Ropetackle Café
Welcome to our summer programme! Full of amazing music, comedy, theatre,
talks, family events, and much more, all running from May – August 2015. Now an
award-winning venue* we are delighted to offer another exceptional programme of
events with something for everybody to enjoy. Our newly re-opened Ropetackle Café
has been a huge success, and we hope you can enjoy its delectable delights, whether
a coffee during the day, or one of our delicious pre-show meals (see opposite
page for more details). As a charitable trust staffed almost entirely by volunteers,
donations make a significant contribution to covering our running costs and
programme delivery, and our Friends scheme is a great way to support the Centre
alongside other benefits (see page 53 for details). Nothing comes close to the friendly
atmosphere, intimate performance space, and first-class programming that has
established us as one of the South Coast’s most celebrated arts venues. We believe
engagement with the arts is of vital importance to the wellbeing of individuals and
the community, and with such an exciting and eclectic programme ahead of us, we’ll
let the events speak for themselves. See you at the bar!

RICHARD DURRANT
JAZZ BREAKFAST WITH
MIKE HATCHARD
Richard Durrant presents BACH
ON A BIKE (Cycling Music Lap 2 Shoreham To The Isle Of Skye)
The Mike Hatchard/Gordon Webber Ensemble
After last year’s successful 1,500
mile, seven week Cycling Music tour
the UK’s busiest virtuoso guitarist is
back in the saddle.
Between May 1st and July 3rd 2015 Richard will pedal up to 100 miles
between gigs carrying everything on his bike. He’ll perform a wide
selection of virtuoso music highlighting the chameleon like qualities of
the guitar. The show includes JS Bach’s mighty D minor Chaconne and
will also feature Richard’s own Cycling Music for guitar, sequencers, and
pre-recorded bicycle percussion, complete with spectacular projected
animations. The cycling minstrel will also find room in his trailer for his
favourite ukulele on which he’ll perform additional works by JS Bach.
Cycling Music was written for Richard’s successful 2014 album of the
same name. It was played during the BBC’s coverage of last year’s Le Tour
De France, in the film Bicycle (Blue Hippo Productions), on ITV’s Cycle
Show, and on BBC Radio3.
A donation from each show on the tour will be made to the Cycling Defence Fund (CDF).

a bit of pop and music hall, and top it off with lashings of wry humour – and

Sartin (of Bellowhead and Faustus) and
Paul Hutchinson (of Hoover The Dog) have

FLAMENCO BLUES
‘Tormenta Flamenca creates a modern
twist on traditional dancing traditions…
a dramatic show!’ ~ North Norfolk
Times
One artist, two lifelong loves,
Flamenco Blues is a tender tribute
to both blues and flamenco. Like two
strands of one thread, the genres
intertwine with the strength and
tradition of flamenco overlapping the
deep joy and melancholy of jazz while
soulful blues vocals slide in between
explosive flamenco dance.
Asserting their own identities
while melting together seamlessly,
this show creates an entirely new
theatrical experience. This outstanding
performance shows how two powerful
artistic traditions can share the stage
and the same language; sure of
their own identities, they effortlessly
enhance the beauty in the other.
Executed with affection and great
loyalty to each genre, this uplifting
spectacular is brimming with
expertise, skilled showmanship, and
rare artistic vision.

CELTIC FIDDLE FESTIVAL
“Three sensational fiddlers from three distinct Celtic traditions. Exhilarating
fun!” ~ Boston Herald
Described as “three of the finest folk violinists anywhere”, Celtic Fiddle
Festival celebrates the violin in all its globe-trotting variations. Fiddlers
Kevin Burke (Ireland), Christian Lemaître (Brittany, France) and André
Brunet (Quebec, Canada) showcase a fascinating juxtaposition of
international and individual styles.
Sell-out tours and standing ovations give testimony to the electricity and

EDDI READER
In the early 1980s, Eddi travelled
around Europe with circus and
performance artists before moving
to London where she quickly became
a sought after session vocalist.
However, it was the short-lived but
warmly remembered Fairground
Attraction that really brought her
into the limelight with chart topping
album First Of A Million Kisses and
the single ‘Perfect’.
BUDAPEST CAFÉ ORCHESTRA
‘The fiery vivacity and awe-inspiring musicianship of the finest purveyors of
Eastern European gypsy music this side of a Lada scrap heap will leave you
with a grin on your face and rhythm in your feet’ ~ The Times
Led by jazz violin superstar Chris Garrick, the Budapest Café Orchestra
play traditional folk and gypsy music from across the Balkans and Russia,
Klezmer, Romanian Doinas, Hungarian Czadas, and beautiful ballads such
as the theme to Schindler’s List. Evoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle
maestros, Budapest café life and gypsy camp-fires - with a few surprises
along the way - it’s good enough to make you want to book a holiday along
the Danube!
A small but impeccably formed orchestra of just four players, the
Budapest Café Orchestra combines violin, guitar, accordion, double
bass, saz, and balalaika creating an awesome aural alchemy, normally
characteristic of far larger ensembles. Featuring Chris Garrick (violin),
Eddie Hession (accordion), Kelly Cantlon (double bass) and Adrian
Zolotuhin (guitar, saz, balalaika, domra).
Awarded an MBE in 2006 for services to singing, Eddi went on tour all over
the world – everywhere from Kolkata to Australia. Constant touring with
her band has created a magical organic chemistry between Eddi and her
players, and the results play out in their brilliant live show.

imaginative without being too long” ~ The Argus
By the makers of Shoe Baby, Penguin, and Arthur’s
Dream Boat, Long Nose Puppets present the fantastic Flyaway Katie!
Flyaway Katie is an inspiring flight of fancy about the power of imagination
based on the popular children’s book by Polly Dunbar, with music by Tom
Gray of Gomez.
Katie is all alone and feeling grey. The birds in the picture on her wall
look so colourful – if only Katie could be as bright as them, who knows
what might happen? The show is bursting with colour, movement, and
surprises, with puppets of varying scales acting the story.
Aimed at ages 2-7 years. Duration approx. 40 minutes + 15 minutes ‘meet the puppets’.
Funded by Adur District Council’s ‘Grants For Groups’.

“I’m a skeptic. But don’t take my word for it. Or indeed anybody’s.
For anything…” and this is the basic premise of Mitch’s new critically
acclaimed show Don’t Believe A Word. It’s a show that will make you
laugh a lot and think a bit as Mitch debunks myths, exposes nonsense,
and grapples with the very nature of knowledge itself with amusing
consequences and of course a few songs along the way.
The Now Show aside, Mitch has recently co-presented with Harry Shearer
BBC Radio 2’s Anatomy Of A Guitar as well performing Mitch Benn Is The
37th Beatle and presenting Spank The Plank both for BBC Radio 4. An
occasional series where Mitch takes his unique and quirky look at a few
more rock icons has been commissioned by Radio 4 for 2015.

(and off) stage antics, Hendrix’s legacy extends to a wealth of great songs.
Leaving behind the guitar altogether (Hendrix did that rather well…), Benji
tackles his material on bouzouki, banjo and mandolin, and will perform
the songs of Hendrix like you’ve never heard them before.
Benji Kirkpatrick is a musician and songwriter; a founding member of both
folk big band Bellowhead, and acclaimed folk trio Faustus, and has toured
extensively with Maddy Prior and Seth Lakeman.

To celebrate his 35th anniversary as Attila, the globetrotting punk poet/

Launched into public consciousness by legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel,
Attila has spent 35 years performing well over 3000 gigs in 24 countries and
releasing about 20 LPs/CDs, 10 Eps, and 7 books of poetry.
Attila will be reading extracts and introducing a cast of its characters: so far
confirmed are former Albion chairman Dick Knight, Attila’s long time sparring
partner John Otway, and former The Adverts legend TV Smith – there will be

Prog rock, psych, Beatlesque power pop, folk or even the precursors of
Britpop? And that’s not even including their early 80s skinny tie New Wave
stint in the UK and US top 20 as The Korgis. Either way James Warren and
Andy Davis – aka Stackridge – are an unmissable live act, with a pedigree
that stretches to over 40 years of eccentric, perfect, quintessentially
English music.
