SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
YEAR IN
REVIEW
DEAN’S MESSAGE
QSB’s Year in Review is more than just a chance to look back on the
highlights of the previous 12 months. Each year since 2007, we have
also shared details of financial support for the school, as well as
donor vignettes that highlight the power of alumni giving.
The 2013-2014 Year in Review includes another strong list of
accomplishments to reflect on. You will also see that we have
entered the final phase of our fundraising campaign. Thanks to the
generosity of QSB’s alumni and friends, the “Invest in QSB”
campaign has now reached $51 million of its goal of $65 million.
Funds raised are being directed toward four strategic priorities:
increasing student diversity in the Commerce program; establishing
more scholarships for the full-time MBA program; attracting and
retaining the best faculty; and further developing innovative teaching
methods.
I’m particularly excited about this last initiative, which will enable us
to revolutionize a traditional teaching tool: the case study. The Living
Case initiative was developed in response to a growing student
demand for technology-based learning and classroom discussions
that focus on current, real-time events, driven by easy and immediate
access to information. Living cases build on the latest market
developments, drawing on SEC filings, analyst and news reports,
social media and company information, to foster an enhanced
understanding of strategic and operational decision-making and
integration of activities across entire business systems.
The Living Case initiative is just one of the ways we are transforming
the traditional classroom into a dynamic learning environment to
provide our students with unparalleled opportunities. Your support of
the school during this critical final phase of the campaign is vital in
helping QSB meet its campaign goals and strengthen its leadership
position in the innovative delivery of business education.

2013/2014 Milestones
The full-time Queen’s MBA program implemented
a new January start date for the incoming class of
2015. The winter term saw two classes overlapping
until the May graduation of the MBA Class of 2014.
Women comprise 42% of the Class of 2015 — a
record for the program and the result of a focused
recruitment strategy.
The Accelerated MBA, Executive MBA and
Cornell-Queen’s Executive MBA programs each
had a strong recruiting year. The AMBA Class of
2015 is comprised of 15 teams, seven of which are
located in the highly competitive Greater Toronto
Area, and 25% of the students in the Class are
employed by Canadian banks, a new record that may
reflect the value of alumni referrals.
6
The CQ-EMBA is undergoing an extensive program
review focusing on significant improvements to the
curriculum and overall participant experience, to be
implemented for the Class of 2017.
Queen’s Executive MBA has retained its position
as one of Canada’s largest EMBA programs, a
significant achievement in a highly competitive
market.

RESEARCH
2013/2014 Milestones
QSBInsight.ca is the School’s
web platform that features
business research generated
by QSB professors and invited
global thinkers presented in
articles, video interviews, white
papers and webinars. A LinkedIn
study, conducted in the spring
of 2014, ranked QSB in the top
three of the “Most Influential
Brands” in Canada, based on
member engagement with an
organization through page views,
discussions, shared posts and
other interactions. QSB is the only
educational institution that appears
on either the global list or any
of the 16 individual country lists
reported by LinkedIn.

In 2013/14, 53 faculty articles were published in
academic journals; a record 18 of these appeared
in publications cited in the Financial Times list of
45 top-tier journals.
Two conferences brought leading international
researchers to QSB: “Entrepreneurship and
Innovation” and “Moral and Ethical Issues in
Consumer Decision-Making”.

solutions to real-world problems. The Centre
provides partners with access to evidencebased findings and strategies, and collaborative,
interdisciplinary research teams with the large
data sets necessary for rigorous research.
2013/2014 Milestones
The second of a three-part Queen’s Health
Policy Change Conference Series brought
together leaders in Canadian business,
healthcare and government and speakers from
seven nations. Its significant output included a
series of white papers on approaches to a panCanadian healthcare strategy. The May 2014
conference was a joint effort of the Centre and
Queen’s School of Policy Studies and Faculty
of Health Sciences.
Hosted a workshop on Change Management
for Healthcare Policy in January 2014,
attended by more than 40 practitioners,
policymakers and researchers from across
Queen’s, and funded by a grant from the
Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
Hosted the Economics and Healthcare Speaker
Series, which was funded by a $100,000 grant
from the Joseph S. Stauffer Foundation.

Queen’s Centre for Business Venturing
Queen’s Centre for Business Venturing (QCBV) supports the creation, leadership and
management of new ventures. Its activities range from embedding new-venture thinking into
the curriculum — including an elective course that enables students to invest monies from the
TriColour Venture Fund — to providing new ventures with access to capital, and conducting
applied research in business venturing.
2013/2014 Milestones
Now in its eighth year of operation, the TriColour
Venture Fund program attracted 12 students. As
of April 2014, ten business plans from companies
in Ottawa and Kingston had been considered for
investment. The students conducted due diligence
reviews on five of the plans and recommended
investing in three to the Fund’s Advisory Board.
The QCBV-facilitated survey of Best Small and
Medium Sized Employers (SME) in Canada celebrated
22
its 10th anniversary. During this ten-year period, the
study collected surveys from more than 120,000
employees and nearly 8,000 leaders, gaining insights
into Canadian organizations’ key leadership issues. The
Top 50 Employers were profiled in PROFIT magazine.
Three ’Dare to Dream’ student interns (one MBA
and two Commerce recent graduates) received up
to $15,000 for each of their new ventures.

Alumni Connections
Well after graduation, our alumni continue to have an impact on Queen’s
School of Business. From providing financial support, to speaking at student
conferences and in the classroom, to recruiting new graduates and referring
prospective students to our programs, alumni share in the school’s successes
and aspirations.
Staying connected
20 Queen’s Business Club (QBC) alumni events were held in 2013-14 across

FINANCIAL REPORT
Queen's School of Business funds from various sources increased 8% in the 2013-2014 fiscal
year. The increase is attributable to the successful launch of Queen’s Master of Management
Analytics program; the recruiting strength of the Accelerated MBA for Business Graduates; and the
introduction of a January start-date for the Full-time MBA program. This latter change, introduced
to better synchronize with corporate hiring cycles, resulted in two FT-MBA classes being offered in
the 2013/14 fiscal year, one that started in May 2013, the other in January 2014. The Commerce
program continued to attract high-achieving candidates, and experienced a higher than usual
conversion rate of student applicants accepting their offers to attend Queen’s.

$65M Goal
Invest in QSB Campaign Update
Thanks to the generosity of QSB’s
alumni and friends, the “Invest in QSB”
campaign has now surpassed
$51-million (cash and pledges) of its
$65-million goal (as of July 30, 2014).
Funds raised through this campaign will
allow QSB to remain at the forefront of
Canadian business education, and ensure
that students are given unparalleled
opportunities that will guide their
development into successful leaders.
We are grateful for the dedication of our
loyal Campaign Cabinet Volunteers and
Class Giving Coordinators who have not
only given generously of their time, but
also have made personal financial
investments in the future of QSB.
$51M Raised
As we approach the Campaign’s
end in 2016, we are proud of our
accomplishments to date, the highlight
of which was the completion of the
new west wing of Goodes Hall in 2012.
Once we reach our Campaign goal, we
will be able to significantly impact the
lives of our students by increasing
support for scholarships and bursaries,
implementing innovative teaching
methods and retaining our talented
professors through highly sought-after
named positions.

QSB/Queen’s faculty/staff (current and retired)
Before I started my first year in Queen’s Commerce, I’d
never really heard of the field of marketing. Thanks to the
outstanding teaching and passion for marketing demonstrated
by the late Professor Dan Monieson, I was inspired to pursue
a career in this exciting field, one that ended up spanning 31
years with General Mills.
I believe that great teachers matter. Now that I’m in a
position to pay it forward, I’ve chosen to establish a Fellowship
in Marketing to help QSB retain exceptional professors. I hope
this helps inspire the next generation of business leaders to
find its passion through exposure to great teachers.

I’m honoured to be a recipient of the Commerce
1987 Award, which has enabled me to pursue my
passion for entrepreneurship and to realize my
goal of studying Commerce at Queen’s.
As a result of this generous financial
support, I’ve been able to focus on my studies
and participate in career- and life-enhancing
extracurricular activities without having to also
juggle a part-time job.
Austin Lubitz, Comm’17

Choosing to attend Queen’s School of Business was
the best decision I’ve ever made. Aside from the
exceptional academic experience, what truly set QSB
apart were the many opportunities to learn and grow
outside the classroom — from the school’s international
exchange program, to student-led conferences and case
competitions, to terrific professional education and
networking events, many involving QSB alumni. Each
of these provided not only personal and professional
learning opportunities, but also strengthened the fabric
of the class. I’m grateful to QSB’s faculty and staff, I’m excited for
its students, both current and future, and I’m proud to
count myself among such an incredible group of alumni.
That’s why I give.

The BCom’88 25th anniversary class reunion
in October 2013 sparked countless memories
of our time at Queen’s. Classmates came from
far and wide to reconnect, reminisce and
reflect on how far we’ve come since our wideeyed frosh days.
We decided that there could be no better
way to mark this milestone than to establish
an entrance award to give a deserving student
the incalculable benefit of a Commerce
education, immersed in the Queen’s tradition.
We dedicated the Commerce 1988 Award
to the memory of our dear classmates Chris
Verney and Margie Philp — a wonderful
legacy that they would have embraced.

BCom’10 & ’14 class gifts fund stock ticker
in BMO Atrium
The ups and downs of the financial markets are
now being tracked from the comfort of the BMO
Atrium at Goodes Hall. A stock ticker, funded
by COMMitment gifts raised by the BCom’10
and ’14 graduating classes, was installed in May,
enabling QSB students, faculty, staff and visitors
to keep an eye on the stock market.
The ticker was the brainchild of the
BCom’10 class, whose members contributed
in excess of $10,000 under the leadership
of classmates Joshua Barr and Mike Melito.
The Commerce Class of 2014, led by Jordan
Vandenberg and Amy Amodeo, contributed
nearly $3,000 to the cause.

Commerce students pledge $1.2M to Goodes Hall expansion
Commerce students have been showing their support for the Goodes Hall expansion by agreeing to pay an
optional annual fee of $97.50 that will generate $1.2 million over ten years. This initiative was spearheaded by
the Commerce’08s and continues to draw wide support.
Thanks to the following 797 Commerce students, from first to fourth year, who contributed more than
$77,700 to the new wing in 2013/2014.

My experiences at QSB have been lifechanging. Entering the MBA Program
(after an academically uninspiring
undergraduate experience elsewhere),
I was inspired to achieve academic
success beyond my wildest dreams
by such professors as Bob Crandall,
the late Norm Macintosh and Carl
Lawrence. Scholarships received in my
second year provided financial support
that made my first year of married life
much easier.
Then, after a 25-year career in the
high-tech sector, I was invited to return
to QSB to teach. This experience has
been incredibly fulfilling — the students
are awe-inspiring and help keep me
feeling young.
My support for QSB, both financial
and through teaching, enables me to
give back to the best business school in
Canada, if not the world.

Class Gifts
Homecoming 2013 gift presentations
John Purkis presents the Commerce
1948 class gift to Dean David Saunders
on behalf of his classmates. Continuing
a long-standing class tradition, the
BCom’48 gift will fund awards for
students entering the first year of the
Commerce program.
John Langhorne (left) and Ian Friendly
present the BCom’83 class gift, which
was directed toward the BCom’83
Faculty Fellowship. This year, the
fellowship was awarded to Professor
Laurence Ashworth to support his
research on consumer psychology.
The class gift in honour of the BCom’88’s
25th anniversary reunion also commemorated
the memory of two classmates, Margie Philp
and Christopher Verney. Special guests at the
Homecoming Brunch were Margie’s mother,
Catherine Philp (third from left), and brother

A gift from an anonymous donor has made possible the introduction
of the Living Case method to enhance the learning experience of our
students. The Living Case approach integrates timely, real-world
information into an electronic format that is extremely flexible and
can be enhanced and updated as situations evolve in real time. This September, we are excited to bring a series of living
cases and real-time analytical-based exercises to our students. It’s a transformative and unique teaching approach that brings
relevant content into the classroom and ensures that QSB
remains at the forefront of innovative teaching.

Mackenzie Investments’ $500,000 gift boosts
student-run portfolio at QSB
The Queen’s University Investment Counsel (QUIC),
a student-run investment portfolio at QSB, in March
received a gift of $500,000, along with mentorship
support, from Mackenzie Investments, one of Canada’s
leading investment firms. This donation nearly doubled
the assets in QUIC’s portfolio, enabling more students to
participate.
Founded in 2003, QUIC managed a notional investment
portfolio until 2010, when QSB seeded the fund with $500,000
and the Counsel was structured as an unincorporated asset
manager. The original portfolio is now valued at $693,000.
With the donation from Mackenzie Investments, QUIC
will establish a second new equity portfolio, which will
focus on world equities. This new portfolio will also enable
QUIC to add eight positions to its current membership of 25
undergraduate portfolio managers and analysts. In addition
to the financial donation, Mackenzie Investments will also
provide mentorship by offering internships and staff expertise
as judges and speakers at QUIC events.
Visit www.quiconline.com to learn more about QUIC,
track the progress of its investments and read its 2013/14
Annual Report.

Corporate and Foundation Annual Giving (continued)
Bill Stamatis, BCom’95, Deloitte Partner (at centre), celebrates
with award recipients at a reception in Toronto in May. Deloitte LLP
and employees have committed $400,000 to the Deloitte Global
Development Award. Pictured with Bill are third-year Commerce
students (from left) Arun Thiru, Melody Zhang, Landon Bahrey,
Rosana Li, Taranjit Randhawa, and Helena Li.
I was once told that
experiences are the best gifts,
because the memories that
result endure so much longer
than the lustre of new material
objects. That’s what I’ve been
given— the opportunity to
go on an amazing adventure
on exchange to the National
University of Singapore and
build experiences that will
create memories that will last
a lifetime. I am truly grateful
for the generous support of the
Deloitte Global Development
Award. I hope one day to be
in the position to pass along a
similar gift.
