th with
games and amusements, and some believe April Fools’ Day started there.
Today, Hilaria is known as Roman laughing day.
Notable pranks:
•
•
•
•
Taco Bell announced on April 1, 1996, that it was purchasing the Liberty
Bell to help with the national debt and would rename it the Taco Liberty Bell.
In 1957, the BBC reported about “spaghetti crops” in Switzerland and many requested information on growing their
own spaghetti trees, completely oblivious to the fact that it was an April Fools’ Joke.
Google is a big celebrator of the holiday, and in 2013 it unveiled “Google Nose,” a prank it called “the next scentsasion
in search,” because one could search aromas and sniff them, through his/her computer.
The BBC has had a few other good pranks, including an elaborate video of the newly-discovered flying penguin species
from April 1, 2010, and an interview with a professor claiming to have developed smell-o-vision in 1965. (What is it
with the scent-related pranks?)

(BPT) - Feeling tired of the hustle and
bustle of metropolitan meccas when
on vacation? You’re not alone. Next
year, travelers will choose smaller
destinations and opportunities to
immerse themselves in the local
culture. As daily life is increasingly
hectic, people will want to unplug and
relax without the stressors of a big city.
In 2015, travelers will explore hidden
gems across the country. Bing predicts
that Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg,
both in Tennessee, and Savannah,
Georgia, will be a few of the top travel
destinations in 2015. The slower
lifestyle people associate with the south
may be a draw, as well as the unique
cuisine and beautiful architecture.
Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is best known
as the home to Dollywood, yet offers
so much more. Nestled in the Smoky
Mountains, the mountain resort has
a local population of just over 5,000,
yet offers live music, comedy and
dinner shows. Among larger cities,
Bing predicts that Nashville and New
Orleans will increase in popularity, as
well.
Another top trend in 2015 will be a
growth in services and experiences
that help people live like locals. Many
travelers feel that more intimate lodging
accommodations, restaurants and
music venues provide a more authentic
taste of the destination. Booking
homes, or even just a room, through
companies such as Airbnb or VRBO
has replaced hotels for many travelers.
Millions of guests book on Airbnb for
their travels. Not only is it often more
affordable, but it also lets them cook
meals for themselves and get to know
neighbors like a local resident.
Companies such as EatWith connect
people with other travelers and locals
who share a love for food. For a true

Hummus

Prep: 10 minutes Soak Time: 12 hours Cook
Time: 2 hours
1 cup dried chickpeas,
1/2 cup tahini
picked over
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup lemon juice
(optional)
salt to taste
Directions
Cover the chickpeas in two inches of water, mix in the
baking soda and let sit over night before rinsing well.
Place the chickpeas in a pot, cover with 2 inches water,
bring to a boil, reduce the heat to medium-low and
simmer until the chickpeas are tender enough that you
can crush them between your fingers and that you can
easily pinch off their skins, about 1 1/2 - 2 hours before
draining, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid. Skim off
any scum that may form on the surface of the water after
bringing it to a boil. Puree everything in a food processor
adding as much of the reserved cooking liquid as needed
to get the hummus to the desired consistency.
