It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here: Riding season. With the start of Daytona Bike Week, it feels like the time to get the bike out and start making all of those safety checks (or bolt and screw tightening) depending on what you ride. Let this year be the year that you take that ride you always thought about, but was never able to fit into your schedule. It’s funny because the older I’ve gotten the less time I seem to have to do the things I enjoy the most. I have no idea how that happened. If you’ve never been to Rolling Thunder in Washington DC, maybe it’s time. How about that three-day weekend ride down to the shore you’ve dream about? Yes, it’s a ride down to the shore; not a ride to the beach or the coast or any other name there might be for it. If you’re from this area, you ALWAYS go down the shore. Whatever ride(s) you decide on doing, always remember that there may be someone else who might enjoy that ride too. Our Head Road Captain Marc Weiner is always looking to put together rides that are enjoyable for everyone. If you know of a ride that may fill this bill, contact Marc and let him know. Ride safe and keep the bees out of your helmet! Mac McCloskey Crash Test Dummy After new government legislation was enacted, Mac McCloskey was relegated to coming up with new ingenious ways of getting around on two wheels. The cc limits were downsized, but safety factors were never considered due to the low rpm levels. Safety testing is still under review. How It All Began Hannum’s Harley Davidson In 1954, Tom Hannum, Jr. was so passionate about motorcycles that he was able to convince his father, Tom Sr., to sell his automotive business to purchase a HarleyDavidson® franchise. So began the Hannum's HarleyDavidson® dynasty, which continues to bring the “Thrill of the Ride“ to customers throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. Hannum's Harley-Davidson® has been a family-owned and operated business since it first opened its doors on Chester Pike in Crum Lynne in 1954. As the business expanded, the store was relocated to its current location in Media, PA in 1959; a second location was added in Chadds Ford, PA in 2000; a third location in Sellersville, PA opened at the start of 2015 and a fourth location opened in Rahway, NJ at the start of 2016. Family truly is at the heart of Hannum's HarleyDavidson®. Tom Jr. was an avid racer and motorcycling enthusiast with a great respect for the American iconic brand, Harley-Davidson®. Over the years he passed this passion on to his wife Rita and two children, Tonda and Tom III. All four are actively involved in all aspects of the business today. Along with their talented staff, the Hannum family continues to serve the area with exceptional customer service while maintaining their standing as one of the largest HarleyDavidson® dealerships in the nation. Known for their huge selection, Hannum's has over 500 new Harleys® in stock as well as plenty of pre-owned models to choose from. Hannum's Harley-Davidson® boasts an outstanding sales, service, parts and MotorClothes® team that continues to support the original mission of bringing the “Thrill of the Ride“ to all those who seek it. As Hannum's celebrates over 60 years in business - we welcome you to join us for an unforgettable ride. Four locations - unlimited experiences: Hannum's HarleyDavidson® of Media, Chadds Ford, Sellersville, and Rahway. Page 3 If we can’t all be different, then we’re all the same. Being a biker is a lifestyle no matter how you look at it. Whether you’re riding every day, on sunny days, on rainy days or not at all, you still choose to be a biker. That includes what you drive, where you live, what you do or how you speak. It’s a unique lifestyle unto itself. That’s why this book, “Biker’s Handbook: Becoming Part of the Motorcycle Culture” is such an interesting read. It’s written by Jay Barbieri in 2007. During this time, he was part of the half-hour biker show, “American Thunder” with Michele Smith. He presents an interesting perspective of what a biker is and how a biker functions in all situations. His explanation on Bikeology hits the nail on the head on page 19: “Japanese bikes are more reliable and Harleys break down all the time: Hogwash. That was before 1984. Harleys are as bulletproof as any bike out there and have some of the most advanced technology available to the motorcycle industry Harleys are too expensive: Too bad. Owning an original part of history is priceless. Although it’s become a lot easier to be a biker by simply not shaving for a few days before the weekend and buying a leather jacket, the least you could do is buy an American made motorcycle and be part of the culture that defined freedom on the open road” >>>> 2016 Meeting Venue <<<< We hold our monthly meetings at Maggie O'Neill's Irish Pub & Restaurant located at 1062 Pontiac Rd, Upper Darby, PA 19026 (610) 449-9889 (it's right next to the Chickie & Pete's on Township Line Road). February Bowling Night... February 27, 2016 7:30- 9:30 p.m. at Conchester Lanes 575 Conchester Hwy., Boothwyn, PA 19061 It was a cold February evening and you could see that everyone was up for a friendly game of bowling…or not. It was Hannum’s H-D vs. the Tri-State HOGS and everyone was ready. The TriState HOGS came out strong in the first game beating Hannum’s H-D by a total pin count of 1,459 to 1,337. The swords had been drawn. Hannum’s H-D regrouped and came out in the second game like a house on fire…and then the lights went out in the 3rd frame. Literally. The bowling alley called it Extreme bowling. We didn’t know what to call it. The second game resulted in Hannum’s winning with a total pin count of 1,335 to 1,156. The pizza and soft drinks were a welcome treat to all the folks that participate and those that came to root on their favorite bowlers. A huge thank you goes out to the folks that put this enjoyable night together. AMA Club 1924, named in honor of the AMA’s founding year, is the association’s presence at these events, celebrating the fun of motorcycling, connecting with riders and looking back on the history of motorcycling in America. “The AMA includes people who just love to ride motorcycles, and that love of riding and community is why the AMA was created,” said AMA Chief Operations Officer Jeff Massey. “Our AMA Club 1924 locations are the latest opportunity for the AMA to connect to its members and future members and to showcase the great heritage of motorcycling in America.” Throughout 2016, the AMA will be collaborating with partners to enhance members’ experience at AMA Club 1924 locations. RoadRUNNER magazine, which offers AMA members an exclusive subscription discount on its touring magazine, has created motorcycle travel maps for the rallies on the AMA Club 1924 calendar. The maps, created by RoadRUNNER’s RoadMAPS subsidiary, feature the best roads in the rallies’ state. The maps are large, water-resistant and tear-proof. They include six self-guided routes, each with information on local history, nearby points of interest and lunch stop suggestions. The AMA will distribute the maps for free to visitors of AMA Club 1924 at each rally. The maps also will be for sale in the RoadMAPS online shop following each event. The AMA Club 1924 schedule includes: Daytona Bike Week, Daytona Beach, Fla., March 4-13 Rolling Thunder in Washington, D.C., May 27-30 Americade in Lake George, N.Y., June 7-11 Laconia Motorcycle Week, Laconia, N.H., June 11-19 Thunder in the Valley in Johnstown, Pa., June 23-26 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in Lexington, Ohio, July 8-10 The Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, S.D., Aug. 8-14 Ray Price Bike Fest in Raleigh, N.C., Sept. 23-25 The Florida RoadMAPS to be distributed at the AMA Club 1924 location are sponsored by Ohio’s Windy 9, Bridgestone Motorcycle Tires, Rally Time Trailers, Blue Rim Tours and Americade. Page 7 Remember this Memorial Day Missing Man Table and Honors Ceremony As you entered the room, you may have noticed a special table; it is reserved to honor our missing men. Set for six, the empty chairs represent Americans who were or are missing from each of the services – Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard – and civilians, all with us in spirit. Some here were very young, or not yet born, when the Vietnam War began; however, all Americans should never forget the brave men and women who answered our nation’s call and served the cause of freedom in a special way. Let me explain the meaning of this table, and then join me for a moment of silent prayer. The table is round – to show our everlasting concern. The cloth is white – symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to serve. The single red rose reminds us of the lives of these Americans….and their loved ones and friends who keep the faith, while seeking answers. The yellow ribbon symbolizes our continued uncertainty, hope for their return and determination to account for them. A slice of lemon reminds us of their bitter fate, captured and missing in a foreign land. A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears of our missing and their families – who long for answers after decades of uncertainty. The lighted candle reflects our hope for their return – alive or dead. The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us and those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God. The glass is inverted – to symbolize their inability to share a toast. The chairs are empty – they are missing…………….. (moment of silence) Let us now raise our water glasses in a toast to honor America’s POW/MIAs, to the success of our efforts to account for them, and to the safety of all now serving our nation! Page 8 Hello Fellow Tri-State H.O.G. members! Welcome to spring! And welcome to the unofficial beginning of the 2016 Riding season. The weather is getting better and the bikes for some of you are being brought out of the winter “moth balls”. This is the time of year where many accidents happen due to “rusty” riding skills. When you get on your bike after a prolonged time not riding take it slow. This is true if you have been riding 1 year or 30! You need to re-acquaint yourself with your bike. Three things to keep in mind especially at this time of year: 1. The air in your tires. Do you know that over the space of a month your tires will lose an average of 2 PSI? Over four months of a long winter, that mounts to 8 PSI. That is a huge disparity and can cause real problems if not corrected. 2. Your Helmet – Spring is a great time to double check that there are no cracks or weaknesses in the helmet or problems with the straps. The helmet can save your life, so there can be no more important time spent than doing this. 3. Your bike – Take a minute or two to look at all the screws, bolts and levers on your bike. Oftentimes when we put the bike away we make a note of checking something but then promptly forget about it. Stupid things like: flags, pegs, clutch and brake levers, floor board, pipes, bags: hard and soft, these things tend to loosen up as we ride and often go unnoticed until they fall off or cause safety issues. Checking these things at least once a month is always a good idea. These are always good habits to get in to, but after a long absence of being on the bike more important than ever So we have a ton of great rides coming up. In April alone we have three rides: The Harleysville Hotel ride for the best wings in Montco, the Shady Maple Ride, and the MDA ride for life going up to the Poconos for an overnight event. We all think we are safe on the road. Let me leave you with this sign seen on the side of the road. If you are a motorist what do you think the sign means? What if you are on a motorcycle? Let me know! As always if there is anything I can do to make your riding season experience more enjoyable please let me know. Your Head Road Captain, Marc Wienner 302-540-6359 kitahman@live.com Page 9 My Dilema (Author Unknown) Ladies of Harley …. Louisa Frasier The Ladies of Harley do a great job of working to make the MDA Ride a huge success. Through their hard work and dedication, they raised $250.00 to donate to the MDA Ride. A HUGE congratulations for their success!!! Riding season is upon us! It's time to dust off the bike and get it ready for some interesting rides this year. Coming up June 25 is the LOH ride to Lee's Landing Dock & Bar in Maryland. We'll have a nice easy ride through back roads and a chance to sit and relax next to the water. Ride details are on the Tri-State HOG webpage. Coming up in the fall, we will be partnering up with Hannum's Ride Captain Charlie Dresden for the fall foliage/covered bridge ride. Stay tuned for details. I'm so excited to start another riding season and hope to see everyone on the rides! In total desperation, I tried pouring petrol down the plug holes, fitting new plugs, then old plugs, changing the HT leads, adjusting the points, adjusting, the timing, fitting a new condenser, putting my head in the oven with the gas turned on, but still nothing. After a further ninety-two kicks, two bangs, and two slashed wrists with rusty razor blades---IT STARTED!!! I immediately untied the noose around my neck and discarded the cyanide capsules. The victory was short-lived. With the Red Cross hotline ringing out of my phone and a revolver placed to my forehead, it finally dawned on me: IT CAN’T BE ALL BAD!!! With riding season here, it always seems that the bike takes on a personality all its own. It’s then as you’re pulling the bike out of the garage and you try to start it—it won’t start. Giving Back to the Community… It worked…After Bill’s comments at February’s meeting, he had plenty of food (he’ll accept more) to take to the Loaves and Fishes location. Keep the donations coming. Page 10 European Vacation…Biker Style …. Mac McCloskey I cut my first teeth on a 1986 Harley Davidson Sportster. It was the first year of the blockhead motor being used in the Sportster model. I was stationed at RAF Alconbury, United Kingdom at the time from August 1984 to April 1993. It was during this time that I submerged myself into the biker lifestyle. Here is an excerpt from I journal I kept when I took a trek across Europe in 1992 on a 1990 Springer Softtail: 1 August 1992 It’s 7AM on Saturday morning and I’m sitting in my tent in Eastern Germany. Yesterday was so busy, I didn’t have enough time to make an entry. I covered over 500 miles. I started my way across Europe once the ferry docked. That was about 8:30 AM. Once I was on the road, there was no stopping me. I wanted to just keep going. It was smooth riding until I got into what used to be East Germany. Let me try to explain this. At several points on what’s considered a major highway, two lanes would be forced into one. This caused major back-up problems, but that was just part of it. There were two lanes to use, but no shoulder. So if someone broke down, everyone would just have to sit there and wait or try to filter their way into the other lane. This wasn’t just a problem; it was madness. Traffic was brought to a standstill several times. I couldn’t believe this. There was one thing that really struck me funny. I was in eastern Germany coming up to a town called Jena and I couldn’t believe my eyes. I came up over a hill and there it was: rows and stacks of apartment buildings. It started getting late and I needed a place to camp for the night. This was an adventure in itself because none of the campsites are sign posted off of the main highway. It was a good thing that I had bought a book that listed campsites in Europe; otherwise I’d be in big trouble. I tried to find three different sites before I just about gave up. Finally, it was 10 PM and I was determined to find this last site. After an hour of asking two different people for getting directions, getting lost, riding around in circles, and stopping a cyclist, I finally found the site. One problem, it closed at 10 PM. Continued in the next edition…. Page 11 Please get your MDA packages back to Grace as soon as you can. It looks like a great weekend for a great cause.
