SCHOOL OF BUSINESS YEAR IN REVIEW DEAN’S MESSAGE QSB’s Year in Review is more than just a chance to look back on the highlights of the previous 12 months. Each year since 2007, we have also shared details of financial support for the school, as well as donor vignettes that highlight the power of alumni giving. The 2013-2014 Year in Review includes another strong list of accomplishments to reflect on. You will also see that we have entered the final phase of our fundraising campaign. Thanks to the generosity of QSB’s alumni and friends, the “Invest in QSB” campaign has now reached $51 million of its goal of $65 million. Funds raised are being directed toward four strategic priorities: increasing student diversity in the Commerce program; establishing more scholarships for the full-time MBA program; attracting and retaining the best faculty; and further developing innovative teaching methods. I’m particularly excited about this last initiative, which will enable us to revolutionize a traditional teaching tool: the case study. The Living Case initiative was developed in response to a growing student demand for technology-based learning and classroom discussions that focus on current, real-time events, driven by easy and immediate access to information. Living cases build on the latest market developments, drawing on SEC filings, analyst and news reports, social media and company information, to foster an enhanced understanding of strategic and operational decision-making and integration of activities across entire business systems. The Living Case initiative is just one of the ways we are transforming the traditional classroom into a dynamic learning environment to provide our students with unparalleled opportunities. Your support of the school during this critical final phase of the campaign is vital in helping QSB meet its campaign goals and strengthen its leadership position in the innovative delivery of business education. David M. Saunders, PhD Dean, Queen’s School of Business dsaunders@business.queensu.ca The Living Case initiative is just one of the ways we are transforming the traditional classroom into a dynamic learning environment to provide our students with unparalleled opportunities. Attracts top students from all ten provinces and more than 20 countries. Four-year honours program balances a solid core of business courses with a breadth of arts and sciences electives, international study experiences and leadership development opportunities. qsb.ca/bcom 2013/2014 Milestones Received 5,498 applications to the Commerce program for September 2013 entrance. The Commerce Society raised more than $15,800 for such charities as the Canadian Cancer Society, and bought gifts for 183 local children through its Holiday Hope campaign. Students also contributed their time, volunteering at many Kingston charities throughout the school year. Students raised more than $350,000 through sponsorships and corporate partnerships to run their 10 conferences and four competitions. Two businesses operated by the Commerce Society brought in more than $143,500 in revenues: Creo, a non-profit consulting service that works with local businesses, and Oil Thigh Designs, a campus clothing outlet. 81% of the third year Commerce class participated in an international exchange and 97% of the second year class has applied to go on exchange in 20142015. Queen's Case Competition Union was launched to mentor and prepare students to compete in national and international case competitions. This preparation resulted in strong showings: of the seven competitions entered, Commerce teams placed second in three and within the top four in six. 2013/2014 By the Numbers 1,724 49 51 Commerce students across all four years of the program male:female ratio 14 student-run conferences and case competitions (see complete list at comsoc.queensu.ca) 347 Commerce students studied abroad on international exchange (see map of exchange partner locations on page 24) 3 JOB ACQUISITION STATISTICS — COMMERCE CLASS STATISTICS OF 2013 — JOB ACQUISITION COMMERCE CLASS 2013 Class of 2013 Job Acquisition StatisticsOF — Commerce N STATISTICS — OF 2013 Percentage of students of students who acquired jobs within SITION STATISTICSPercentage — who acquired within 6 months of jobs graduation CLASS OF 2013 6 months of graduation ntage of students 5% 97% 97% cquired jobs within Percentage of students ths of graduation $50,000 $5,000 Median Top Top Finance bonus and other compensation * including $68,614 - Total average salary, including bonus and other compensation Consumer Products Accounting 97% $5,000 Canada $12,000 Bolton, ON Bolton, ON Brampton, ON ry, Brampton, ON Calgary, AB ompensation Calgary, AB Halifax, NS Halifax, NS Kingston, ON Kingston, ON Markham, ON Markham, Base ON Salary Mississauga, ON Mississauga, ON Average Ottawa, $53,200 ON Ottawa, ON Toronto, ON A ON MedianToronto,$50,000 Vancouver, Vancouver, BCBC w York, NY Top $90,000 n Francisco, CA International International Beijing, China Beijing, China Hong Kong, China Hong SigningKong, Bonus China Lahore, Pakistan Lahore, Pakistan $6,032 $5,000 $12,000 By Location Canada Bolton, ON Brampton, ON Calgary, AB Halifax, NS Kingston, ON Markham, ON Mississauga, ON Ottawa, ON Toronto, ON Vancouver, BC 4 USA New York, NY San Francisco, CA International Beijing, China Hong Kong, China Lahore, Pakistan 5% 6% 6% 6% 6% 11% 11% 6% 27%Employmen by Industry Employment by Industry 27% Average Base Salary Average Base Salary $44,406 Employment 20% by Industry $62,859 $44,406 20% $52,443 $62,859 $66,143 $52,443 Employment by Industry $50,500 $66,143 $50,500 $42,688 $42,688 $48,073 $48,073 5% 20% 6% 6% 25% 25% 2 Employment by Industry 11% 6 months of graduation $42,688 USAMarketing & Advertising New York, NY Other New York, NY San Francisco, CA San Francisco, CA * $68,614 - Total average salary, including bonus and other compensation rnational ng, China ag Kong, China ore, Pakistan 20% Base Salary $62,859 $52,443 $44,406 $62,859 ConsultingFinance $66,143 Consumer Products $52,443 Percentage $50,500 Technology of students By Location Consulting $66,143 By Location Marketingwho & Advertising acquired jobs$42,688 within Technology $50,500 Other $48,073 Canada USA $6,032 6% Accounting Finance Accounting Consumer Products Finance 11% Consulting Consumer Products Average Technology Consulting Base Salary Marketing Technology & Advertising Marketing & Advertising Other $44,406 Average Other JOB ACQUISITION STATISTICS — $50,000 $5,000 $90,000 $12,000 Accounting COMMERCE CLASS OF 2013 $90,000 $12,000 * $68,614 - Total average salary, gning Bonus 5% 11% Base Salary Signing Bonus who acquired jobs within Base Salary Signing Bonus Average $53,200 $6,032 6 months of graduation Average $53,200 $6,032 Median 6% 5% 6% $48,073 Average Base Salary Accounting Finance Consumer Products Consulting Technology Marketing & Advertising Other $44,406 $62,859 $52,443 $66,143 $50,500 $42,688 $48,073 20% 2 MBA PROGRAMS 5 MBA Programs Queen’s School of Business offers four distinct MBA programs, each designed to meet the unique requirements of a different segment of the population interested in furthering their careers by obtaining this highly prized degree. The Centre provides partners with access to evidencebased findings and strategies, and collaborative, interdisciplinary research teams with the large data sets necessary for rigorous research. 2013/2014 Milestones The second of a three-part Queen’s Health Policy Change Conference Series brought together leaders in Canadian business, healthcare and government and speakers from seven nations. Its significant output included a series of white papers on approaches to a panCanadian healthcare strategy. The May 2014 conference was a joint effort of the Centre and Queen’s School of Policy Studies and Faculty of Health Sciences. Hosted a workshop on Change Management for Healthcare Policy in January 2014, attended by more than 40 practitioners, policymakers and researchers from across Queen’s, and funded by a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Hosted the Economics and Healthcare Speaker Series, which was funded by a $100,000 grant from the Joseph S. Stauffer Foundation. Principal Daniel Woolf, Monieson Centre Director Scott Carson and David Dodge, then-Queen’s Chancellor and former Governor of the Bank of Canada, at the Centre’s May healthcare conference Hosted a spring conference in Kingston marking the conclusion of a three-year, SSHRC-funded project on economic revitalization that linked 14 researchers from five institutions. qsb.ca/monieson Queen’s Centre for Business Venturing Queen’s Centre for Business Venturing (QCBV) supports the creation, leadership and management of new ventures. Its activities range from embedding new-venture thinking into the curriculum — including an elective course that enables students to invest monies from the TriColour Venture Fund — to providing new ventures with access to capital, and conducting applied research in business venturing. 2013/2014 Milestones Now in its eighth year of operation, the TriColour Venture Fund program attracted 12 students. As of April 2014, ten business plans from companies in Ottawa and Kingston had been considered for investment. The students conducted due diligence reviews on five of the plans and recommended investing in three to the Fund’s Advisory Board. The QCBV-facilitated survey of Best Small and Medium Sized Employers (SME) in Canada celebrated 22 its 10th anniversary. During this ten-year period, the study collected surveys from more than 120,000 employees and nearly 8,000 leaders, gaining insights into Canadian organizations’ key leadership issues. The Top 50 Employers were profiled in PROFIT magazine. Three ’Dare to Dream’ student interns (one MBA and two Commerce recent graduates) received up to $15,000 for each of their new ventures. qsb.ca/qcbv Queen’s School of Business Centre for Responsible Leadership The Centre’s mission is to develop outstanding, socially responsible leaders through education, research, outreach and advocacy. From providing financial support, to speaking at student conferences and in the classroom, to recruiting new graduates and referring prospective students to our programs, alumni share in the school’s successes and aspirations. Staying connected 20 Queen’s Business Club (QBC) alumni events were held in 2013-14 across Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. A seven-event launch tour for Professor Julian Barling’s book The Science of Leadership attracted more than 1,000 attendees. 2013 marked the official return of Queen’s Homecoming, which was held over two weekends in October. QSB hosted a brunch each weekend, with a total of 14 class reunions and more than 380 alumni and friends attending both events. QSB’s outreach to alumni via social media resulted in a 235% increase in followership of @QSB — QSB’s Alumni Relations’ Twitter account (1,617 followers at Twitter.com/QSB). Alumni also connected through other social media channels, including: MAGAZINE linkedin.com/company/queen’s-school-of-business facebook.com/QueensSchoolofBusiness instagram.com/queensbiz qsb.ca/alumni Thank you Alumni Volunteers! The increase is attributable to the successful launch of Queen’s Master of Management Analytics program; the recruiting strength of the Accelerated MBA for Business Graduates; and the introduction of a January start-date for the Full-time MBA program. This latter change, introduced to better synchronize with corporate hiring cycles, resulted in two FT-MBA classes being offered in the 2013/14 fiscal year, one that started in May 2013, the other in January 2014. The Commerce program continued to attract high-achieving candidates, and experienced a higher than usual conversion rate of student applicants accepting their offers to attend Queen’s. I believe that great teachers matter. Now that I’m in a position to pay it forward, I’ve chosen to establish a Fellowship in Marketing to help QSB retain exceptional professors. As a result of this generous financial support, I’ve been able to focus on my studies and participate in career- and life-enhancing extracurricular activities without having to also juggle a part-time job. Austin Lubitz, Comm’17 36 Choosing to attend Queen’s School of Business was the best decision I’ve ever made. Aside from the exceptional academic experience, what truly set QSB apart were the many opportunities to learn and grow outside the classroom — from the school’s international exchange program, to student-led conferences and case competitions, to terrific professional education and networking events, many involving QSB alumni. Each of these provided not only personal and professional learning opportunities, but also strengthened the fabric of the class. I’m grateful to QSB’s faculty and staff, I’m excited for its students, both current and future, and I’m proud to count myself among such an incredible group of alumni. That’s why I give. Classmates came from far and wide to reconnect, reminisce and reflect on how far we’ve come since our wideeyed frosh days. We decided that there could be no better way to mark this milestone than to establish an entrance award to give a deserving student the incalculable benefit of a Commerce education, immersed in the Queen’s tradition. We dedicated the Commerce 1988 Award to the memory of our dear classmates Chris Verney and Margie Philp — a wonderful legacy that they would have embraced. A stock ticker, funded by COMMitment gifts raised by the BCom’10 and ’14 graduating classes, was installed in May, enabling QSB students, faculty, staff and visitors to keep an eye on the stock market. The ticker was the brainchild of the BCom’10 class, whose members contributed in excess of $10,000 under the leadership of classmates Joshua Barr and Mike Melito. experiences at QSB have been lifechanging. Entering the MBA Program (after an academically uninspiring undergraduate experience elsewhere), I was inspired to achieve academic success beyond my wildest dreams by such professors as Bob Crandall, the late Norm Macintosh and Carl Lawrence. Scholarships received in my second year provided financial support that made my first year of married life much easier. Then, after a 25-year career in the high-tech sector, I was invited to return to QSB to teach. This experience has been incredibly fulfilling — the students are awe-inspiring and help keep me feeling young. This donation nearly doubled the assets in QUIC’s portfolio, enabling more students to participate. Founded in 2003, QUIC managed a notional investment portfolio until 2010, when QSB seeded the fund with $500,000 and the Counsel was structured as an unincorporated asset manager. The original portfolio is now valued at $693,000. With the donation from Mackenzie Investments, QUIC will establish a second new equity portfolio, which will focus on world equities. This new portfolio will also enable QUIC to add eight positions to its current membership of 25 undergraduate portfolio managers and analysts. In addition to the financial donation, Mackenzie Investments will also provide mentorship by offering internships and staff expertise as judges and speakers at QUIC events. Visit www.quiconline.com to learn more about QUIC, track the progress of its investments and read its 2013/14 Annual Report. Pictured with Bill are third-year Commerce students (from left) Arun Thiru, Melody Zhang, Landon Bahrey, Rosana Li, Taranjit Randhawa, and Helena Li. I was once told that experiences are the best gifts, because the memories that result endure so much longer than the lustre of new material objects. That’s what I’ve been given— the opportunity to go on an amazing adventure on exchange to the National University of Singapore and build experiences that will create memories that will last a lifetime. I am truly grateful for the generous support of the Deloitte Global Development Award. I hope one day to be in the position to pass along a similar gift.
