About 50-60% percent have been to a live concert but most get their music from 'other' sources. 60% of British pupil but it whereas hardly any Spanish pupils are willing to pay for their tracks, but prefer the radio or free internet downloads. The shop-bought CD seems to be on its way out. popular among British pupils but less so in Poland or Slovenia. When it comes to how we hear our music, the clear winner is the computer. The iPod or MP3 player is extremely Again, only 1 teenager in 10 still listens to music on a CD player. (To be continued at page 3) Music at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe EUROVISION SONG CONTEST We wish Poland and Slovenia all the best in the semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow on Saturday, 16th of May, 2009. Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom have already qualified for the final. RGS has had a long and distinguished tradition of musicmaking and a number of RGS musicians have had successful careers in music. The music department includes two studios, the ‘Queens Hall’, a large school hall and a Technology Room, enabling pupils to use new technologies and record their own music. The school also hosts seasonal concerts, where many young musicians from the school perform. The music department also performs during the annual school production and the sixth form leaver’s production. The school has produced two famous pop musicians and many other talented composers and musicians over time. The music scene in Slovenia Vlado Kreslin– famous Slovenian musican. Music means a lot to us all and so there are numerous musical events at our school throughout the year. There are concerts of our school band, various performances of rock, pop and classical music, we also have a choir. The most important event that includes music is undoubtedly Primafest. Primafest is an event that is yearly organised by First Gymnasium Maribor. It offers many interesting festivities such as concerts, drama plays, artistic performances, lectures and so on. Dijaška skupnost (Pupils community), who organises this event, contacts and invites many famous people within their field of expertise for example last year they invited a very famous Slovenian musician Vlado Kreslin and they also gave an opportunity to the school band. Every year Primafest attracts many pupils, not just from Prva Str. 3 What is hip-hop? Hip Hop is an art form that includes DJing, emceeing/ rapping, breakdancing and grafitti art. These art forms as we know them today originated in the South Bronx section of New York City around the mid 1970s. Hip Hop has thrived within the subculture of Black and Puerto Rican communities in New York and is now just recently beginning to enjoy widespread exposure. From a that helped curtail gang violence due to the fact that many adults found it preferrable to channel their anger and aggressions into these into these art forms which eventually became the ultimate expression of one's self. sociological perspective, Hip Hop has been one of the main contributing factors Ja- kub Wu- darczyk. FEEL– POLISH FAVOURITE BAND ‘Feel’ is the Polish POP group founded in Katowice, Poland in May 2005. Its first name was Q2, then it renamed to the Q3, later Kupicha Band and finally Feel. In 2007, the group received the Amber Nightingale and Public Nightingale Awards on Sopot Festival 2007. The leader of the group is Piotr Kupicha. The band consists of 4 persons: Piotr Kupicha - vocal, guitar, Łukasz Kożuch – keyboard, Michał Nowak – bass gitar, Michał This band is very popular not only in Poland, but also all the world. Their songs are listened to by children, youth, adults, and even the elderly. People are crazy about them. They mad on their concerts. They buy CDs with their songs and hang posters on the walls. Youth queue for hours to get their autograph. Opaliński –drums. Piotr Kupicha Music – our way of spending free time ! Continued from page 2 So what are we listening to? Pop and Rock are the most popular with Dance a clear third. Dance is not at all popular in Germany and Classical music is not widely listened to anywhere. Can we play an i n s t r u m e n t ourselves? Yes, is the answer in Spain with 9 pupils out of ten claiming to be able to play something - in Poland by contrast only 1 in 5 plays and instrument. Does this explain why the Spanish are so enthusiastic about music l e s s o n s i n school? 90% love them whereas in Slovenia 65% would rather not be in the music lesson at all. Marcs Band! German school band If we are looking for a reason why the Spanish love their music so much, maybe we can look at the results for parents: about 90% of Spanish parents like their music whereas in Slovenia only every fifth parent has the same enthusiasm. This has been a fascinating look at attitudes to music MP3 PLAYERS MP3 players are very popular among teenagers in Poland. The most popular makes of MP3 players are Creative and Sony, because they are cheap and the sound quality is good. These MP3 players are suitable for us because we are able to afford them based on our pocket money. Teenagers usually use their MP3 players on the way to and from school. They are the most popular ways of listening to music. Bartek Wilk Slovenian anthem written by France Prešeren: Live, oh live all nations, Who long and work for that bright day, When o'er earth's habitations, No war, no strife shall hold its sway; Who long to see, That all men free, No more shall foes, but neighbours be. a translation by Slovenian students WE UNITE WITH VICTIMS OF WARS ON THE DAY OF PEACE To celebrate The Day of Peace Spanish students and teachers will write a message and paint their hands on a big white sheet on the wall. All of us should do something special on the Day of Peace. Have a moment of reflexion while reading the song text: We all want to unite with many innocent people suffering because of the cruel war in Gaza and many other victims of wars all over the world. We are singing the song ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon. Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today Imagine there's no countries, It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace RADIO STATIONS IN MARIBOR, SLOVENIA: ‘Imagine’ is an utopian-themed song, which appeared on Lennon's album in 1971. It is recognised as one of the greatest songs of all time. You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope some day you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Canary Students’s points of view about Music Most of our Canary students like Reggeaton Music: Don Omar, from Caribe or Puerto Rico.
