Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid lead a stellar cast in the BAFTA Award-winning drama, Last Tango in Halifax. An instant hit on BBC One back in late 2012, this uplifting comedy/drama about romance and second chances joins the PBS Sunday night line-up beginning September 8 at 7:00 p.m.—leading into the Masterpiece Mystery! court room drama, “Silk.” Full of zesty humor, authentic characters and glorious dialogue, this six-part series is about timeless love in a very modern setting. Welcome to September As everyone is settling in to school, season changes and new routines, WTVP is shaking things up with more incredible programming. PBS’ spotlight on America’s diverse cultures and ancestries begins this month, with the premiere of Genealogy Roadshow and Latino Americans, which will air in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. Arts programming begins on a high note with the premiere episodes of Great Performances “The Hollow Crown” and the first film from the PBS Independent Film Showcase, “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey” from Independent Lens. “Billie Jean King” from American Masters airs in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of tennis’ famous “battle of the sexes,” and the anticipated Masterpiece Mystery! production “Foyle’s War, Series VII” also premieres. Science and nature continue to shine with a rebroadcast of Ken Burns’ celebrated series The National Parks and a breathtaking miniseries, “Earthflight,” from Nature. There’s a lot to love on public television. Childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia, both widowed and in their 70s, fall for each other all over again when they are reunited over the internet after nearly 60 years. As their lives collide for a second time, the couple laments what might have been as they take audiences on a life-affirming journey together. While their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age, it is also a story about family and the complications the relationship causes, especially for their grown daughters. Written by Sally Wainwright and directed by Euros Lynn and Sam Donovan, Last Tango in Halifax stars Derek Jacobi (The King’s Speech, “The Borgias,” My Week With Marilyn) as Alan, Anne Reid (“Upstairs, Downstairs,” “Marchlands”) as Celia, Sarah Lancashire (“Five Daughters,” “Wuthering Heights”) as Caroline, Nicola Walker (“Inside Men,” “Being Human”) as Gillian, Tony Gardner (“Fresh Meat,” “My Parents Are Aliens”) as John, Dean Andrews (“Life On Mars,” “Marchlands”) as Robbie, Nina Sosanya (“Silk,” “Five Days”) as Kate, Ronni Ancona (“Skins,” “Big Impression”) as Judith and Josh Bolt (“Shameless,” Nowhere Boy) as Raff. “Last Tango in Halifax comes to life through its heartfelt storytelling,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “We hope viewers connect with the characters’ ups and downs and experience the timeless nature of love with them. We are so pleased to add this series to the great collection of drama on Sunday nights.” Executive producer Nicole Shindler said, “‘What if ’ is a question that haunts all of us, but in the hands of Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid, and the larger cast of Last Tango in Halifax, it becomes a hugely thoughtful and funny look at love and loss and hope. The themes and stories are completely universal, so we’re hopeful that PBS viewers will enjoy the series as much as those in the UK.” For complete listings information, please visit wtvp.org WTVP 47.1 HD WTVP 47.1 HD WTVP 47.1 HD Get Ready for Changes! Part of Masterpiece Mystery!, the new 90minute films air Sundays, Sept. 15-29 at 8 p.m. Set in post-war 1946-47, Foyle (Kitchen) and his loyal friend Sam (Weeks) find themselves adjusting to a new era of secrets, intelligence, and security as their worlds shift into those of MI5. Offering a unique glimpse into a significant time and place, “Foyle’s War” stars Michael Kitchen as DCS Christopher Foyle, a laconic World War I veteran who serves as detective chief superintendent in the English town of Hastings. As World War II rages, Foyle investigates crimes on the home front, exposing the ravages of war on his once quiet coastal community. After the war, Foyle joins the intelligence community as the Cold War begins. “Foyle’s War” guest stars include Julian Ovenden as Foyle’s son, as well as Robert Hardy, Charles Dance, Rosamund Pike (Jack Reacher), David Tennant (Doctor Who) and James McAvoy (X-Men First Class). It is the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have for the past 500-plus years helped shape what is today the United States and have become, with more than 50 million people, the largest minority group in the U.S. The series is led by Emmy Awardwinning producer Adriana Bosch and documents the evolution of a new “Latino American” identity from the 1500s to the present day, featuring interviews with nearly 100 Latinos from the worlds of politics, business and pop culture — including Herman Badillo, Dolores Huerta, Gloria Estefan and Rita Moreno — as well as deeply personal portraits of lesser-known Latinos who lived through key chapters in American history. 2:30 POV 3:30 Ribbon of Sand 4:00 Washington Week with Gwen Ifill 4:30 Charlie Rose: The Week Sunday—15 3:00 NOVA Ground Zero Supertower 4:00 Illinois Adventure 4:30 At Issue Vintage Aircraft 5:00 PBS Newshour Weekend 5:30Biz Kid$ 6:00 Antiques Roadshow Wichita—Hour 2 7:00 Last Tango in Halifax 8:00 Masterpiece Mystery! In an epic new miniseries, The Hollow Crown, Great Performances assembles four of Shakespeare’s most gripping history plays — Richard II, Henry IV, Parts I & II, and Henry V — into a single chronological narrative. The series premiered to rapturous reviews in the U.K., and was honored with awards both for its upscale production and stunning performances. Premiering Friday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m., this lavish new series of filmed adaptations stars a cast of leading British and Hollywood talent and features some of the most pre-eminent Shakespearean actors of our time. The kings are played by Ben Whishaw, Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston respectively, supported by a phenomenal cast including Rory Kinnear, Patrick Stewart, David Suchet and David Morrissey in Richard II, Simon Russell Beale, Michelle Dockery, Julie Walters and Maxine Peake in Henry IV and John Hurt, Anton Lesser and Paterson Joseph in Henry V. The films continue Fridays at 8 p.m. through Oct. 11. The films — chronicling a bloody tale of family, politics and power — tell the rise and fall of three kings and how their destiny shaped English history. Richard II is a vain, self-indulgent man who rules with little regard for his people’s welfare. He is ultimately overthrown by his cousin Bolingbroke, who ascends the throne as Henry IV. Henry IV’s reign is marred by his own guilt over Richard’s death, civil war, and the gnawing fear that his son Hal is a total wastrel unworthy of the throne. When Hal comes to the throne as Henry V, he is left to bury the ghosts of his father’s past while fighting both the French forces as well as his own inner demons. 10:00 The Red Green Show 10:30BBC World News 11:00 Charlie Rose Overnight 12:30 Charlie Rose: The Week 1:00 Great Performances 4:00 The This Old House Hour Saturday—21 12:00Earthflight, A Nature Special Presentation 1:00 NOVA 6:00 Rick Steves’ Europe 2:00Brains on Trial with Alan Alda Helsinki and Tallinn: 3:00 Latino Americans Baltic Sisters 6:30 Jim Barnett’s Gotta Go! Each individual’s past will link to a larger community history, revealing the rich cultural tapestry of America. Genealogy Roadshow will air Mondays, Sept. 23-Oct. 14 from 8-9 p.m. after Antiques Roadshow. Hosted by Los Angeles-area broadcaster Emmett Miller, Genealogy Roadshow’s premiere season will feature participants from four American cities — Nashville, Austin, Detroit and San Francisco — who want to explore unverified genealogical claims, passed down through family history, that may (or may not) connect them to an event or a historical figure. Experts in genealogy, history and DNA—including nationallyknown genealogical authors, lecturers and researchers Joshua Taylor and Kenyatta Berry—use heirlooms, letters, pictures, historical documents and other clues to hunt down details. They will also enlist the help of local historians to add color and context to the investigations, ensuring every artifact and every name becomes a clue in solving the mystery. Genealogy Roadshow will unearth family and community secrets, reveal notable relatives and discover unexpected stories that connect the past to the present. With a diverse mix of stories in each episode, Genealogy Roadshow appeals to Americans interested in learning about their family histories. It also shows that no matter one’s heritage and background, everyone has a place in history. The idea stated that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. Now the national parks cover 84 million acres…and all of it belongs to you. See this spectacular land, meet the people who fought to preserve it, and discover how, as Americans, we’re not only connected to this land, but connected by it during a special encore of Ken Burns’ The National Parks: America’s Best Idea—a landmark television event that could only be found on PBS. The series airs Monday-Friday, Sept. 2-6 at 8 p.m. each night, and concludes Saturday, Sept. 7 from 8-10:30 p.m. 22 22 Galesburg Yard Sale Board of Directors The Galesburg Area Friends of 47 will hold their annual yard sale on Saturday, October 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 864 Florence Avenue in Galesburg.
