Writing for the News Factory Kids is a great
experience for us! It is a huge responsibility, but
a great honour.To succeed... you need to find something to hold on to,
something to motivate you, something to inspire you.
The students of The News Factory Kids volunteered to
be young editors and worked hard with high motivation…
The first issue of The News Factory Kids brought pride
and success. All students received a certificate for
their big effort, hard work and success.

We would like to congratulate our friends Ecem Varma, Alperen Doruk Işık and Damla
Begüm Sucuka on their great projects. We were very proud of our friends when we read
their projects on Mary Glasgow Magazines website. Let‟s read their creative projects
together!
Football is a very popular sport all around the world. Every
person knows at least a little bit about it. We usually watch the
professional matches, but there are different matches, too.
I don‟t like football and I think I can‟t play it very well.
However,
when
I
watched
deaflympics
(international
deaf,amputee, paralympics football matches), I realized that I
can play this game. Do you ask yourself „‟How can disabled people play football?‟‟ I can tell you about
them. In deaflympics, deaf football players make matches. In these matches, the referee waves a
flag,he doesn‟t use a whistle. In another kind of football, “Amputee Football”, the players usually
have two hands, but they have only one foot. They play with their crutches. The goalkeeper usually
has two legs but he has only one arm. In Paralympics, visually impaired and blind footballers play
football. They use a special ball. It makes a strong sound. There are only four players and a
goalkeeper in each team. The goalkeeper can see a little. In these matches, the goals are great.

I‟m very forgetful. Sometimes this results in interesting or
funny things. One day I was at school. We had a P.E.
lesson. Normally we don‟t go to the sports field, but it was
a sunny day and my P.E. teacher took us to the field. We
did exercise there. My mummy came to school and when I
got in the car I realized that I had forgotten my coat on
the field. I went to the field again but there was no coat.
When I returned to school, someone stopped his car and
asked “Is this your coat?” I was shocked that it was really
mine. I was very happy that my forgetfulness didn‟t cost
me anything.

When I was a little girl, my dad said “We are going to
Paris!” I felt very nervous because I didn‟t know where
Paris was. We packed our bags to go to the airport. There
were a lot of people and planes. We bought our tickets and
“Well ,It‟s time to go.” said my dad. We walked to a long
corridor and a stewardess said “116th plane is waiting for
you.” She was working for the airlines. We took our seats
and waited to reach to the clouds. The plane speeded on
the runway and took off. I was scared a lot and I hugged
my mother. Then I read a book. A flight attendant came
next to us and said “Do you want to eat fish or meat?
Would you like to drink orange juice, lemonade or tea?”. But I just said “Mummy! What did she
ask?”. My mum told me “My darling, what do you want to eat? Meat or fish!”, I just want to eat
meat please!”,OK, then what do you want to drink first. Tell it to the steward”, said my mum.
I said “I just want to drink some orange juice,please!!!” with a quiet voice. Then I read my book
again and ate my meal. It was so great. My family and I slept for a long time. When we woke up,
the sun was shining and we were in Paris !!!

ESKĠġEHĠR
My name is Alperen. I‟m eleven years old. I go to
METU Primary School. I love travelling to other
countries and cities. After the first term of the
school, we had a holiday for fifteen days.
I wanted to visit Eskisehir by high-speed train.
On the 29th February, we went to the train
station in the morning. We met my father‟s
friends there. Then, we got on the train. It was
special for me because it was my first time on a
train. I got on the train. It started to move.
First, its speed was 102 and then 145,190,230.
Its highest speed was 255 but we didn‟t feel the speed. At last, we arrived at Eskisehir. Firstly,
we visited Odunpazarı. There were many old houses but they were restored. The only glass
museum of Turkey is in Odunpazarı. Eskisehir is famous for its meerschaum so I bought a
meerschaum pipe. We were very hungry so we decided to eat pies which were famous in Eskisehir.
I thought they were delicious. We drank hot tea near Porsuk River, but the weather was very
cold. It was snowy in the morning. Eskisehir is a fantastic city.

Hello, my name is Başak. I am from Turkey and I am 11 years
old. I live in Turkey, in Ankara. I love this city. In this city,
there is a lake called Eymir and I went to this lake. It is very
beautiful! I like it very much! In my photo, you can see the lake
and me! You should go to Eymir Lake. It is very amazing. My
family and I (my mom, my dad and my brother) went to Eymir
Lake to eat lunch. We had our lunch, we played volleyball near the
lake. When I first saw the lake, I was 8 years old and I was

What tips can you give to the students to improve their English?
I think they should revise what they’ve learnt every day, do their homework regularly.

really enjoyable and I was good at it.

What tips can you give to the students to improve
their English?
They should watch films, read books, participate well
in class, practise and never give up trying.

I love animals and I’ve got two turtles. I love them.
Their names are Bonbon and Tonton . I feed them every
morning and evening.
I clean their aquarium every fifteen days. My mother
brought colorful stones from the beach last summer
for them. I think I
look after my turtles
very well. When I
come near the aquarium, they’re always very excited
because they want some food. Bonbon and Tonton
don’t eat food by themselves. They only eat when my
parents and I feed them by hand. In the evenings they
watch TV with us. It’s not easy to look after a pet,
but it is great fun!

I love my cat Sufle. He is cross-eyed. He is scared of
everything that is moving fast and everyone who he
doesn’t know. In the mornings he climbs into my
mums’ bed. I also go to her bed and we stroke him.
And then, the alarm rings and he runs away.
I love my dog Balım
too. One day she
came to our backyard
and we gave her some
food. One week later we went to the vet with Balım for
her health problems. The vet told us she had a high
temperature. He took an X-ray. He told us she had a cyst
so Balım had an operation. One week later she was well.
Now she stays in our entrance corridor. My cat and dog
have a funny relationship. Sometimes we open the door
of the corridor. The cat sees the dog. The cat looks at the dog with strange eyes.
The dog looks at the cat. He makes a “grrrr” sound and the cat runs away. I love my pets!

This is my pet dog, Ateş. She is a Kangal
dog and she is six and a half years old.
She was just two months old when she
came to our house. She plays with me
and runs after me. She eats everything
except fish and chicken bones. She lives
in a hut. Her hut is red. She likes to
chickens. I love her a lot.
play and run. She sometimes swims in the Look!!! She doesn‟t hurt the
pool, in our garden. She never hurts the chickens…
I also have five chickens. There were
ten
chickens in the garden last week, but now there are nine chickens because one of the chickens died.
They live in a coop. They lay a maximum of twenty eggs in two weeks. They eat worms and chicken
bait. They love running and eating. I‟m lucky to have them!

My name is Ada and I have a cat named „Sakız‟. She has white fur and
hazel eyes. She is so cute and she is only one year old. She lives in our
house and she loves to be with us.
Sakız can do many things. She likes to climb. She always climbs chairs
and curtains. Sakız is not a really fast eater but when it comes to milk,
she drinks it in a second. Sakız likes to sleep and play with me.
I love spending time with Sakız,too. She usually comes to me and meows
at me. Then she sits on my legs and starts to sleep. She also sits next
to me when I watch TV and we watch TV together. Anyway, it doesn‟t
matter how she behaves, I always love her.

Hi! My name is Janset. I have got a very cute and beautiful white Persian
cat. His name is Puki and he is two years old. I like his fur. It is as soft
as down. I like playing with Puki. We usually play ball together. One day
my aunts Nurcan and Canan were in our house. Puki loves Aunt Nurcan a
lot. He always lies on her feet. We were in the kitchen and Puki was lying
on my aunt‟s feet. Suddenly,my aunt Nurcan spilled a glass of hot tea over
Puki by mistake. Puki immediately ran to his room and he didn‟t come out
of the room for two hours. Puki is one of my best friends and I love him!

After twenty hours on a plane, we arrived in Orlando. Then we went
to a hotel in Kissimmee, in Florida. The hotel was very close to the
amusement parks. First, we decided to walk around the hotel.
When we got up the next day, we
went to Epcot (a park in Disneyworld).
There were many things from the past
and the future. I got many autographs
of the main Disney characters like
Minnie and Mickey.
The next day we went to the Islands of Adventure in Universal
Studios. I think it was the best park because it was thrilling and we
tried our first rollercoaster in The
Land of Harry Potter.
On the third day we visited Animal
Kingdom, another great park in Disney. There
were real animals. We saw bats (but they eat
fruits), tigers and at the safari there were
elephants, lions and many wild animals. The
next day we took the photos of the stars at
the Hollywood Boulevard.
The next morning my mom and I went to Hollywood Studios. There was a great
movie ride. We took a ride on Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz. Then we went
to the haunted hotel. It was very scary. We also watched the musical Beauty
and The Beast on stage.
On the last day we went to the Magic Kingdom. It is the biggest and the best
park in Disneyland. We went into Peter Pan, Snow White and Winnie The Pooh.
Actually, I got autographs of many story characters like; Rapunzel and the
Disney Fairies. It was also a lot of fun in the evening. There was a firework show around the castle.
There were also many parades at night-time. It was a perfect holiday!

When I was a little girl I visited Paris, the capital city of France.
My parents and I went to Paris by train. We met my father‟s
friends. We visited the Louvre Museum. There were lots of
paintings including Mona Lisa, the most famous painting
of Leoanardo DaVinci. We visited the Eiffel Tower. It was
amazing. I went on a merry -go- round ride with my parents.
We stayed in Paris for three days. Then we went to Brussels.
I still remember that wonderful journey.

In April 2008, I visited France for a day. I could see all the famous
places, except Disneyland. At that time, we were in Geneva for a
week and we got on a fast train from Geneva very early in the morning and we arrived in Paris at about ten. The weather was very rainy
and cold, so we took tickets for the
buses called
“Hop on, Hop off”.
First, we visited Notre-Damme
Church for thirty minutes. Then we
went to Champs-Élysées. It is the
most famous street of Paris, and we
ate a sandwich there. Next, we
visited
the
Eiffel
Tower.
We couldn‟t go up, because it was

very crowded. We walked near the
Seine River for an hour. Our time was up, and we almost missed
the train because of the traffic jam. However, we caught the train

at the last moment.
This trip was very short, but Paris was amazing. I want to go there once more to see Disneyland.

I went to Rome, Italy with my parents by plane last
summer. We stayed at a hotel near the train station.
We bought a Roma Pass to travel by train,bus, etc. in the
city.
You can visit many historical places in Rome such as;
the Colosseum. Imagine that there were many gladiators
there a millennium ago. I also went to the Vatican. It is
the center of Christianity. The Pope lives there. In the
Basilica of Saint Pietro you can climb about 600 stairs.
You can feel like a king when you are on the Spanish
Steps. I also tossed some coins at Trevi Fountain but my
wish didn‟t come true.
I saw BLUE ICE near Piazza Campo De‟ Fiori. I bought chocolate, strawberry, lemon and vanilla ice
cream. I went to Piazza di Nuova. I ate salmon, pasta and tiramisu. I drank tomato juice and
coke. (The tomato juice was terrible.) My parents and I also went to Piazza del Popolo. We tried
to find a place to eat for a long time. Finally, we found a famous restaurant and I ate a delicious
pizza. We went to Piazza da Nuova again and an artist drew my portrait.
I spent an excellent time in Rome and I advise you to go there. I believe you will also have
an incredible time there.

I had my summer holiday in Boston with my family. It was a great
holiday. We went there by plane. We stayed in Boston for a month.
Boston is in the state of Massachusetts. Actually, I have many things to
tell you about the journey. Our flight was good but there were some
problems. We flew to America with a connecting flight; Ankara to Munich,
Munich to Boston. My mother went to Boston before us so I flew with my
father.
When we came to Munich we knew that we
were going to wait for six hours, but our
flight was delayed and we waited for nine
hours! The journey was long. I didn't get
bored because I watched films and listened to music. Then I fell asleep. When we
came to Boston, it was evening. My mother met us at the airport and we went to
her apartment in Longwood Medical Area, next to Harvard Medical School. She was
sharing her apartment with a friend, a doctor from Şanlıurfa. He was a very good
cook and he cooked delicious foods for us.
There were many interesting places in Boston. We went to the Government Centre,
Harvard University and we visited Harvard Museum of Natural History (I bought a

Freshman Harvard T-shirt there). We went to The Boston Old Navy Museum,
Museum of Fine Arts, New England Aquarium, Lechmere, Fenway Park, the Harbour, Newport, Cohasset (suburb
of Boston) Cheesecake Factory (a famous restaurant in Boston) and Downtown. We also visited New York for
a couple of days.
We went to a “Build-A-Bear Shop” too. It was very enjoyable to make a bear. We shopped a lot there! I took
many photos. I also tried bacon. It had a lot of fat in it. We didn‟t have a car so we walked and used the
subway. I memorized all the stations and all the lines, such as red line, green line and orange line.
It was a very enjoyable holiday. I had fun and I learned a lot about American culture.

HELLO! My name is Bartu. My dream was to go to Paris and I went to Paris last
summer. I went to Disneyland. Disneyland is a big magical place, I think. There are
five interesting roller coasters; Indiana Jones, Crush Coaster, Space Mountain,
Thunder Mountain and the Rock and Roll Coaster. These
roller coasters are very fast and very scary. My favourite
roller coaster is Crush Coaster. Crush is a sea turtle. In
this coaster you sit on a turtle and travel under the sea.
You see the fish, sharks, jelly fish and NEMO. Disneyland
Tower is very beautiful and colorful. This tower is
Sleeping Beauty‟s tower. I like Disneyland Tower. My
favourite Disney movie is Toy Story. I met Woody, Jessie
and Buzz Lightyear and I have got photographs with
Woody and Buzz. Can you believe it?
In Paris there are a lot of museums. You can see the
Mona Lisa at the Louvre. You can eat snails and duck. The Eiffel Tower is very high.
I think Paris is very beautiful. Go and see!

talented students who are very successful in different areas. We asked them the secret of
their success. Here are their answers …...
I love playing tennis. I began to play tennis when I was in
kindergarten. It was a great honour for me to win the first place
in the tournament. I think the secret is practice.

I became interested in tennis when I was
in the first grade. It is great to be a
champion!
Ada BAZLAMACI 4-A
I really enjoy skating. I started skating
when I was eight. I felt very happy when
I won the medal. Being talented and
working hard is the secret of my success.
Burcu OKYAY 4-E
Tennis is my favourite sport. I‟m very good at it because I
practise every day.
Tuana TINAZTEPE 3-D
I like doing sports and tennis is the best sport for me. My
parents,my teachers and my friends were proud of me when I
won a medal in the tournament. Patience is the secret of my

Drama
is
the
use

imagination, the power of
creative
self-expression
and undrestanding of self
and the world. It is also
self-confidence
and respect for others.
Students of English Drama Club experienced all of these throughout the year. They
had a very successful performance on stage on Wednesday, June 1st at the
auditorium. They were very happy, proud and shining as stars.

SONER ABACI
Soner Abacı is from Ankara. He was born in 1975 and
graduated from Public Relations. He is working for Turkish
Underwater
Sports
Federation.
He‟s
a
journalist,
film director, a scuba diver and an instructor.
He is rewarded for his two photos and eight documentaries in
the national and international festivals. He visited METU
Primary School to talk about sea
pollution and sea life. We watched one of his documentaries
„Turuncu Eller‟. In the documentary he and his friends found
TVs, bottles, cell phones, shoes and a fridge under the sea.
Soner Abacı says that a plastic bottle decays in the sea for
almost 450 years. He gave us a lot of information on sea and
sealife.We‟d like to thank Soner Abacı for his visit.

Dear mother,
I think you‟re a great mother. You are so wonderful and beautiful. I like
you so much because you always take care of me. You also taught me
how to tie my shoes! I‟m so lucky that you are my mother. You are

Bossaball is a Spanish ball
game between two teams.
It's a mix of volleyball,
football,and gymnastics.
The aim of bossaball is to
ground the ball on the opponent's field. Players can touch
the ball only once with their hands, or double touch it with their feet or head.
When a team grounds the ball on the inflatables, it gains one point.
Scoring on the trampolines is three points. Hitting the bossawall (= the rings around
the trampolines) doesn't count as a score. Bossaball referees have a whistle,
a microphone, various percussion instruments and a dj set. You can play this game in
lots of places. For example; hotels, amusement parks, sports clubs, beach clubs,
music festivals, fairs, summer camps, camping grounds, ski resorts, shopping
centers, water parks, schools,....
Bossaball is a new sport. It's a competitive sport and also a fun game. In my
opinion bassaball is an enjoyable sport. I love team sports and ball games so I want
to play bossaball this summer.

CHESS BOXING
This is a very exciting sport. Chess Boxing is a mix
of sport and game. It sounds that it is not possible,
but it exists. I read some resources on the internet
and learned about Chess Boxing.
There are eleven rounds in a contest. Six rounds of
chess, five rounds of boxing. A round of chess takes
four minutes. The game starts with four minutes of
chess. Then there is three minutes of boxing. There
are breaks between rounds. Players can win by a
knock out.They wear headsets to reduce noise.
I think it is a fantastic sport because you can play chess when you do this sport.
You should try it!
