In response to the tragic shootings in Newtown,
Connecticut, PBS will broadcast a series of special
programs the week of February 18-22. These thoughtful
and thought-provoking programs are meant to add
context, depth and nuance to the national conversation
about gun violence in America. The series includes a
Frontline magazine with reports on the battle over gun
control and a psychological profile of the Connecticut
shooter, Adam Lanza, a NOVA documentary on violence
and the brain, two independent documentaries, one on
the history of guns in America and the other examining
how best to secure our schools, a Washington Week
discussion of pending legislation on access to guns (Fri.
2/22 at 7:00 p.m.), a Need to Know episode (Fri. 2/22
at 7:30 p.m.) and a week-long series of timely PBS
NewsHour reports (Mon.-Fri. at 6 p.m.).
Highlights include:
• Guns in America—Tue. 2/19 at 8 p.m.
On the Cover...
For a country still reeling from
the tragic shootings at Sandy
Hook Elementary, PBS and
WTVP offer a week of special
programming that takes an
in-depth and thoughtful look at
the issues the Newtown tragedy
laid bare. “After Newtown” programming, Feb. 18-22, presents
the facts, the science, and the
history behind the issues to
provide information and context
as we collectively look at how
better to protect and serve our
communities.
In April 1775, it took the Minuteman roughly fifteen seconds to load, aim, and
fire each musket at the advancing British Redcoats in Lexington, Massachusetts. In
December 2012, at a primary school in Newtown, Connecticut, Adam Lanza was
able to fire off dozens of rounds with an assault-type weapon in a mere sixty seconds.
Gun technology has evolved a great deal since the Colonial era. So too has America’s
gun culture. In an unprecedented exploration of America’s enduring relationship
with firearms, Guns in America will trace the evolution of guns in our country, their
inextricable link to violence, and the clash of cultures that reflect competing visions of
our national identity.
• Frontline “Raising Adam Lanza”—Tue. 2/19 at 9 p.m.
Adam Lanza left behind a trail of death and destruction, but little else. The mass killer
had no known friends, no diary. He destroyed his computer and any evidence it might
have provided. His motives, and his life, remain largely a mystery.
In partnership with The Hartford Courant, FRONTLINE will
look for answers to the central, and so far elusive, question: “Who
was Adam Lanza?” In a second story, FRONTLINE visits Newtown, Connecticut to explore how those closest to the tragedy are
now wrestling with our nation’s gun culture and laws.
• NOVA “Mind of a Rampage
Killer”—Wed. 2/20 at 8 p.m.
What makes a person walk into a theater
or a church or a classroom full of students
and open fire? What combination
of circumstances compels a human
being to commit the most inhuman of
crimes? Can science in any way help us
understand these horrific events and
provide clues as to how to prevent them
in the future? How much can science
tell us about a brain at risk for violence?
Most importantly, can we recognize
dangerous minds in time—and stop the
next Newtown?
• The Path to Violence—Wed., 2/20
at 9 p.m.
Ever since the wake-up call that was
Columbine, schools and law enforcement
have developed multiple strategies to
prevent attacks. Indeed, the horror of
Newtown needs to be seen in a context
that’s not defined by defeat. Remarkably,
while security hardware and physical
barriers have played a deterrent role in
school violence, it’s been psychologists
working hand in hand with law enforcement officers who have come up with
the most helpful tools to prevent violent
attacks. Can their hard-won gains made
be extended to encompass the parents
and families of some of the nation’s most
violent individuals?
• At Issue-Balancing Guns and
Safety—Thurs. 2/21 at 8:30 p.m.
Continuing the national conversation
on gun laws, mental illness and school
security, H Wayne Wilson hosts a local
discussion on the options available in central Illinois to control gun violence and
to better monitor mental health in the
aftermath of mass shootings in Colorado
and Connecticut.

Books Galore
A short time ago in a galaxy not
at all far away… a community
came together to donate a whopping 4,292 books to benefit the
children of Central Illinois!
The Barnes & Noble Holiday
Book Drive had a banner year
thanks to the generous shoppers
at the Peoria store in the Glen
Hollow Shopping Center. We at
WTVP have been busy getting
those books into the hands of
kids around the community
through events for Taft Homes,
Common Place, Friendship
House and Valeska Hinton.
And we’ll continue these events
throughout the winter, getting
your books into good hands..
Darth Vader may be leader of the
Dark Side, but he knows a good
cause when he sees one. Pictured
here with Stacey Tomczyk (who
is a little short to be a Storm
Trooper), he and fellow members
of the Midwest Garrison—a community-service minded Star Wars
Imperial costuming club—came
out to encourage donations. They
also donated all proceeds from
their gift wrap station to purchase
more books for the Drive. Find
out more about the Garrison at
www.midwestgarrison.com.
Thanks to them, thanks to the
enthusiastic staff at Barnes &
Noble, and thanks to all of you
who bought books for the Drive!
Your donations are helping fuel
local kids’ love of reading.

Notes from the President & CEO
By now some of your more pressing questions about the
goings on at Downton Abbey are being addressed and
new drama is unfolding to keep you glued to WTVP and
to set the stage for Season Four. If you watched the
Season Three premiere on January 6, you were among the
7.9 million people who did so. Maybe we need to start
selling commercials for the big game (can’t legally mention
the name).
Speaking of the Super Bowl and commercials, I read an article that said commercial
spots this year were up to $4 million each. I just had to shake my head to think that the
revenue from just one of those commercials would fund WTVP for more than a year.
What a world.
The ties between Downton Abbey and WTVP continue this fall with a very special
WTVP Travels tour to England. The major part of the tour will feature many of the
sites used as production backgrounds for Masterpiece series: Highclere Castle and

“All That Jazz,” “Mister Cellophane,”
“Wilkommen,” “A Quiet Thing,”
“Maybe This Time” and the incomparable “New York, New York” are some
of the dozens of songs written by
John Kander and Fred Ebb over the
course of their creative collaboration.
They are also some of the great songs
that Broadway stars Marin Mazzie
(Kiss Me Kate, Next to Normal) and
Jason Danieley (Curtains, Next to
Normal) will perform, along with
Chita Rivera and Joel Grey, in a
review conducted by Rob Fisher.
Part of Lincoln Center’s American
Songbook series, Live from Lincoln
Center “Ring Them Bells! Rob
Fischer Celebrates Kander and
Ebb” invites viewers to enjoy a
special concert honoring the legendary songwriting duo of John Kander
and Fred Ebb, the team behind such
classics as Cabaret and Chicago.
Scheduled to record live from The
Allen Room on Feb. 6, the concert
hits the airwaves Friday, Feb. 15 at
8 p.m.
Fisher’s previous three composer
celebrations for American Songbook
– on Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein,
and the Gershwins – were joyous
explorations of the work of those
composers, presented with a firm
understanding of how they fit into
American musical life. Artistic
Director of the Gershwin centenary
(1996-1998), founding music director and conductor of the award-winning Encores! series, Fisher works
extensively on Broadway and in concert halls across the country. Kander
& Ebb’s indelible songs – with all of
their brass, sass and heart – will pulse
under Fisher’s capable hands.

Black History
Month
In celebration of this year’s Black
History Month, PBS will showcase a
lineup of programs profiling the rich
history, culture and contributions of
African Americans.
American Masters “Sister Rosetta
Tharpe: The Godmother of Rock
and Roll” uncovers the life, music
and influence of African-American
gospel singer and guitar virtuoso
Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973).
Southern-born, Chicago-raised and
New York-made, this flamboyant superstar, with her spectacular playing
on the newly electrified guitar, had a
major influence on black musicians,
including Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Etta James, and also on white
stars such as Elvis Presley, Johnny
Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Friday,
Feb. 22 at 8:00 p.m.
Independent Lens “The Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight
for Civil Rights,” follows one of the
most celebrated—and controversial
—leaders of the civil rights era on his
journey from segregated Kentucky
to head of the National Urban
League. Unique among black leaders,
Young took the fight directly to the
powerful white elite, gaining allies in
business and government, including
three presidents. He had the difficult
tasks of calming the fears of white
allies, relieving the doubts of fellow
civil rights leaders and responding
to attacks from the militant Black
Power movement. Sunday, Feb. 24
at 11 p.m.

Makers: Women
Who Make America
The first film to tell the comprehensive story of how women have
transformed America over the last
half-century, Makers: Women Who
Make America shares the stories of
exceptional women whose pioneering
contributions continue to shape the
world in which we live. The film
chronicles the stories of women who
led the fight for equal rights in political power, economic opportunity
and personal autonomy, those who
opposed it, and those — both famous
and unknown — who were caught
in its wake. Narrated by three-time
Academy Award-winning actress
Meryl Streep, Makers premieres
Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 7-10:00 p.m.
The film is built from first-person,
intimate accounts of women who
experienced this time of change,
including movement leaders such as
author and feminist activist Gloria
Steinem and Congresswoman Eleanor
Holmes Norton; opponents such as
conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly;
celebrities including media leader
Oprah Winfrey, journalists Katie
Couric and Barbara Walters, and
comedienne Ellen DeGeneres; political figures such as Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton; and many “ordinary”
women who confronted the dramatic
social upheaval in their own lives.
The broadcast of Makers: Women
Who Make America comes on the
heels of the launch of MAKERS.
com. This landmark multiplatform
video experience from PBS and AOL
aims to become the largest and most
dynamic collection of women’s stories
ever assembled.

An Evening Inspired by Downton Abbey
It was a night of a thousand splendors as fans, young and
old, flocked to the Peoria Civic Center Theater lobby to
celebrate their common passion: Downton Abbey. Guests
were transported back to the elegance of 1912 English
high society as they stepped into a room transformed by
the talents of Gregg Florist and Heaven on Earth, and
filled with beautiful music provided by the Central Illinois
Youth Symphony Honors String Quartet. And they
themselves were part of the transformation in their period
costumes and modern finery.
The Crawley family and their servants—actors from Corn Stock Theatre and Peoria
Players Theatre—mingled throughout the evening, setting the mood and interacting
with guests. Local pianist Roman Paul played the baby grand piano, followed by a
champagne toast and a sneak peek at Season 3. Keeping the night lively, our flappers
ushered in the 1920s by performing a spirited Charleston before pulling willing gentlemen out on the dance floor to the beat of the Peoria Pops Swing Band. Dancing continued for the rest of the evening as everyone shared their favorite moments from past
episodes and compared hopes for the new season of Downton Abbey on Masterpiece.
The evening, a fundraiser for WTVP, was a huge success and we thank everyone
involved. In addition to our guests, participants and dedicated event committee, we
gratefully acknowledge our event sponsors for making the evening possible. Thank you
to Harvest Café for their major sponsorship, and to the following:
