We cannot thank the many groups and individuals enough who have provided welcomed advice and support. The legacy entrusted to us was daunting, but with such an encouraging and valuable support base, our goal of SHARP Students, Bright Futures has gained momentum. During the past year, SHARP Literacy has added new and energetic members to its board of directors. The SHARP staff has refocused its energy and explored new possibilities and methods for reaching more students, new donors, and expanded partnerships within the community. We are grateful for all these blessings. We have forged new partnerships and strengthened ties with our valued supporters. Both are crucial to SHARP Literacy’s continued success. The quality program that the Milwaukee Art Museum provides for SHARP students continues to be a high point in their educational experience. Our collaborative efforts with Milwaukee School of Engineering to incorporate STEM principles into the SHARP program resulted in the creation of Bella, the Honey Bee Robot. What a fantastic and enjoyable undertaking this has been! The addition of tours for first graders at Marquette University’s Haggerty Museum of Art has provided a richness to our youngest students’ SHARP experience. The 2012-2013 school year saw a significant increase in the number of participating students. The new year will see an even greater increase in both the number of students and participating schools. We are gratified by the hearty reception the SHARP program receives from administrators, teachers, students, and parents. The students’ futures depend upon programs like ours that offer them hope for a bright future. We are looking forward to the 2013-2014 school year with all of its wonderful possibilities. Our goal is to have SHARP Literacy continue to make a profound difference in the lives of students in the Milwaukee area. To all who have helped support SHARP Literacy with your time, generous donations, advice, ideas and kind words of encouragement, thank you. Your partnership enables us to continue to carry out the important work we do. All of SHARP’s resources are beneficial to the growth and development of our future leaders. It is a great joy to take part in this program. Shelly H., SHARP Educator, BEAM 6 Picture a SHARP Student Submitted by Litza J., Teacher, Blessed Sacrament School Picture a young boy in a second grade classroom who struggles with reading and writing. Picture a young boy who acts out due to his frustrations with learning. Picture a boy who had to repeat second grade in order to strengthen necessary skills. Picture Luis. Picture a program, SHARP Literacy, and you will see what made a difference in the life of this young boy named Luis. SHARP opened doors for him that hadn’t been open before. He still gets frustrated, but has had at least one part of his day where he was confident that he knew how to “read/write” just like everyone else. SHARP let Luis be successful with big words, to make connections that will help him in years to come. SHARP allowed him to be a thinker, a reader, a writer and a success! I appreciate that the SHARP program has aligned our Reading Series with the program. The activities help to build understanding in the reading content area and add to the variety of learning experiences. Thomas, a first grade student from Business and Economics Academy of Milwaukee (BEAM), and his teacher joined Lynda Kohler, SHARP President/CEO for an interview with TMJ4 about the Honey Bee Quilts. Thomas talked about the seasons and his trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum. While at the station, Thomas also received a lesson on weather. Jennifer 0. SHARP Teacher, Trowbridge Success Stories Now picture this same young boy up on his knees so he can see what the presenter is sharing in his classroom. Picture a young boy at the Milwaukee Art Museum participating with ease and using vocabulary words that some might consider over his head. Picture a young boy who couldn’t wait to work with his partner on his end-ofthe-year writing challenge. Picture a young boy who loved the illustrations in the book A Drop Around the World because they helped him read. Picture a young boy who was eager to help research a future book on weather and the Great Lakes. Picture Luis. SHARP School Sponsors SHARP Literacy is able to help students because of the many generous donors who support our efforts. One way to make a significant impact is to sponsor a specific school. SHARP is happy to report that 56% of our schools were sponsored during the 2012-2013 school year. Thank you, school sponsors, for your commitment to Milwaukee’s urban youth. Mary Martha and Emmett J.
